imacken Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 The 3080 doesn't seem like it's much of an upgrade over the 2080ti at 4k. https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-synthetic-and-gaming-performance-leaked 19% for the 3080 over the 2080ti at 4k in rasterization/DX11 (Far Cry New Dawn) 18% with DX12/DLSS/4k (Shadow of the Tomb Raider) We'll see what things look like for the 3090 in a week and a half but I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm beginning to wonder myself now. If we are talking about a 20% gain at 4K and VR, then I may hold back on this purchase. But, let's wait and see some real benchmarking. Fusedspine33 Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 Yes, it looks like a good deal, but not necessarily if you are a 2080 Ti owner. I wasn't trying to rub salt. I still run a 1080ti for my DCS PC. It drives a 4K screen and a second screen for my front dash. The 20xx series brought the new RTX features which aren't used here and not much raw horsepower. I love VR, but DCS looks great on a 55" panel. Interested to see if the 3090 can pull off 3 - 4K panels. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

The 2080 Ti is a great card and I always upgrade, but I’m just beginning to wonder about how much of an upgrade the 3080 or even the 3090 will be. Supmua Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 (edited) Real problem is you need no faster GPUs for flat screen games and VR users are only a small group. While your second statement is true, I really disagree with the first. For modern games with modern PC setup, GPU is the limiting factor and that's why people are rushing out benchmarks for all those games out there to show substantial gain in FPS. We're no longer in the dark ages and gaming at low res is no longer the norm. If you play at 540p yeah sure the GPU won't help much, but who would do that these days. At high resolution it is the GPU that will dictate your FPS. Not convinced? Check out this video below. Edited September 14, 2020 by Supmua PC: 5800X3D/4090, 11700K/3090, 9900K/2080Ti. For me, on a monitor, I run demanding games at 4K on ultra settings at a solid, frame limited 60 fps using a 2080 Ti. The only area I will see an improvement with a faster GPU is VR in DCS. That is unless I buy a 4K 144MHz monitor, of course. Djdirty76 Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 (edited) Are you sure you meant to say 1080ti and not 2080ti, otherwise that is not that impressive? Yes I’m sure. 2080ti does the same test at 115fps. And 2080 super at 100fps. Edited September 14, 2020 by Djdirty76
Supmua Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 I run in 4K as well and I do not get solid 60 fps in Channel or Normandy maps (F-16 free flying mission). Now add some export panels (DDI, AMPCD) to that setup, turn on the mirrors, and the fps will drop even more. Saying that you don’t need a new GPU for flat screen games is simply not true and too generalized. There are newer games that are much more demanding (than DCS), and there are also a lot of people who will benefit from more powerful GPU for DCS, myself included. Unlike you, I do get a solid 60fps on Channel and Normandy. If I didn't, I would agree with you. Saying that I don't need a new GPU for flat screen games simply IS TRUE - at the moment. I run DRD2, Battlefield V and DCS etc. at ultra settings at a rock solid 60 fps. what could I improve? Even in VR on my Reverb, I have solid 90 fps on titles like Project Cars 2 and HL:A. So, let me repeat, for me, the only areas where I need a new GPU are VR in DCS, or if I buy a 144Hz monitor. Having said all that, I almost certainly will buy a 3080 or 3090 because that's what I do, not necessarily because I actually need to spend more cash! Motomouse Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 I am sure there are a FEW people out there needing faster GPUs for flat screens. But the majority of potential gaming customers does not even own hardware to profit by faster GPUs. Ergo NVidia has enough time to develop fancy features for deep learning, raytracing and business customers, but does not focus enough for our niche needs for faster rasterization. But dont take me too seriously here, I just want to shorten my waiting time for my next GPU ;-) VIC-20@1.108 MHz, onboard GPU, 5KB RAM, μυωπία goggles, Competition Pro HOTAS
