[4YA] WWII - Project Overlord - historically accurate DCS 1944 server

Recommended Posts

Only way to solve this probably, the server should be able to delay those data transfer, other solution would be that ED would make replays reliable which i think is low, very low chance to happen.

Object export was turned off this afternoon.

Again, and this goes to everyone reading: if you have concerns about something on the 4YA servers, please come and raise it with us directly. You can PM any of the staff who've posted on this thread or open a support ticket in our Discord server, if you're on Discord.

Encouraging everyone to install and use cheat software, especially when that's your very first response after discovering something's not right, is simply going to get you banned. Responsible, community-minded players don't do that sort of thing. We're committed to maintaining a safe and fun server environment that's free from cheats and malicious software.

4YA OPERATION WW2 CHANGELOG  VERSION 3 RELEASE - 25TH AUGUST 2022

This major update to all of the Project Overlord 4YA WW2 missions brings performance and stability improvements as well as some tweaks to the missions you all know and enjoy.

  • Removal of ingame scoreboard. It's known to be inaccurate - your kills are still visible in our Discord server - and, of course, www.ProjectOverlord.co.uk/stats
  • Performance improvements that should reduce black flickers and random stutters
  • Mission points display on F10 menu - this shows the percentage of points completed in the mission. Points are awarded for successful bomber escorts (more than half of aircraft making it back to England) and completion of ground and anti-shipping tasks. The more targets your side completes, the closer you get to mission victory!
  • Revamped EWRS to cure reliability problems. The script will run every 7 minutes to inform you of the closest two enemy aircraft. More upgrades to EWRS are planned for future releases.
  • Weather changes to introduce more clouds and to bring the Project Overlord experience closer to historically accurate weather data.
  • Display of airfield labels on the F10 map. You can now see at a glance whether an airfield is open or closed and what capabilities it has. (repairs, fuel, bombs, rockets)
  • Allied heavy AAA swapped for German 88mm guns due to over-accuracy of the 3.7" guns

Other updates:

Allied airfields now have water in stock for P-47 rearm/refuel taskings following ED bugfix.

6th July 1944 now includes another historically accurate Allied ground target: strike raid on Evreux airfield, as discovered in 416th Bombardment Group records for that day

Enjoy!

Dear players,

It has been a while since our last WW2 event - so here we present:

**1-Life 1-Plane Event** on the 4YA OPERATION WW2 server!

17th September 2022 at 2000UTC

For this 2-hour long event, each player will get 1 aircraft to fly and fight with until they're shot down or crash. The last pilots standing wins the tournament.
Experience the thrill of flying and fighting in a scenario where survival matters as much as splashing your opponents. Tactical flying and teamwork will be crucial to survival.

If you are interested, please sign-up in the spreadsheet under the link below. The sign-up will close on the 16th September at 2000 UTC.
This event will require a decent balance between the teams to be fun for everyone, so if you would be willing to switch to Axis in case of imbalance, please put a cross in the field "Can fly Axis".

Sign-up: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1omsSrZEZSpP-kP3L2fcgXf5HUk-tQBmWfRYQiuwxeTw/edit#gid=0

4YA PROJECT OVERLORD - VERSION 4 - MAJOR MISSION OVERHAUL

Today the Project Overlord mission development team are proud to unveil our initial Version 4 missions.

These new releases include air-to-air objectives for the first time, overhauled bomber raids making full use of the south and east of the current Normandy map, and - of course - lots of rich historically accurate detail!

The three newest missions are 10th June, 17th June and 24th June. Each includes:

* New air to air patrol zones and road recce as mission objectives
* Moving convoys as search-and-destroy objectives
* More historically accurate bomber raids flying to the farthest reaches of the Normandy map
* Revamped static ground targets in historically accurate strike locations for both sides
* Expanded mission points system: Kills as well as RTBs now count towards the mission points

We have worked hard to bring these new features to the 4YA Project Overlord community. This is a semi-experimental release and some issues might appear: these are the most ambitious large scale multi player DCS WW2 missions ever released on a public server. Please let us know if you encounter any problems.

Over the next few weeks we will be publishing blog posts about the historical background to the new missions and their features, as well as explaining how the coalition points system (now visible on the F10 menu) works.

Please leave suggestions for future updates in the appropriate 4YA channel, and don’t forget to report bugs whenever you spot them.

See you in the virtual skies!

New 4YA Project Overlord server rules, as published earlier this week on the 4YA WWII Discord:

1. Be respectful of others. Excessive bad language or any abusive behaviour is not tolerated here.

2. Respect the military simulation (milsim) ethos. This is not an instant dogfight server. The emphasis here is on teamwork with your side, helping your comrades and completing the mission objectives from the briefing and F10 menu.

3. No intentional team-killing. Learn how to identify aircraft from each side before engaging. Allied aeroplanes normally have invasion stripes on their wings.

4. Use of SRS or ingame text chat is mandatory. Players who connect to the server but fail to acknowledge text or SRS callouts will be returned to spectator at moderators' discretion. SRS is the standard DCS in-game radio addon. It is free and can be downloaded from www.dcssimpleradio.com.

Radio procedure on Project Overlord is informal and easy to pick up by listening. Our players are helpful and welcoming to new users.

5. Remember that 4YA has a WW2 Training Server. It is named "[4YA] TRAINING 24/7 CAUCASUS PVE V2.0 WW2/WWII BETA UK".

If you want to learn about your aeroplane's weapons or flight handling, it is best to start here where unit labels, external views and the F10 map are all fully enabled.

