1.5.8 and 2.2.0 to 2.5 transition Discussion

If you have enough disk space, keep 2.1 for the time being.

What are you even talking about? They released the OpenBeta one day earlier than announced.

Did ED ever promise to get the stable release version ready by the end of January? To the best of my knowledge, that was never the plan, and they kept their promise perfectly well.

Absolutely they did. I don't want to quote again the promise as it was beaten to death here. I can put you the same question: was it clear that it will be the open beta and not the release? Obviously not. You splitting hairs here trying to appease someone who clearly does not need your support. I have also stated that I don't care whether they did broke they promise. I work in the same software engineering field and I know it is very hard to keep promises about deadlines.

So, on a more practical thing. Do you have any answer for my question?

Will 2.5 Open Beta update to 2.5 Full Release when it's available? Or will we need to uninstall the Beta?

If I understand correctly the figure, 2.5.0 Open Beta and 2.5.0 Release are two different branches. That means you have to install Release if you want to play it along Open Beta. When 2.5.0 Release installer will be published I believe this will be a new install. All I hope is that during the install, Release branch will take the bulk of files from the already installed Open Beta version (should you have one installed).

In short, I BELIEVE the answer to your question is "no" but you can keep the Open Beta along Release.

Yes, this is all correct, but it is also possible to convert your Open Beta installation to Stable Release by using the DCS updater with the following command: DCS_Updater update @release once 2.5 Stable Release has been released. If you would do that know you would convert to 1.5.8 Stable Release ;)

You can see the current version for each branch here: https://updates.digitalcombatsimulator.com/

Most refreshing news in a while. Sir, you are the hero of the day.

On a related note, maybe the drawing in the begining of the thread should be updated with this tiny bit of info.

All the infos on how to use the DCS updater are located here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=114030

I use it to jump back and forth between Open Beta and Stable Release branch for quite some years now. You can use it to repair your installation, to switch between branches or switch back to any specific version that has ever been released.

They always said that this is how long they think it will take, but that it will depent on the actual state of 2.5, how stable and bug free it is.

Can be two months, don't care now. I am downloading OB as we speak and when Stable will come out I will just update. :pilotfly:

Perhaps I will do same after two weeks elapses and stable version is not ready. I have dcs 2.2.0 installed and have been itching to delve into 2.5 seeing YouTube video post. It has been hard holding on

I'm afraid I'll be doing that as well. Or you know what? NO, I'll just do something else and wait until proper 2.5 is released.

Frankly speaking, I've had it with all these alpha/betas or whatever the hell they like to call their test-environment. They need to learn a thing or two from the Sturmovik guys, about how you relase updates.

So yeah, on pure principle - I'm not doing a damn thing until proper 2.5 is released.

I am sure it won't be until the memory leak is fixed in the OB. Once you see that fixed in OB then, perhaps, a week or too later would be my guess for the release version.

Totally agree! Plenty to do elswhere until the release version emerges!

I hope the plan is not to delay release, so more folks become beta testers?

I’m having my SSD installed, today, with Win10 on it. Which I’m told is a good way to go. In downloading DCS 2.5, is there a place where I can specify I want it on the SSD? Also, will the download automatically go to 1.5.8 and 2.2 on my C drive for information?

Thanks

It will install to a default location on your C drive...however if you want another location on C drive you can change that when the installer prompts you. Best to keep it in the default location as it is the standard location.

HOWEVER if you can afford it buy a fast SSD which is dedicated to DCS only that way game will run faster as read/write operations to this drive will only be for the game and not Windows as well. More bandwidth...

Go for a SSD at least 256gb or bigger if possible....Samsungs SSDs are great. DCS will grow in size over time with more add ons.

2.5 installer will copy data from previous installations; but as you are installing a new C drive with W10

it will be less problematic to do a clean install of DCS 2.5. A new install of W10 will not have registry entries from previous operating system install. A clean install is more work, bigger download but will be less problems.

Save your current DCS.openalpha folder at: C:\Users\Gary\Saved Games\DCS.openalpha as it will contain bindings etc for joystick keyboard etc...you may want to use this later after install so no need to set up from scratch again.

Could you define a “clean install” for me? Where should I save the openalpha folder? On the SSD?

I'll just point out that I'm not ED, I'm just another user.

But...

If you'd rather not install the open beta for any reason, don't! ED make the beta builds available primarily so that people who want advance access to new DCS World or module builds can have it. Like any testing, the more testing happens the better, but ED have plenty of people available to do more than adequate closed beta testing without making open beta builds available to the user base at large.

So no, there is no conspiracy to coerce more people into beta testing. Nor do they mind people waiting to install 2.5 until the stable build is available. Do what you feel comfortable with, and no more.

VinnieJones a clean install as in not updating from a current version you have of DCS World but installing from the beginning as if there is no previous version. Like you did the very first time you installed DCS World.

Save the current open alpha anywhere you want to, as it has data that may be useful in future such as bindings/inputs for aircraft that you may manually copy over to the clean install of 2.5.

If you go the way of a separate SSD just for DCS do not copy open alpha to that dedicated SSD. Let it be dedicated just to 2.5 open beta or 2.5 Final when that is released.

I am assuming you are installing a new SSD for Windows 10 install and may install 2.5 to it or a dedicated separate SSD...Gary

After waiting 2 weeks for the release version, I have decided to go for the 2.5 OB. Its unknown how long it will take for the release version. Cant wait any longer.

I have 1.5 Stable and 2.2 open Alpha installed. I plan to uninstall 1.5 version. Download the 2.5 OB installer. Hopefully, It will download the 2.5 Caucass and copy all other stuff from 2.2 Alpha. After that I will uninstall the 2.2 Alpha so that I have one version only.

Once release version is out, I plan to uninstall the 2.5 OB and Download everything from sctracth to have a fresh installation.

Any reviews or suggestions on the above process ?

Seems fine

Personally I would prefer to just update one of the existing installations though. ;)
