Another question guys. I dont live in the US, so this concept of buying something, opening, trying and having 30 days to return is kind of strange to me. I know it's kind of taken for granted in the US, but I'm curious as to what the company does with returned units? Sell them all as open box at a loss?

I get most my stuff from Amazon Prime, so I have 30 days to return for replacement or money back. In fact my very first Rift S I got at release, I was having troubles with so I submitted for replacement. Amazon even sent me the replacement no charge which I had in two days and gave me 30 days to return the first Rift S. Pretty sweet deal.

I have no idea what they do with returns, I would imagine as big a dealer as they are they just return to mfg.

So a question for those who have had lower end systems. I’ve got the chance this holiday season to either get a Rift S as is, or upgrade my system and get a Rift S another 6 months down the line. My system runs DCS just fine right now although in multiplayer heavy servers it slows down a bit at the airports when there’s a lot of traffic, but goes back up as soon as I’m away from there.

So should I get a new computer first, or get the Rift and run it on a lower end system for 6 months and then upgrade?

Current system:

I5 3570K @ 4.5 GHz

24 Gb of DDR3 RAM @ 1800Mhz

Vega 64 @ stock or slightly undervolted setting

New system:

AMD 3600X (probably with an overclock)

32 Gb RAM (somewhere around 3200Mhz)

Vega 64 still

Low FPS doesn’t bother me as long as it’s not choppy, and my family would use the Rift for other games that I’m sure would run just fine as is, but we all know how demanding DCS is

I’ve been patiently waiting for VR for years now and it’s finally at the point where it makes sense to me (clarity and computer power)

Note my system below , with which i have a good experience in DCS , with surprisingly high graphics settings .

The one possible fly in your ointment is the Vega . I have no experience with it myself , but some report poor performance in VR with AMD cards (possibly excepting the R7). I'd research this carefully before making a purchase decision .

I do highly recommend getting into vr as soon as possible :)

Unfortunately the Vega is likely here to stay as I just bought it a few months ago for a steal of a deal and an Nvidia card to match it would cost as much as I’d spend on the rest of the new computer.

Thanks though

Here they are checked on their working conditions and if OK are sold again as "second chance" but at a lower price.

Oculus software, version 1.42

Dash

  • We have added a new search feature within the Dash Store tab. This will allow you to more quickly find the games and apps you’re looking for!

Home

  • When you drop into Home for the first time, you’ll now see a new brief overview of the features and potential of Oculus Home.

  • We added a new toggle for automatically launching Home. Switching this setting off will stop Home from auto-launching in scenarios like jumping into VR and exiting out of apps. You can find this option within the Settings > General menu inside Oculus desktop app.

  • We have added a new agreement to the UGC upload process. Before a new UGC item can be uploaded for use, you are required to attest that you own this content and that it does not violate any trademarks.

Not 100% sure but they did also add a "Chats" button (Facebook roars it's ugly head). This is not mentioned in the what's new text is might be possible that it was there before.

It also included firmware updates but as far as i can see, the firmware numbers are still the same, 2.2.0 for the Rift-S, 1.14.2 for the controllers. No word on this...

After saving up my pennies and reading thru all the threads on the topic of the Rift S. I decided to go ahead and take the plunge. Yesterday my 2080 Ti and Rift S arrived. still trying to figure out the best settings - but so far I am enjoying the nice upgrade from the CV1. I can actually read the instruments without my contacts or glasses. The res is SO much better coming from the CV1.

Curious. What are your prescription numbers

Just chiming in about almost a month' use of Rift S.

No problems with sound, controllers or whatever else. Thing works like a charm.

Only issue is occasional "while screen flash", but this is common to everyone and normally doesn't bother me.

The only problem I have is my graphics card. With PD of 1.2 and no AA, I see shimmer and aliasing everywhere, but I'll have to live with this for now until next upgrade.

RTX 2070s is not enough for the Rift S?

"Enough" is quite a subjective term.

For VR I would always recommend to get the best one can reasonable get in the price range they are comfortable with.

Because truly in current VR tech with things like combat flight sims, there is no "enough" yet.

2070S should run the Rift S very well . DCS seems to have a hardware scalability problem that results in even low-end well-tuned systems giving surprisingly good results ."More" is always better when price is no object , but you will be delighted by the experience if running "less"

Yep no problem here with tracking and Rift S, do not get view re-centering.

I have two niggles with the Rift S neither of which are deal breakers for me.

Very occasional white flash - not often at all.

I have to disable my secondary monitor or else get black screen in the Rift S, long as it is disabled and only running my primary monitor no black screens.

Hoping at some point a firmware update will take care of both of those.

Absolutely loving the Rift S though - especially that image clarity. Been using it daily since May 24th.

Disable? As in do you need to unplug it from the GPU, or is switching it off enough?

Very true statement.

I put off getting my first VR headset for a very long time based on the impression of not having a beefy system.

I was stunned to have a laptop with 1060 6gb max Q and core i5 do quite well with a samsung Odyssey plus. I now use similarly configured desktop system and no show stopping issues.

I should have taken the leap earlier than I did if I had known better.

I get intrigued sometimes to see fellows with the 2080ti and i9 having vr related issues like low fps.

