Official answer: no, it is not required for the campaign, and you can easily complete the campaign without ever tanking. There is a tanker airborne in most missions for you to use if needed. It should not be necessary though unless you've burned way more gas than expected, I've completed every mission in the campaign many times without tanking. You also do not need to return and land to complete the mission. Once you get the "MISSION COMPLETE" message, you can end the mission at any time, even if you don't have enough gas to make it back. So you'd really only need to tank if you somehow run out of gas before completing your mission. One long mission with a higher chance of requiring a refuel also has a land base along the path with the option of landing for a refuel rather than tanking. Though, I am also in the "tanking is therapeutic" camp. It's a nice pure skill challenge that's rewarding to complete, and no one is actively trying to kill me. 2 Oil In The Water Hornet Campaign. Great that is good to know thanks much! The Hornet's radar is bugged and won't lock on to any helicopters, at least the ones I've tried. The Flanker and Eagle have no problems. I think this is a reported bug and hopefully will be fixed at some point. Minor spoilers below (highlight the text to see it)... My gunnery pretty much sucks so I had a hard time gunning the slow moving Mi-8. After multiple attempts I gave up and adjusted my loadout in the ME. I got rid of some Mavs and loaded up some AMRAAMs instead. Or maybe it was AIM-9s, I don't remember. My wingman was really good at getting the surface targets with his Mavs so I just let him take care of the boats. After he was done, I just shot AMRAAM in VISUAL mode or heaters at the helicopters. Pretty cheap move but it helped to advance the campaign.
pete_auau Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 There is a dcs bug already reported and noted fa18 radar cannot pick up helos under 115 knotts 1

Hornet's radar is having issues. AIM-9 shots from the rear are a good tactic, they don't seem to defend against them if the missile is fired from the read quarter. It's also possible to lock helos with Mavs. Otherwise the best tactic I found was to fly super low, lower than the helos, pass right under them and squeeze the gun trigger as the funnel passes through the helo. dburne Posted August 29, 2021 Posted August 29, 2021 Ok so after getting through finally Mission 2 by just returning to the Carrier after killing the boats, I completed Mission 3 today with no issues. Took me a couple of attempts but finally was able to down all the enemy aircraft. I "think" my wingman may have got one, I know for the most part he was not much help in this one. And of course to celebrate I did return to the Carrier for a nice trap and even taxi'd to parking and shut her down. Great fun! Looking forward to getting in more time with the campaign this upcoming week. 1 Don B EVGA Z390 Dark MB | i9 9900k CPU @ 5.1 GHz | Gigabyte 4090 OC | 64 GB Corsair Vengeance 3200 MHz CL16 | Corsair H150i Pro Cooler |Virpil CM3 Stick w/ Alpha Prime Grip 200mm ext| Virpil CM3 Throttle | VPC Rotor TCS Base w/ Alpha-L Grip| Point Control V2|Varjo Aero|
dburne Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 (edited) Ok so I finished this campaign today. Great fun thanks so much for all the hard work you have put into this!! I learned how to set up weapons in PB mode and also got to use some GBU 24's for the first time. One thing I especially liked was the fact one could progress to the next mission or not, long as you don't die. Nice way to do it. So thanks again I thoroughly enjoyed it and undoubtedly will play it again before too long. Edit: I would also add I used the cold start version, and thanks for the extra work in making that version available as well - love doing those cold starts for the missions. The first mission you play is technically Mission 0, it's a prologue and was one of the last missions I wrote. So which mission is "2" depends on how you're counting. I’ve flown it probably 20 times and can’t seem to “beat” it. I knock out the SAM radar with the Harm missile and then drop my cluster bombs on the factory defense (usually not too much of an impact). Then wingman and I take care of the F-5’s and incoming Mig-29’s. At that point, all of my guys have dropped their bombs on the factory and head back. My wingman and I exfil the area. I land back on carrier and end mission but then have to replay it because it hasn’t been passed. What am I missing? What actually signals the mission accomplished for this one? thanks!! I finally did this today. Came back after doing ROTPL campaign. Basically had to strap on some jdams and take out the Silkworms myself - did it with one tank, a Harm and shit loads of AMRAMS. Fortunately my wingman was helpful with the Mig29s. Still landed with 1500lbs to spare! It did take me about 8 goes before though. 1

Refrain from peeking at the mission editor and F10 map and you should be good. I made the mistake of looking at the mission editor on one of the earlier missions and the surprise was spoiled. Since then, all I do is review the briefing text and images carefully and refer to the kneeboards while in flight.
Bunny Clark Posted October 9, 2021 Author Posted October 9, 2021 On the current version, the only things that should be visible in the Mission Planner and F10 map are those things that would be known by friendly intel, though occasionally some mission critical things are allowed to be visible in the F10 map as an aid in case the player looses track of them. If you want an entirely realistic experience, you should not be using the F10 map at all. 1 Oil In The Water Hornet Campaign.
