Ice Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Two hundred people are believed to be dead after a plane crashed and sparked a giant inferno at Congonhas airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city. Terrible news.

mcnab Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 What happened? Did it hit the terminal or something? With so many casaulties, seems it hit the building full of people?
Pilotasso Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 We are following this closely because theres news from at least 1 countrymen that died in that crash. My condolences. .
Pilotasso Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 What happened? Did it hit the terminal or something? With so many casaulties, seems it hit the building full of people? There have been complaints for years the runway was too short in difficult wether conditions to allow aircraft to land safely. It was raining and an A-320 skided off the runway, went through a highway and plummeted into an airport building. It exploded in a giant fireball. .
Force_Feedback Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6903837.stm My condoleances to all involved. Man, sliding into a fuel depot, that is just too morbid. WHT did they place a fuel depot in the flight path, aren't there any regulations that fuel depots can only be placed sideways of runways and not in front/at the back of them (ie where planes fly)? I can already hear the FBW whiners start whining saying this was some computer fluke. Why aren't the procedures modified, I mean, an A-340 and a B-767 (with the inside video) botyh have crashed due to wet surfaces and insufficient braking. Can't all airlines just say that maximum, or almost maximum brakes should be selected, with autospoilers and immediate thrust reversing? And if the approach is too high that it should result in a go around, and not landing halfway on the runway and then wondering why the plane plows the field. Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:

Well here's the way it works: Spoilers will deploy whether armed or not, but if not armed then some wheel spin must occur (also will deploy with thrustreversers). Brakes are everything in this equation but even they don't matter if the wheel is not spinning (hydroplaning). Thrust reversers on a HB turbofan are not very effective, but are an aid nonetheless, and I am sure they were used here. Pilots are taught to land firmly in the touchdown zone at Vref in these conditions. If that is done then hydroplaning will not be an issue. Accidents occur when pilots land long, land fast, or decide to go-around after touchdown. Smokin' Hole Smokin' Hole My DCS wish list: Su25, Su30, Mi24, AH1, F/A-18C, Afghanistan ...and frankly, the flight sim world should stop at 1995.

Oleksandr Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 As far I know, the Airbus made an attempt to take-off again, but overflew the speedway and crashed into TAM buildings. I wonder, if the pilot managed to overfly the runway, why he didn't manage to take-off? С уважением, Olek. :smartass: _________________ - Любите ли вы небо? - Нет, я не люблю небо. Guest corvoO Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Hi, my first post here! (and sorry for my english) I'm from Brasil, and I live very close to the airport (around 2km). My neighbor works on TAM Express building hit by plane (but he on vacation damm lucky) The plane hits a shell gas station, that don't explode and the tam express building. My neighbor said that about 80 people work in TAM express =/ In fact the runaway it was wet and not grooved due a recent reform, but I don't believe this is the only cause. The plane don't spin like others hydroplaning, they crossed the runaway at high speed with reverse open, but in final part with closed reverse (according to eyewitness) Maybe the computers fail after touchdown (like Lufthansa's A320 in 1993) and when pilot recover the commands it's too late to go around, stalled and fall. The airplane revisions was ok, and both pilot a copilot have 14000h + experience. There 2 vids showing the plane at high speed, and the explosion (#11 & #12) http://g1.globo.com/Noticias/SaoPaulo/0,,MUL72010-5605,00.html
Silent Warrior Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Ugh... Can't everyone just stop dying all the time this year? Just for a few weeks... :(