A 2070super should be a good gpu for vr.

The beefy a system is the better for vr I believe though.

I play Rift s with a standard 2070 (MSI gaming z overclocked version but not -s version) and it runs well. PD 1.2 and MSAA 2x. No issues, I'm fine both with graphics and performance. You can always do better but DCS is not GPU-limited but more CPU-limited, so I think a 2070(+-s) is a good performance / price ratio. For DCS it is better to overclock the CPU (or eventually change it) rather than change the GPU to boost performance.

That was a post from some time ago you responded to, that has since been resolved - not sure how probably one of the Oculus updates. I just tried it again one day and it worked fine, and has been since. Oculus also resolved the brief white flashes mentioned in that post.

No problem now using Rift S with two monitors running on my end.

My eyes are so fubar... strabismus, nearsighted in one, farsighted in the other... it was actually really hard to see through the rift, had to twist it a little to one side and dial the IPD really low and even then that sucker was trying to make me blind. With the S its easy to get it close enough.

I feel for you guys with perfect vision, where "close enough" is just enough to irritate the daylights out of you. People like me are in a different boat. We have a hard time fusing images, but in our defense we get really good at sorting ambiguity. Get really good at using environmental cues to make up for the lack of stereoscopic vision, amazing the ability of the brain to "fill in the gaps" information-wise.

We don't really care if things line up -- that's kind of a lost cause -- and having even a slightly larger sweet spot really helps a lot. A real lot. It's just amazing to be able to slap an optical device on my head and have it just work, I mean, dang. Coulda knocked me over with a feather.

I don't mean to rant but I imagine there are people like me out there quietly wondering if the Rift S will make their eyeballs bleed or something... I'm here to tell you, go for it dude.

I can totally relate. I'm a surgeon with a squint, so no depth perception. Strangely, it helped when I started laparoscopic surgery, as I could adapt quickly to a screen vs the real life with 3d, and now, with 3d laparoscopy, I cant take advantage of that.

Waiting to see what my experience with the Rift will be.

Since no one stepped forward to explain this, I’ll give it a shot.

The FPS of 80 or 90 that you see in 4K when use DCS FPS (Alt+Shift+Pause/Break), is the true FPS for your settings. When you put on the Rift S, the Oculus looks at your actual FPS, and if it’s 80-89, it cuts it in half to 40 FPS, and fills in the missing frames to make 40 FPS so it is smooth. If your FPS is 90 and higher, it sets it to 45 FPS, and fills in the missing frames to smooth it. So, when you’re seeing 40 FPS, your system is actually running at 80 FPS and higher.

My regular glasses are progressives, but I have a single lens pair just for use with the computer.

Couple of questions.

1. Why does the Rift halve the fps in the first place?

2. The glasses you use - are they with the numbers for your distance vision?

I'm aware of that but since i'm on the beta channel and i received an update, the "what's new" link sended me to the wrong release notes like if i was on the stable channel. Also, on a previous update i already got the info about setting all versions to a new version number system so this "what's new" made the confusion just a bit bigger.

Also, it would be nice if they gave a bit more info besides "bug fixes" for info on software/firmware.

For the moment i do not have big issues, only 2 small ones:

- Sometimes the Oculus service crashes if i reload DCS a second time after coming back to the desktop. For moment i suspect it's the OTT somehow because if that's not running, this doesn't happen.

- Every now and then i get the message that the headset is not detected. If i then look into the Oculus software, it shows connected but still has an overall red cross but the headset works without a problem. Using the software restart button in the Oculus software solves the problem.

1. Why does the Rift halve the fps in the first place?

Look at it as it where Adaptive Vsync in 2D. If it can't keep up the normal refreshrate (80hz), it switches back to half of that, being 40 (or 20, 10 etc...).

The switch between the regular and the adaptive can cause some slight stutter.

Solving Rift S connection on start up

Just thought I'd add to the growing list of things to try if you're having trouble connecting your headset and controllers after start up.

Now, bear in mind I'm only 2 weeks in with the rift S, like many on here I've had problems getting an inconsistent headset not connected problem when starting windows 10. Not helped by the constant forced Oculus updates.

Well, I think I've solved it!

During start-up of my pc I keep an eye on the rift s for the orange power light between the lenses of the headset to come on, followed by the white connected light once windows is all up and running. If I don't see those lights I know the headset is not powered and connected to the DP.

Rather than mess about disconnecting the USB and DP plugs I right click on the windows start icon, then left click on the device manager option. Scroll down to the bottom which is USB controllers, find the rift s USD HUB, there are normally 2, with the upper one showing a warning triangle for a fault. CLICK ON UNINSTALL DEVICE, don't worry. Then restart windows...…straight away the orange light will appear in the headset followed by the white light and your good to fly!

Windows reinstalls the missing USB HUB during startup when it finds the headset already connected. Hope this helps.

Posted

That's a workaround but you will notice it won't work 100% all the time (but it prevented me diving under the desk every time). Sometimes i had to unplug/replug to make it work (on motherboard USB).

Same goes for the light inside the headset. Orange is always a no go, if the Oculus service isn't running it's always orange but if it's orange, it doesn't always means the service isn't running.

Same goes up for when it's white. White doesn't always mean it's working.
