Gunfreak Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 I know it's best to stay with one and learn it proper. But I have, Spit, Jug, a-10, F18, F16 and Huey. I've shelved the F16 for now as I have the F18 stick and it feel strange using that long stick on that sci fi joystick the F16 has. I've also put away the spit temporarily (even though it's by far the plane I'm most proficient with) but I plan on building the authentikit spitfire thottle and stick, and want to do that before I go back to it. But the F18 stick works fine for F18(obviously) the P47 and the warthog. I love the multifunction of the F18, but man it's fun to just snipe enemies with the GAU-8. I bought the A10 way back in 2013, but my joystick was old and rusty, so never played it much. So it's the old A10ci think with one of the upgrades. My question is, is it worth getting the upgrades? Are there better toturials for the upgraded version? The F18 and F16 have a lot of similarities, but A10 is a very different animal when it comes to systems. i7 13700k @5.2ghz, GTX 5090 OC, 128Gig ram 4800mhz DDR5, M2 drive.
G.J.S Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 ED & developers give you the tools, how you use them is entirely up to you. Unlike women, planes don’t mind if you use other planes, planes don’t mind you talking about other planes, nor do they mind you looking at other planes on the internet . The differences between the A-10’s are very marked. The original A was very much a grunts plane, dependable, easy, tough. The C & C2 are much more systems intensive, and will require familiarity and frequent use to get to understand them, and use them effectively. But I agree, the A-10 has a certain something that is highly addictive, myself I prefer the A. 3 - - - The only real mystery in life is just why kamikaze pilots wore helmets? - - -
schurem Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 (edited) Haha I feel you man. I own almost everything in the DCS stable, but I am hardly tactical in a third of them, and I haven't touched another third. Then the ones I know how to start and fight with, I am hardly proficient. But hey!, we're having fun, aren't we? As to the question wether the A-10C upgrade is worth it? IMO, yes it is. The helmet mounted sight is worth the price of admission in itself. APKWS is hilarious. 5ephir0th Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 Viper and Hornet were competitors from the same program so the similiarities, but as you said, Warthog is a (completly) diferent animal, he was born to killing tanks and then becoming the absolute CAS machine, it makes ground pounding looks easy and with the Scorpion helmet it´s like using cheats on a regular videogame. I fly regulary many modules (Viper, Hornet, Warthog, Tomcat, Black Shark...) and i love the Warthog stick for all of them, the smaller size and the aditional HAT made me no to change for the Hornet one 1 NZXT H9 Flow Black | Intel Core i5 13600KF OCed P5.6 E4.4 | Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX | G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo DDR5-6000 32GB C30 OCed 6600 C32 | nVidia GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition | Western Digital SN770 2TB | Gigabyte GP-UD1000GM PG5 ATX 3.0 1000W | SteelSeries Apex 7 | Razer Viper Mini | SteelSeries Artics Nova 7 | LG OLED42C2 | Xiaomi P1 55" Virpil T-50 CM2 Base + Thrustmaster Warthog Stick | WinWing Orion 2 F16EX Viper Throttle | WinWing ICP | 3 x Thrustmaster MFD | Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals | Oculus Quest 2 DCS World | Persian Gulf | Syria | Flaming Cliff 3 | P-51D Mustang | Spitfire LF Mk. He is behind that building over there, waiting for you. I dunno what he wants but have fun. But on the serious side 11 hours ago, Gunfreak said: I bought the A10 way back in 2013, but my joystick was old and rusty, so never played it much. So it's the old A10ci think with one of the upgrades. My question is, is it worth getting the upgrades? Are there better toturials for the upgraded version? I am a bit biased, since the A10C was what got me hooked with A2G ind the first place, and have not done anything else. I have the tank killer upgrade, and would say it is totally worth it. Makes the A-10C even more mean. Also what is worth mentioning, is that the flight model changed, so the Hog is much more agile even with heavier payloads. Turns like the devil now. Scorpion HMCS provides much better SA. It also works great with my T.16000m FCS Hotas, because i do not own the Warthog stick. But since you have the Warthog setup, even with F18 stick, it should be even better for you. I cannot say that much about the Hornet. I own it and the Supercarrier, have tried to like it but Hornet performed carrier ops are not my thing. 2. Too much system management for me. 3. I prefer to focus on A2G with a lot of hands down flying experience, and use A2A only as a backup option. I leave the 40.000 feet, BVR SPAMRAAM fights to others that thrive in it. No offence. BUT, this is not about me, but about you. Since you have the most time in a warbird, I would recommend the A-10C, if you can afford it, the upgrade is totally worth it. You still have the good old HOG but with new tricks up the sleeve, and additions in my opinion are always welcome. But before you do that, my recommendation, and also something I have done to re-learn the Hog is as follows: 1. Before you update to A-10C II , do the official Tutorials in a chronological order for the Legacy A-10, since they teach you how to manage the HOTAS buttons that are king on the Hog. And the next tutorials teach you how to use that hotas switchology in a practical manner, while still being handheld during the procedures. Great thing to train muscle memory before going into actual combat. 2. After you have done the tutorials, for the A-10C, and know how to oparerate the Hotas for the legacy Hog, refer to Chucks guide https://www.mudspike.com/chucks-guides-dcs-a-10c-warthog/ PART 8 - Understanding HOTAS. There you will find the differences between in the HOTAS control logic between the Legacy and Tank Killer version. They are a bit different, change some things but after learning the Legacy A-10 hotas controls you will be able to see that kind of differences those are and what is most important, you can decide if the new logic suits you or not. 3. For more in depth and hands on tutorial, also about the Scorpion HMCS try this: This is basically a series from 0 to Hero, literally. Covers everything nicely about the HOG in separate videos, including the mentioned helmet mounted display. Its episode 5. 4. Or if you are not interested in seeing the difference between those two, you can get the Tank Killer immedietly and learn it from the beggining, without seeing what is the difference. But since you own the legacy A10C, and you are thinking about the upgrade, i think it was worth mentioning that there are differences in the Hotas controls. I hope this will help. silverdevil Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 i was stationed in germany as an M60A3 crewman during the mid 80s. the A-10As used to practice on the same ranges and we did. one morning during PT we ran by a little airfield on our post, wildflecken, and there was a hole squadron of hawgs lined up nicely ready to go waste something. our post was very close to the the then east german border. so knowing they were around, especially after watching them during live fire exercises, was comforting. A-10C was first module i had. got FC3 and played A-10A. got A-10II on first day and with DCS cash got it for $2.99. even at its current price, the HMD, as @schurem stated, is worth the price of admission. 1 AKA_SilverDevil Join AKA Wardogs Email Address My YouTube “The MIGS came up, the MIGS were aggressive, we tangled, they lost.” - Robin Olds - An American fighter pilot.
