Strange behavior when switching NWS into high gain. Sometimes the nose wheel randomly locks up in a straight position, and will not turn. I release the button, and it still shows NWS Hi, but have no control over steering. I'll tap the button, hoping to get it to go out of high gain, but no luck. I've hit the paddle, to disable NWS altogether, but it seems its stuck in high gain. Eventually NWS will go out, and i can re enable it and things work. No rhyme or reason as to what causes it to happen though. Had the issue on the beach and on the ship.

Don't know if its a bug, or i'm doing something wrong. Anybody else have issues with this?

Same to me! did I made a mistake? or a bug?

And, what is the button function proposed to? Press HI release Normal ? or Press&Release HI Press&release Normal?

Not sure if it has anything to do with your situation but if Launch bar is down only NWS will work when it's held down and NWS HI doesn't work at all.

Launch bar up NWS activates by key press and NWS HI on holding button as normal.

Please include a track file so we can see what is going on, thanks.

I will learn how to record a track file,

Thank you for your reply!

Appreciate!

Track file included.

Here's a track. I was able to get the nose wheel to lock up in High gain a few times. Had the control indicator on, to show I was moving the pedals, without result. I was unable to reproduce the paddle switch not disengaging NWS though. I don't have any issues till I taxi to the parking area and start turning the jet.

I know what you said above. What happened to me is out of the situation. Launch bar is up.

It happened occationaly. Few minutes before, it happened just after I touch down on Carrier and raise the hook.

At afternoon, it happen on land taxing and runway.

Included. Wish I would have saved a track when I had the major issues. This one just shows the nose wheel lock up a few times while making turns in the parking area. Launch bar was up, as I was on land. Having the issue on land and ship though. Also, while making the track I noticed the Hi went away when the button was released. When I have issues the button stays on even after release, and the paddle wont clear it.

Not exactly what I noticed which is:

LB down: Hold NWS to get NWS. NWS HI not possible

LB up: Press NWS once activates NWS. Press again switches to NWS HI. Holding makes no difference at any stage and it won't got back either from NWS to nil nor drom NWS HI to NWS. The only way to get back to NWS is paddle switch, wait 1-2 seconds for NWS (HI) to disappear, wait again 1 second and reactivate NWS again.

I can assist on this potential issue: was doing the cold&dark direct mission on the PG map and had several problems steering the plane on the ground.

Here's a link to the complete flight track: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Bx0etdBgQs03ZERJRVv95TSFyqfhjq1u

Maybe it has something to do with ground friction when rolling:

Sometimes the nose landing gear seemed to be stuck rolling straight and then suddenly snaps into the High control causing the nose landing gear tires to just scrub over the tarmack instead of making a turn - and this was with a power setting of sometimes much less than 75% and Antiskid activated for Ground operations.

Noticed something about NWS control, regarding what I noticed two posts up. With wings locked behaviour is just as described in the quote, but as soon as it is unlocked (regardless if it's folded or not), it's just as I described. I can imagine that this is just to have perma-high gain on the deck with folded wings, so pilots don't have to keep the pinkie switch pressed all the time on flight deck whereas on land bases it's better to be able to "shift up" to NWS for turns by holding the button.

Same here. It is also causing some odd moving / spinning in place behavior while on the Stennis.

I had the same experience. Getting the front wheels stuck and wasn't able to turn in any direction anymore.

But - watching this from the outside it becomes quite obvious -I think.

NWS in HI only works if you keep a very slow taxi speed or power setting.

As soon as you put to much power to the maximum angled wheels they simply can't follow their radius. It's like the understeering in a car pushing it too fast in a turn.

So just be very gentle with speed and power and the Horny turns like a ballet dancer!

Sorry for posting no video but this is very simple to try yourselfes.

I found part of the clue.Hope helpful.

when wing fold up, NWS HI will not work as normal. Is it true on real F18? and designed to ?

Correct. The only thing missing is the ability to roll the tire off the rims when trying to force it.
