Global - 3900x3900

Per app (DCS) 2800x2800.

I am saying in DCS, that per app setting of 2800x2800 is not applying - at least for me. It is taking the global of 3900x3900 and applying it.

I have just tested, my other games are not doing this - just DCS.

Perhaps it is only me this is happening too, was just bringing to attention in case others might want to check.

You can’t forget percentages, that’s what it’s all about! You need to forget pixels.
And, it IS applying it as you are applying a factor of 1 (100%) to the global res factor.
You need to take 2800x2800 as your factor 1.0. Anything different to that is applied to your global setting, no matter what it is.
It’s easy to see. Set 50% global and 100% per app. Look at fpsVR and you will see res is 50%. Reverse them and you will still see 50%.
Put global and per app to 50%, and you will see 25% as 0.5*0.5 is 0.25.
it’s not helpful that SteamVR shows pixels in per app settings. However, if you hover over it or click on the ‘I’ it explains it.

We will agree to disagree.

😉

I can only say mine is working properly as expected in other games, but not DCS. I have tested this a good bit today.

It is confusing, Don, but your understanding of this is incorrect.
DCS/SteamVR SS behaviour is correct.
Keep your global at 100% and then try per app at 50% and 200%. Look at fpsVR when doing it.

So you are saying if my global default is 150% and reads 3900x3900, then I set the per app custom resolution to 2800x2800, then it is not supposed to apply 2800x2800 for that particular app?

Correct. It is applying a factor of 1.0 as that is your 100%. If you want to reduce the pixels, you have to apply a per app factor of less than 100%.

Global = 150% (3900x3900)

Per app DCS - 52% (2916x2916).

You say I am wrong when I say it "should" be running at 2916x2916?

If that is the case I will never understand Steam VR math, nor why it seems DCS is the only one not doing this for me.

In the meantime on my end, I will just use global resolution setting for what I want DCS to run at.

Yes, you are wrong. Sorry!

You need to look at the per app as a factor that gets applied to the global setting.  In your example above, your final res would be 1.5*0.52, i.e. 0.78 or 78%.

As I said, it is not helpful that SteamVR shows pixels as well as %age in the per app screen.  If it only showed %age that gets applied to the global res, it would make more sense.

It works the same for me in all other games.  It's a SteamVR algorithm and shouldn't have anything to do what what game is being played.

Hmm I will check that out and see. You are saying you are restarting the Vive software/Steam VR after the change?

I do exit out of DCS to make the change.

The change for me occurs after quitting and restarting DCS. In MSFS, I can just switch out of VR and switch back in again to see the change.

Yes, it is always safer to quit and restart DCS for the SS changes to take effect.

Easy to test as I said above. Do 200% and 100%, look in fpsVR. You’ll see 200% showing for the SS. Then, do 50% and 50%. You’ll then see 25% in fpsVR.
Also, the behaviour you described many posts up at the beginning  of this discussion is totally consistent with the correct behaviour as I am describing.

Happened to me before because I had not set DCS properly in Steam (think added the stable instead of beta or something like that), anyway was wrong .exe

Thanks,

Yeah I am not sure why it is not applying properly for me in DCS, so I am just adjusting my global res down to where I want it for DCS.

My other games the per app settings are working fine.

No I get what you are saying. But I am convinced the per app profile for resolution setting is not working for me in DCS only. For whatever reason, if I want to adjust I do it with global resolution. I do not have this issue with other games - and it may just be me who knows.

Now I just did a test and was surprised. I turned Motion Compensation off for my Vive Pro 2.

And I will be danged it looked a lot better. Even at 45 fps the artifacting was not as bad as when it was on. And it was surprisingly smooth.

Don, just do the fpsVR test I suggested. You’ll see it’s working fine.
Re MC, I agree it is better off atm, but still not great. Still get the blurs when moving (not turning) head from side to side. When on, there are too many horrible artefacts. Bring back SteamVR motion smoothing!

One crazy thing I notice is that the audio hum completely disappears when looking at dark scenes.  This is very reproducible in Virtual Desktop, looking down at the black background and the hum goes away.  Look in up to do web surfing and the hum is back.  Still trying to figure out why.

Actually simply bringing up Steam overlay in SteamVR Home also stops the hum.

I even reduced the DCS resolution in Steam VR  to 20% with Global set at default of 150%.

Even at 20%, I still can only get 30 fps with a lot of stutter moving side to side. Same as if I had it set to 150%.

So I go back and set global to 100% which is "around" 3200 per eye, and set the per app for DCS to the same 100%.

DCS - 45 fps very smooth, no stutter side to side at all.

Again for whatever reason, my per app setting for DCS only does not appear to be doing anything at all. It does in my other games, I can see that immediately, just not DCS.

In any event, I will stick to using strictly global setting for DCS only. And all is good.

After all the experience and performance is what is all about. And that is what gets it for me.

I am just a little puzzled as to why only I am seeing this.

Here's how to disable autobrightness (it's on Reddit).

For me it's in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\VIVEDriver\App\ViveVRRuntime\ViveVR\ViveVRServer\config\default.vrsettings

There are parameters for contrast and saturation setting also which is nice.

Does anyone know how to stop the VP2 from hogging the audio device when not in use?

Other headsets I've used would go back to the system default device when sleeping or not in use, but my VP2, if switched on, is always the audio device whether it is being used or not. And that is a pain. It means I have to switch it off when not in use.

Any ideas on that?
