Dehuman Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 There are lots of events that didn't receive much press, but made the life of a USN Tomcat pilot quite interesting - even in "Peacetime". -Nick Understandable for fighter pilots to behave like that. All the thrill of combat without having the unpleasant side of killing people / being killed. Whenever I hear Americans or Brits complaining that they were "aggressively" and "unprofessionally" intercepted by Russian or Chinese fighters I smile. Aggressive, doubt it, having a good time, definitely.
Robert31178 Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 I like the pics of F-14 guys holding up nudey mags for Bear crews to peep. Looks like all were just being friendly while testing the waters / intel gathering. There's a book called "The Scream Of Eagles" by Robert Wilcox that gets all into the weeds on Top Gun and the guys who stood it up. The book is really about the steps the USN took to get the Phantom to finish Vietnam out with an 11:1 kill ratio, but they do discuss flying the TA-4 quite a bit and why it was such a good aircraft to train against. I got really into it when I was trying to be a hot dog in Strike fighters fly Rhinos and it remains one of my favs. If you want to get into Top Gun and how it was in the early 70's in the USN pick it up. Sorry, this was not a plug for the book intentionally, it was just to point out that there is some good reading about the A-4 as an adversary and I got sidetracked lol..... ~S

BlackLion213 Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 real fans watch final countdown Why is that? -Nick
Dino Might Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 real fans watch final countdown And real lovers watch both...weekly...
Alicatt Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Why is that? -Nick Do you have Zero interest in the Final Countdown? :smilewink: Sons of Dogs, Come Eat Flesh Clan Cameron
drPhibes Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Why is that? -Nick Because, with the exception of a few nice flying scenes (f14 vs. a4 over the desert etc), TG isn't really worth watching. I'm not saying that the Final Countdown is the best movie in the world, but it's far from as bad as Top Gun.
1stBEAST Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 (edited) only thing that bothers me everytime i watch final countdown is, how intact the Zero is after it was hit bei 20mm rounds. but it is a fun movie, with the good old Carrier Air Wing A-6, A-7, RF-8, F14, etc there are so many good scence in the movie. also the whole process of info gathering and so on at the start of the "incursion" was good portrayed Edited April 25, 2017 by 1stBEAST
Robert31178 Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Yeah beast lol, specifically in light of just how not tough a Zeke was compared to anything else the 20mm might be used on.
lunaticfringe Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Real fans watch Speed and Angels, and get mad at the interspersed F/A-18 cockpit footage.
probad Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 aw no fair speed and angels was a docu might as well bring out the penninsulaseniors presentation if you're gonna raise the bar that high
lunaticfringe Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Nah, if I'm gonna raise a bar, I'll just let Snort kill two Adversary F-5s alone during Fighter Derby.
captain_dalan Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Real fans watch Speed and Angels, and get mad at the interspersed F/A-18 cockpit footage. I was about to say "you nailed it!", but then this came: aw no fair speed and angels was a docu might as well bring out the peninsula seniors presentation if you're gonna raise the bar that high Hell yeah! As for TFC VS TG.....both have some good footage of our favorite bird, but TFC has shots more indicative of its flying characteristics and more (to me) appealing liveries. I'm a big fan of the old high visibility schemes (VF-1, VF-143 and FV-84 especially). TG has more aerial shots though and higher quality camera work. So.....i like them both i guess, TFC just a wee bit more because of the above mentioned. What i like about TG (and what i find quite surprising) is that for an 80s movie, it's unusually "clean". bC3660 Posted April 26, 2017 Author Posted April 26, 2017 My DAD was in the Final Count Down working the flight deck with the A-6 squadron. I was in the opening of Top Gun final checking the A-7 on cat 2.

bC3660 Posted April 29, 2017 Author Posted April 29, 2017 Can I get "The NAVY" on the side of my F-14?
Kirk66 Posted April 29, 2017 Posted April 29, 2017 TFC and Hot Shots totally blow away TG. From my experience in the fighter business (including some engagements against F-14s; won some, lost some...), the ONLY realistic scene in the movie is the "You lost that loving feeling" bar scene. Except real fighter pilots/WSOs/RIOs would be wearing sweaty flight suits and helmet hair... Vulture
