thx FF. So Yakovlev at last overtook MiG factory in trainers prototype competition. They made a huge progress. I remember time when opinions in avation press said that russian goverement more likely will choose AT for russian young pilots. That's why Yak started looking for abroad customers and that was best decision despite it's still a prototype. Contract hasn't been signed yet with russian air forces for trainer jet, has it?

They're in the second part of the Russian Air Force acception trials, but since the loss of the 3rd prototype progress slowed down a bit. I don't know if it's certified yet, but the state acceptance programme is still running, even though they have 'production aircraft' being made and delivered to the RuAF. The Mig-AT is considered less advanced, and why spend muney on something already outdated? The RuAF has already signed a limited contract with yak, for small numbers (6-8 or 12 per year). And this yeay they signed for over 100 aircraft starting from 2009.

The two prototypes are by now outfitted with the AI-222-25 engines giving 2500 kg each. Now, if we compare this to the Aeramacci M-346 with F-124 engines giving it 2830 kg of thrust each... The only thing holding down the M-346 from being the best performer is the software, but they can change that, allowing the thing to do 60 degree AoA passes and such wacky things. Did you know that on the M-346 100% thrust is considered comparable to afterburner? That's why most take offs occur with 80-90% thrust settings. The engines on the Italian version produce ~660kg more than the AI-222-25, but they lack the FOD doors.

Ouch, look at the airframe service life: 10000 hours, a bit short for a non afterburning jet.

Cool according to their site they're 5% into the development of a carreir based trainer, and the drone version (looks quite cool without a cockpit and vertical stabilizer). Labled as a recomaissance-strike drone, cool, looks evil, and that counts.

Either that or testing equipment. The Mi-28 lugged a similar (identical?) container during trials. I'm more interested in that black little radome added to the left wing.
