I believe Self protect mode does automatically configures the HARM and bring up relevant ddi psge from say navigational mode with the harm ready to be fired once the rwr sense a SAM painting the aircraft.

What‘s that?

When the RWR detects a radar locked onto your aircraft, the HARM format page is displayed on the LDDI, the EW on the RDDI and the HARM is readied "under pickle" so that it can be fired. This will be accompanied by an alternating tone.

At the same time, a Pullback indication (HARM, PLBK or HARM with an X through it meaning gear is not up and locked, or Master Arm is not in ARM) is displayed in the centre of the HARM format, as well as the centre of the HUD, Stores, and other format pages.

Absolutely correct.

I suppose I should add that I think the radar should (?) be in missile guidance mode, as opposed to simply locked on - can anyone confirm?

One other feature is that you can override this so that - during an attack run, for example - the HARM is not automatically selected when something launches on you, allowing you to prosecute your original target unimpeded.

I don't know the Hornet systems like a pro, but I was expecting some indication on the HUD to shoot the missile, like range to the target or a fire solution indexer.

Thanks Madbrood, that was completely new to me. And I‘m glad you mentioned the possibility to override that automatism because I was just thinking: There might be times when i don‘t want the displays to change...:)

Our F/A-18C cannot determine range to emitters. That is why some modes of the HARM we will never be able to explore because these modes require to know the range to the emitter (i.e. its exact location).

Dedicated SEAD assets like the F-16CJ used a pod called HTS that provided range and allowed for long-range shots with lock-on-after-launch.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd expect 'pre-briefed' to have loaded target corrdinates so you could shoot that with 'range known' parameters. So long as the coordinates are correct.

Correct, and this is why PB will come last of the modes. We first need to create a new waypoint systems that consists of a database of 60 points, from which they can be assigned to sequences, A/A waypoints, and pre-planned/pre-briefed target points. Part of a larger MUMI mission load task.

a first step to data cartridge?

Now that sounds really interesting!

Thanks Wags, excellent news. Now if we could also get to set up our own HARM target priority list ... I imagine it would be completely made up, but the fact that this basic functionality exists (I mean within the missile) is not secret I think,

The idea here is that the missile has a list of priority radar types to attack and can switch to another emitter if the priority one(s) shut down.

A question about HARM 'sequence' ... is this some sort of reference to automated HARM launch sequences for a given mission? For example in PB mode missiles could be launched in a particular sequence to keep the target radar suppressed for a specific amount of time.

Per Wags's post

HARM range is highly dependent on launch altitude and speed. A high and fast launch at 45k MSL at 1.3M will allow engagement out to 80 nm.

Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.
