So I was doing some research and I found out that at least in the 1990's that the USN was either trimming their engines VERY low to the point that the TF30-P-414A was only producing a measley 17,077 lbf of thrust at MAX A/B or that the TF30-P-414A was actually that low on thrust. Other sources on the internet (including a study by the USN on engines for the F-14) state that the engine produces the same 20,900 lb of thrust as the earlier TF30s. Wish I could post it but it's from the 80's.

Therefore, I don't know if anyone would actually want a 1990's F-14A if the engine power is truly that low.

That said, does anyone know if that version of the TF30 was actually that underpowered or did the USN simply trim them down after the Cold War to keep them alive longer? I imagine the latter because that is lower than an F-4 Phantom's engines in thrust!

That is also the (dry) thrust value I could find for the TF30, but you're comparing its dry thrust with the afterburner thrust of the J79 :P

I thought that too! But it is not the dry thrust of the TF30. I can't send the link because I am at work now but this F-14 pilots specifically states in A/B (search on youtube: "F-14 Tomcat at the Wings of Eagles Airshow 1997", go to 2:20). Finally if you manage to find the F-14A manual from 2005 or 2006 (can't remember, nor am I allowed to link it here), it definitely states 17,077 lbf of thrust per engine in burner and 10,000 something lbs in MIL. I have yet to read more. Maybe the manual also says somewhere in there as to why. No luck so far.

Also this website - though admittedly is not a source - is consistent with the statement: http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-specification.htm

Yes, but that was decades ago and with no spare parts being delivered from the US the Iranian air force's jets of American origin should be in pretty bad shape by now unless they learned to build that tech themselves.

Articles out there suggest that intelligence reports that they are. With some quick googling, it sounds like they have increased their airworthy fleet numbers, while simultaneously increasing the capabilities of the platform.

The Tom Cooper books indicates that, as long ago as the mid 80's, the Iranians were up to building parts that the US figured could only be obtained by themselves. I think some of the computer chips might be off the cards, and the Iranians dont seem quite up to making a full copy of the Phoenix missile (they can build Phoenix bodies, with Hawk missile internals).

There was even talk ive read online of fitting Russian fighter engines in the F14's. Personally I doubt thats possible, but I would LOVE to see someone try. :)

It will most likely be the late model one, due to commonality of systems. Keep in mind, if they get very different, just external resemblance doesn't change the fact it needs a complete rework. All ''variant aircraft'' we've received had little/no differences. I expect the F-14 will be similar.

Hello HB

It's been a long time since we had not any specific information on the development of the F-14A that we are supposed to have with our favorite module..

Did you start developing the F-14A ?

What is the version that we will have ?

Put me down for late 80s/early 90s A model, and hopefully an Iranian A. I wish we knew what set up the Iranian F-14s are in now, and that we could replicate them. They've developed their own pseudo Phoenix missile, and supposedly have overhauled the original electronics and replaced with Soviet/Chinese avionics and radar. Also supposedly they have mated up several soviet A/A missiles with the airframe. Its a damn shame that the US didn't continue the development arc of the F-14. What could have been...

engine nozzles of "A" variant look very ugly.

I hope they release carrier before this tomcat A. I doubt i will ever use it when it is released

I don't mean to be rude, but I legitimately wonder why when people do not like something, they go to a convention of people who like something and then complain or have the need to state how much they don't like said thing.

I wouldn't go to a soccer match and ask everyone why they love soccer so much and I find it boring.

If you're not going to contribute, you really don't have to say anything.
