Best practice is to turn off the link box when not in use, sooo..consider it a reminder to do so? LOL

I had an interesting thing happen today. Usually between flights I will close down Vive Console/Steam VR then just relaunch when I get ready to fly again.

Well today I left Vive Console/Steam VR running when I took about a 15-20 min break. Not the game, was at desktop.

Upon returning I put the headset back on, and had nothing but snow in the image. Like what a tv channel might show when signal lost.

Scary - I restarted Vive Console/Steam VR and had the regular image back.

Don't know if that is a sign of something or maybe by design or what as a screen saver measure. Who knows...

Have spent already several hours with it today and still rocking along nicely.

I'm hoping they work through some of these bugs with firmware updates.

That said, I got clarification from HTC that the headset will only cool off when the link box is off.

Quote from their email to me:

Quote

...indeed the only solution that we have in order to stop the VIVE Pro 2 from getting warm even when it is on standby, of course, I would like to apologize if this is not the most convenient for you.

So concluding, every time you stop playing VR, I would recommend you disconnect the link box from the PC and the power in order to keep your headset's temperature regulated so you can have a comfortable experience once you get back to play.

Was out of town for the weekend...looks like a vive console beta update came through.  First look impression, motion smoothing seemed better.  Also, audio seemed different like the comms voices seemed slightly lower in pitch...weird...going to fly more tonight and see what else changed.

Nope no changes...

Does anyone know how to stop the VP2 from hogging the audio device when not in use?

Other headsets I've used would go back to the system default device when sleeping or not in use, but my VP2, if switched on, is always the audio device whether it is being used or not. And that is a pain. It means I have to switch it off when not in use.

Any ideas on that?

I just click on the sound icon on the taskbar and switch back to my speaker setup.

The Oculus solution is worse since it hogs everything on my PC preventing me from switching especially the mic input, I have to manually disable it.

Now, for more detailed manual settings.

Here's what you can do with the default.vrsettings file:

   "htcvr" : {
      "ApplyHiddenMesh" : true,
      "AutoSavingProfiler" : false,

      "EnableProfiler" : false,
      "EnableRollingCorrection" : false,
	  "EnableASW" : false,
	  "EnableDepthATW" : false,
      "GCDown" : 0.02,
      "GCDownChange" : 0.01,
      "GCUp" : 0.03,
      "GCUpChange" : 0.01,
      "QuatPredict" : true,
      "ShowPresentStatus" : 30,
      "SteamVRVsyncToPhotons" : 0.0,
      "TransPredict" : true,
      "ghostCorrection" : true,
      "loglevel" : 2,
      "nightModeBlue" : 0.92,
      "nightModeGreen" : 1,
      "nightModeRed" : 1,
      "showMirrorView" : false,
	  "showTimingVisualizer" : false,
      "Contrast" : 0.1,
      "Saturation" : 1.15,
	  "CloseCUWithoutApp" : true,
	  "BlockKeyThreshold" : 0.75,
	  "preferFrameRate" : 90.0,
	  "DisplaySetting" : 0,
	  "PerformanceMode" : false,

	  "EnableBrightnessControl" : false,
	  "BrightnessPercentage" : 80,
	  "DisplayResolutionAuto" : true,
	  "DisplayResolutionMode" : 0,
	  "runtimeStandalone" : true

I up my contrast to 0.1 (default is 0.004), saturation to 1.15 (default 1.0), brightness 80%.  There are lots of parameters that you can play with.

I don't have VP2 yet but I'm guessing it is similar to VP1 as I do have similar issue.  I always keep default windows sound to speaker and set to Vive audio in DCS.  So only DCS will always play through Vive.  One issue with this is that volume control on Vive doesn't work.

So lately, I've been using this

Home | Audio Switcher

Simple hotkey to switch between audio devices.  This should be Windows default feature.

You won't believe this, but I changed my tune on the VP2... again! Because.... I fixed it. 🙂

There must have been some software setting or something from a left over headset prior that was  it all up.

I methodically went through and uninstalled everything I could, manually cleaning up configs too, and reinstalled. I have used vive/pimax/G2 prior.

It is a new headset. I feel like a dumbass though. But atleast the hardware is good.

So yeah, now I can see what you mean. Pretty clear edge to edge. 😆

But you only have to this once. After that no need to disable it again and again after a PC restart.

The LCD screen is definitely great, now with options to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, and a ton of other settings if you muck around with the default.vrsetting file. The only things that would top it are those in the enterprise headsets that cost minimum of 4K (Varjo, Xtal). The Varjo-VR3, though, is very tempting since it offers human-like vision in the center field of view.

Those adjustments were/are already available in the reshade mod. A totally essential tool in the DCS/VR world.

I think this may have happened to others as well. I have seen some post about the VP2 and I think wow they must have got a pretty bad unit, cause mine is looking really good.

When I got mine I totally uninstalled WMR and Steam VR and cleaned out all the leftover files in all the appdata folders before setting up my Vive Pro 2.

Thankfully - thanks to the VP2 - don't think I will be installing WMR again anytime soon.

Yeah it wouldn't surprise me. It must have had some weird as hell stretch applied to the image. You'd think the vive console installer would blow those settings away during setup, but apparently not. Hopefully it helps someone else reading this if they get the same problem.

I will have to play with the brightness for sure, it's too bright by default. Makes god rays more apparent.

And Virtual Desktop is brilliant now. Everything is so sharp and clear. Watching movies in the imax cinema is awesome. The 5k+ just had too much screen door for me in that particular instance. I can just make out screen door even with the VP2, but only when watching movies at imax screen distance. Impressive!

Hmm, can't see anything interesting to report in today's Vive Console update.  Motion compensation still poor.

EDIT: I take it all back.  Now, when I quite Vive Console/SteamVR, my sound device goes back to the system default.  Exactly what I was moaning about a few posts up!

I recommend buying a used Vive wand from eBay in case you need to setup play space, etc.  I’ve seen one as low as $35.  The older model only works with basestation 1.0, so be careful about that.

The Vive Pro 2 is the best headset that I’ve used so far, but you need to know how to set it correctly to get optimal performance.  It’s full of little quirks since HTC pretty much recycled most components from the Vive Pro and the software is still in the premature stage, but the image quality that you can squeeze out of this headset is crazy good.  In MSFS at full res 150%SS it’s just like playing on my 4KTV, but everything is right in my face instead of 3 feet away (fps is bad but ok at 70% rendering scale).
