darkman222 Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 I currently run a system with 32 GB Ram and a Ryzen 9 5900x with an RTX 3090. Using a Pimax 8Kx headset. I saw a video from Growling Sidewinder using 128 GB of Ram, holy cow. When I use fps VR I see only about 24 GB being used by DCS on the Caucasus map. So I am wondering if more RAM would be used anyway? I know that programs swap between the HDD and RAM if not enough RAM is available. But when DCS just uses 24 GB of my 32 GB I could assume thats all it needs at the moment? Or am I mistaken here?
speed-of-heat Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 32 for single player is loads, may people say that more is required for multiplayer, but, i dont play MP very often. The pagefile will swap between ram and disk and i would recommend setting it between 32 and 64gb of disk space. darkman222 Posted August 8, 2021 Author Posted August 8, 2021 (edited) The thing is I have those microstutters sometimes. In FPSvr you can see the little yellow spikes on the CPU frame time graph. I once had accidentally set the page file on my secondary physical HDD with just 16 GB RAM back then. That was an awful ride until I realized. Now the page file is on a SSD drive. But I wonder if DCS just fills up the RAM completely then starting to swap or if it keeps a headroom and still swaps. So having "just" 24 GB of RAM utilized is no indication of being enough then. speed-of-heat Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 (edited) no its fine the stutters is something else Edited August 8, 2021 by speed-of-heat 1 SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat
speed-of-heat Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 If I had to guess you have some background app , that is causing it, for me it was my LED software. darkman222 Posted August 8, 2021 Author Posted August 8, 2021 Well I thought, purchasing 64 GB or even 128 GB of RAM is a lot of money. Ending up DCS still using only 24 GB, because it was already sufficient. Thats why I was asking.
speed-of-heat Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 I "only" have 32Gb i have very solid performance. if you are seeing regular cpu "spikes of activity" then check background tasks/apps on your PC.. .examine task manager at without DCS running and see whats going on .... but some hardware (win wing/DCS BIOS) can cause issues as well from their software, as can software like tac view SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat
bomber Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 Just my experience. Took a punt on extra 32gb up to 64gb and found in multiplayer it does improve things for me, smoother less slowdowns. Glad I bought it as I was prepared for negligible improvement or none ! 10700k at 5ghz, 2080 super [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] This must be reality, no sim can have this many bugs! 13700kf, 4090, 64gb. HP g2.
joseridingclub Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 (edited) I have a 5800x system 6800 reference GPU. 32 gb ram 2 nvme ssd's. Win 10 on fist NVME DCS on second how would you set the pagefiles? any changes to the second drive? what would you set the pagefile of the first drive to? I have tried 8/16/32. I have also tried setting a pagefile on the second nvme. I just found this Edited August 9, 2021 by joseridingclub errors
01G8R Posted August 11, 2021 Posted August 11, 2021 My system was using between 28 to 30 GB of RAM running DCS. I upgraded from 32 GB to 64 GB. No other changes and now I'm seeing 34 to 36 GB of RAM usage while running DCS. I assume some of the RAM is being kept free and now that I have more available the system can use it. 1
javelina1 Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 I sorta went ape sh**. I have 64GB's of RAM, and 3x NVMe's. One NVMe for the O/S, one for the flight sims, and one for the pagefile. I keep the pagefile at 2x of the physical RAM. dburne Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Hmm perhaps I should consider upping my ram from 32 to 64 GB. A2597 Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Shoot, I just recently upgraded to 32GB, and I'm using all four slots. (4x8GB)
darkman222 Posted August 15, 2021 Author Posted August 15, 2021 Exactly. Same for me. But how much RAM do you have? Because if you have "just" 32 GB like me I would expect DCS to do the same on your machine. But like @0g1r says, it seems to make more use of RAM if available
