Good review. Its not perfect but the positives seem to far outweigh the negatives. My only concern from this review is the VR sickness after 5 minutes. Its probably nothing your body won't get used to. Heck it took me a week before I could use the Rift for any length of time.

Seems to me he demoed the unit that Pimax delivered to him... not sure he can be faulted for that.

His review appeared very fair to me. He highlighted the strong points and spoke about some weak ones.

He certainly did not trash the unit in any way.

I agree Pimax approached him not the other way around and said it as it is at the time with out rose tinted glasses.

A little bit superficial review by Linus what is comon to people who doing reviews of almost everything like Tested guys without focusing on some important details or without fully understand it.

But if you compare it with others reviews even Tested one have some in common conclusions. It is worth it and this is definitely next gen VR no matter what someone want to say. Even 5K model have significantly reduced SDE compared to CV1. SDE on 5K is closer to the Pimax4K than to the CV1.

Reason is in display PPI and magnification factor of the lens. Because twice larger display per eye nad only 1/3 larger FOV per eye. Because of this diferences 5K have better PPD than Pimax4K, 17 vs 12.8 or 17 vs 10.8 compared with CV1. Same reason is for smaller SDE. PPI is some sort of physical resolution of display so CV1 got 470, 5K got 530 and 4K/8K got 807 PPI. benefit here is magnification of the lens and because 5K and 8K got only 2/3 magnification of CV1/Pimax4K this display greed is less magnified what make it less noticeable.

It may well have been a fair assessment of prototype 2. If he wasn't being fair (not my word) to anyone, it was himself for posting so little so late in relation to being a Youtube reviewer/tester of some popularity.

I think it was more about getting some skin in the game as this heats up.

Its posted well after the KS ended. I dont get it! I think the fact he says dont bother with current gen VR, even at a discounted price, is quite telling.

He said he thought he was feeling nausea because of the "distorted image". Is that the stretching of the image to fill 200 FOV?

My guess would be the lower performance he was probably getting in the game that it bothered him most in. He also stated it was not so bad in that other game that Pimax had already tested with their unit, which was probably less demanding on the hardware.

Undoubtedly there will be some performance optimizations yet to come as well.

Another thing I was curious about was the comfort wearing the headset, I mean that thing looks huge on the head. He stressed also it was quite comfortable to wear.

I think it's the same prototype as SweViver youtube review.

Nope. SweViver was in Amsterdam (prototype 3)

The best indication of current (prototype 3) performance is what Sebastion Ang says while trying PCars. It is far and away the most demanding title tried so far and we know it was running on some kind of 1080 laptop.

There is another strap and foam faceplate. They list current modules here:

Your are not. I am in error. For some reason I thought Amsterdam had shown prototype 3. The information is on a build up and things are flowing so quickly it's hard to keep it all straight. My bad.

What neither of these prototypes have is eye tracking. The potential performance of the headset is not the same as the actual, as many here have found out.

I only stepped in when i knew this stretch goal was gtg. Alone this is a huge step forward to getting a steady 82-90 fps.

No matter who is doing review all of tham are importhant and give you some perspective.

Point is we have to take them all in consideration and than learn to read between the lines.

Major point are proven true all of this reviews. So all facts telling us this is truly next gen VR. Even 5K model is huge step forward. Comparing some specs with first review of Samsung Oddysey and impresion tells us that even 5K model is better then 1st gen VR.

First impresion about WMR tell us about less noticeable SDE even on brand new Samsung Odyssey is the best and valie we use for PPD and SDE to compare it in numbers are going in favor to 5K vs Odyssey, not much but noticeable. For example Odyssey PPD is 16 and 5K is 17. SDE factor is for Odyssey 183 and for 5K is 235. To remind you for SDE factor higher is better same as for PPD.

So conclusion from 5K if we focus only on PPD and SDE without taking in consideration FOV even 5K should be significant step forward even compared with latest gen 1 VR like Odyssey.

Pimax said already in the campaign that accessories will be available later and that you will be able to choose if you want the whole package together or if you prefer to have the HMD first.

I`ve chosen the HMD seperately even if I don`t have the base stations ( I ordered one), so I can use it at least with reduced tracking abilities.

Most likely the Headset will be delayed anyways and everything will be shipped together. ;)

How many base stations does the Pimax support - one or two? I still got two from my Vive which I rarely use since the Rift is better supported by DCS. But the Vive base stations and controllers will work with the Pimax, right?

I'm also running under that careful/conservative assumption, even though I did not order any additional hardware ;)

Pimax supports 2 base stations (The package I ordered comes with 2).

My understanding is that yes, Vive base stations are supported.

They have given the option to receive the Headset separate from the hand controllers and base stations. Delivery of February if you just want the headset, April if you want it has a bundle.

One base station will be sufficient for seated usage like in sims. For room scaling you will need two (or maybe more). Later there will be a modul for inside-out tracking, so you won`t need any base stations any more.

And yes, Vive base stations and Controllers will work with Pimax.

OK,Thank You,I must have missed this important info while jumping on The 8k bandwagon :thumbup:9 [not first time I missed small print] I've ordered a Vive basestation on Newegg,I'll then have two when my Pimax order ships :D

Thanks ram. This is what I was hoping for.

I always liked the Vive's approach (room scale) and tracking better than the Rift's. But for DCS the Rift was just better in performance, which was the only reason for me to get it on top of the Vive, which I bought before.

Hopefully, I can now at least reuse parts of the Vive's Hardware and get an even better experience compared to the Rift :)
