AIM-7M's are mounted to Mid/Inner Pylons via LAU-115C, and Intake stations via LAU-116

Can be mounted or are actually mounted? I'm just surprised they're still in use, especially on new aircraft.

Whether or not it's a popular loadout, I doubt it.

if active jamming is going on, then the growlers are either going to carry AIM-9X's or HARMs

Can APG-79 guide sparrow? I’ve seen them mounted somewhat recently but can they actually guide it? I know the block I can.

I dont see the point honestly, AIM-120C7s and AIM-9Xs should be pretty much all they need.

AIM-7M/Ps were the last ones, there are no more, they were pushed from active duty for more AIM-120Cs, so once they are gone, they are gone.
AIM-7Ps have the receiver upgrade, but whether or not they are still loaded on Block II/III Hornets remains a mystery, it's in the HOL SCS, but it's prolly just left over, and not in our inventory anymore.

On one hand, I'm surprised too.

On the other hand, those missiles have to take wear and tear from the catapult launches, practice dogfights, and carrier landings, right?

Maybe they kept flying them in areas where they thought weren't likely to need to actually use them in order to save wear and tear on newer AIM-120s?

But then again, that photo of AIM-9X and AIM-7 together, why not an old 9M...I could be wrong entirely.

Also...I'm not opposed to the 18E/F/G series, I think we need them eventually so it's not really even a question for me, but I'd rather see some more cold war classics first even if they came in as AI only.  A-6, A-7, EA-6B, F-4B,C,D,F,G,J,N,S (probably not all of them), F-111/EF-111, so Cold War scenarios don't have so many modern aircraft or substitutes.

What's a AN 4?......... we can also use RF-8s, their last cruise was June of 82..... VFP-63 on the Connie..... my third and last cruise on her.

My Dad, God rest his soul, was stationed at Pensacola at the beginning of the Cuban crisis and got out shortly after as an E4 Petty Officer 3rd Class.

AN is the Naval rate for “Airman.”

My bad on the 4 as I was thinking of E4.

Dad was an Airman 3rd class.

On another note, the Connie was one of last few flat tops that ran on steam boilers.

I work on boilers and I can only image how massive and loud those are.

Also, two of my kids did their 4 years of service, John was an IT Specialist 2nd class and was stationed in Norfolk.

Beth was an Operation Specialist 3rd class ( Surface Radar ) aboard the DDG 103 Truxtun. My Uncle Don, Lt. Cmdr called destroyers “Tin Cans” as he served on them for about 20 years. He was hardly ever home as he loved the sea.

Uncle Joe was an Electrician’s Mate aboard the submarine USS Piper during WWII. He showed me his Dolphin pin.

Anyhow, thanks for the inquiry as it brings back fond memories.

I retired as a Aviation Electronics technician, First Class, or Avionics tech, I worked on the DECM out of the old A-7Es, A-6Es, then the F/A-18C/Ds. I did three WESTPACS as ships company on the Connie, 78-82, two with VA-94 (A-7s) out of NAS Lemoore, on the Enterprise, 85-88, and two more as ships company on the Lincoln, 93-97, where I retired out of Everett, WA. and came back here to Lemoore where the wife and kids were.

Fair Winds and Following Seas to your Dad.