6. Do not disconnect or change slot in combat while being chased. This is very bad manners and spoils the immersion in the game for others. If your pilot is killed count to 10 before changing to a fresh aircraft.

We have created a simple 5 minute survey to help us gauge who flies what WW2 aircraft.

It will also help us develop more exciting missions in future and to grow the server population. You can also tell us what you enjoy in the current Project Overlord missions and what you want to see more of.

The survey is here and will run untik 13th October:

https://forms.gle/4P6SUjvEkSQSkmeX6

We have also published the results of our latest One Life Event: https://projectoverlord.co.uk/project-overlord-4ya-one-life-event-2-results/

Congratulations to players Elmo, B@ron and SRF_Biggs!

Recently we ran a player survey on Project Overlord's Discord to understand who flies what, which side they fly, why they were buying DCS WW2 addons and some other information. Here are the results:

I really like this server and enjoy flying the P51D, BF-109  and the Mosquito. I have one thing , which is really annoying. The Flak (low and high altitude) is way to strong and if you fly straight for 15s you will almost surely be hit by it. Also the AA fire at low level strikes will always hit you with every burst, if you don't change your altitude and/or flight path. That is not very realistic. I know that this is a DCS Issue and you can not modify the parameters in the DCS engine but maybe it would help to turn down the skill level of the low level AA guns and flak units ?

I really enjoy flying the mosquito but it is nearly impossible to do some of the more intense defended strike missions without getting hit and damaged by low and/or high level flak........

flying in a straight line against low AA was a death sentence in real life as well i personally think the AA is fine

I agree that you should not fly straight at low level the whole time and expect not to be hit, but the situation at the moment is different. EVERY shot/burst fired by a maschine gun on e.g. a tank or a truck will hit your airplane if you don't jink all the time. You can't fly straight for 2 seconds or you will get surely hit. That is not realistic at all. The situation concerning medium/ high altitude flak is the same. It is not realistic that you have to jink all the time at over 5000 feet with an airspeed of >300mph. Flak at that time was not that accurate.

This does not reflect my personal experience flying on 4ya. The flak is not that accurate even if you fly straight imo. A slight weaving usually makes sure you wont get hit, even tho an unlucky hit now and then is surely possible.

Long time IL2 player, new to DCS, just discovered PO yesterday.

I read DCS WWII MP was dead, but found nothing farther from the truth, this weekend saw a lot of people on the server.

Compared to IL2, I found navigation more difficult, because of the kind of maps we use to navigate,  which one is your preferred map to navigate?

Don't see too many ground units, like convoys etc, there should be plenty (maybe for performance?) or maybe I am looking in the wrong place?

When server is not populated is there  AI flying?

Thanks for this server, really like it so far, and enjoying DCS WWII a lot, trying to bring my IL2 squad mates here to join, the realism, the map,  FM and DM (minus a few glitches ) are great in DCS, very immersive.

I use the F10 map to prepare for a flight, check the course and objectives.
The objectives will be marked on the map, as well as listed in the briefing for more information.

There are some AI patrols flying when there are only few players online, and AI bomber raids.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it. Most of the mission information is on the website (see my sig block) and in the in-game briefing (default keybind LCtrl+B to view). The F10 map has all the ground targets marked, either as small areas or general locations for search-and-destroy objectives.

Some missions have moving ground convoys that you need to find, ID and attack. Others have random convoys with their rough location given in the briefings. But performance is always a consideration, so we can't blanket the map in units - although with multithreading expected later this year we hope that'll give us more overhead to expand the number and type of units in each mission.

AI does indeed fly when server population is low. There are also AI bomber raids and the occasional ground strike too.

Maps... see the website, under the mission info page you'll find a downloadable JPG of the map marked up with common server slang terms for various locations. Flight planning isn't the easiest, admittedly, but that's a general DCS thing. There is also a historically accurate map as used by the actual WW2 pilots linked further back in this thread.

Hello, first of all i'd like to say a big thank you for you server which become more and more populated the evenings 👍

I have a big trouble: i struggle to find ennemy airplanes. Often i have fly more than an hour and i only see empty skies even when there are 30+ people connected....I fly over blue zones ( capture zone), i read GCI messages but....nithing most of the time. Especially when i take off from England the evening.

The days, less people are connected and despite the fact that i have to take off from french bases i have the same problem and i never find the 4 ennemy planes hidden...somewhere... ( and same thing: i listen GCI, i open my map and check the action zones etc etc)

I am pretty sure i am doing something wrong.

Could you, please, give me advices how to fix this problem?

Thx

@Spirale
Hey there,

So in general since this server strives for realism, finding enemies will be more difficult than on more dogfight-themed servers.

A couple of suggestions:

- Make sure you are actively using SRS to communicate with others. Most engagements you will find because you hear someone calling it out on SRS

- Approach people to fly together. Flying in a flight of two or more is not only much more fun, but also increases your spotting capability a lot.

- Carry out mission objectives instead of just doing CAP. Escorting bomber raids is a good way of getting into a fight, as is doing ground attacks.

Salute

Does this server offer the opportunity for players with Combined Arms and the WWII asset pack to take control of tanks etc to contribute to the ground war?

Visit the Dangerdogz at www.dangerdogz.com. We are a group based on having fun (no command structure, no expectations of attendance, no formal skills required, that is not to say we can not get serious for special events, of which we have many). We play DCS and IL2 GBS. We have two groups one based in North America / Canada and one UK / Europe. Come check us out.
