I'm really getting tired of this -- AI tasking

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to sit down and FLY a simple CAP mission with a bunch of red aircraft, and a few simple tasks. I don't want to spend hours and hours tweaking in the ME a mission just to fly it.

ED - this is getting ridiculous. You can't get the AI to perform ANY task in ANY mission. The canned missions are hosed, user missions are hosed. For crying out loud, PLEASE FIX THE AI!!

Since ED is too busy on new modules, could someone please take some of THEIR time and take a look at the mission uploaded? I have an F14 flight intercepting the Mig25s, and 4 harriers performing ASHIP. None of the AI flights perform their taskings and just return home. Can someone explain why? I thank you in advance.

What do I have to do to get simple orders to work? Or are we resigned to fly in an empty environment? Back-and-forth of the ME, fly the mission, back to ME, tweak, fly, ME, tweak...

I refuse to purchase more modules until the core is fixed.

Hi

If you need help please ask, there is no need for the sarcasm.

Having a quick look at the mission you have set flight paths for all of your aircraft, but you have not set any advanced waypoint actions. This is where you can refine what tasks you are giving the AI, without it they will just fly the route set and then RTB.

A guide for mission editing can be found in your dcs install location and the Docs folder.

Also there are tutorials on youtube for using the mission editor.

We do have instant action, missions, and campaigns for most aircraft, but to use the editor will take a little research and patience to learn.

thank you

Considering the amount of excellent SP campaigns out there that rely on quite complex AI instructions and triggers seem - for the most part - to function very well, I suggest that you quit blaming the developer for your lack of comprehension, swallow your pride and do some research on how advance waypoint functions work.

Like so many other aspects of DCS, the AI instructional routines are flexible and can be sophisticated.

However flexibility comes at a price; the trade-off is that it requires you to do some leg work.

The information is on these boards and others right now, and asked in a more civilised manner, people are often quite willing to direct you to the appropriate areas.

But since you've been so obnoxious towards ED, I'm not prepared to give you some easy outs. Get off your butt and go look yourself.

The AI is not broken and while creating missions in the ME requires set up, it does not require hours.

I think the biggest issue might be the default tasking. They don't work well for detailed missions. However, how would ED even setup a default AI setting for complex mission? Set a range limit for CAP tasks for example? If they set it to 50 miles is that too small or too big?

DD Fenrir put it well. In order to make the AI in DCS capable, it needs to flexible, and that requires user input. That said, perhaps we need more resources to guide new users.

In general whenever you put down an AI aircraft:

-Set waypoints

-Delete the default tasking unless you know for sure it's what you want

-Add Advanced Waypoint tasks and set them according to your mission

-Along with the tasking, set AI options (RoE, Reaction to Threat, Radar use)

-Consider if the AI needs supporting units like AWACS to spot targets.

In other words RTFM

To be fair, the Official ED chapter about the Mission Editor (it doesn't earn a manual for it alone) is very old and lacks a lot of information, plus it is very short on practical examples .. in reality one learns the Editor trough experience and from reading this Forum, not really from the manual.

I'm amazed by EDs customer support. A really unfriendly rant and BIGNEWY downloads, troubleshoots and posts a polite response and explanation within a few minutes.

Very impressive. :)

(Whish I would be that calm and friendly!)

Thanks, we do try. :)

The editor can be a challenge to learn it is complex in nature as it is rich in features.

It can put some people off so it is better to try and help where possible, when I first came to the community it was the users who helped me learn and they were patient with me. ;)

Mission editor usage is not too easy while doing first steps, but it is worth using it and worth digging into (but not too deep).

There are so many aspects that bring us to 180 in a short time, but designing missions using AI easily brings me to 240 sometimes.

On the other hand the most things can be handled somehow, using tips & tricks from this humble sub-forum here.

Bignewy, Grimes, and many other motivated users are doing a WONDERFUL job here by helping people with their knowledge and experience.

What I often see is AI flying classical CAP tasks, then flying through the whole map engaging something somewhere somehow.

The CAP tasks urgently needs more detailed settings (like the ESCORT task, where I can choose which targets might intrude to the escorted aircraft at a certain distance and which not).

The whole editor - for me personally - is not consistent, not in depth and not in quality, and this is one of the things that let's me slowly turn away from all this for the time beeing.

I am still looking forward for changes, and I feel that ED meanwhile has taken notice about all this.
