The comprehensive list of all unmarked and missing aerodromes - Updated 11 March 2023

Made this for another project, thought others might find it useful.

sa100323-2.jpg

What we currently have:
- 26 named aerodromes and FOBs across the map;
- 26 unmarked grass/dirt airstrips on Falklands;

What's missing (compared to the real world -- NOT to Razbam's promises):
- About eight unmarked airstrips and one helipad on Falklands;
- About two "proper" paved aerodromes on mainland;
- Dozens of unmarked airstrips and helipads on mainland (many of them are literally patches of dirt in the middle of nowhere).

Ohhh wow, nice work, thx. I hope only - if Razbam terrain team will take somethng from the list they will work on performance and optimalization before (minimum 50% better) because this list will kill this map on low level flight at current stage 🥲.

Great work! Thanks. I am cross referencing MSFS 2K to see what I can find.

A decent chunk of the grass strips on the islands themselves are there, with 3D objects, they're just unmarked on the map. The grass on said grass strips could do with some work though.

P.S. This topic is not to criticize, but to give others a better understanding of scope and current state of the map.

What are Razbam's plans for airfields though? We don't necessarily get everything on a given map. The Hormuz map is missing some major airfields, which I guess is fine if that was the intention all along, but it means that we can't necessarily tie progress to the percentage of airfields modeled.

Nice, do you have anything like this for the other maps?

Use map mode in the mission editor. It will reveals potentially many dozens of missing airfields depending on the map.

Alternatively I like to use X Plane's airport map:

I'm fairly sure they've said that at least the paved airports will get done. They've already done a load of grass strips on the islands themselves (they just aren't marked on the map).

True, the Caucasus is also missing Marnueli AB, Poti and Queen Tamar/Mestia. The former is the primary airbase for the Georgian Air Force.

I don't think it does for the grass strips on the islands though, you have to look for them manually. I'll do a post showcasing which are present and which aren't.

The best source I've personally come across is this (credit for finding it though goes to @SlipHavoc).

To add to the OP, here are the list of aerodromes on islands themselves.

Apart from Port Stanley, RAF Mount Leastant and San Carlos FOB, they're all grass/dirt strips, which look to have no/next to no services.

Key:

  • Green: Fully/nearly completed with 3D objects (though bear in mind that some do have inaccuracies, all of the grass strips need the grass tweaked as well as being marked on the map).
  • Orange: mostly complete, but a fair bit missing.
  • Red: only a satellite texture (usually you can see the white runway edge markings) or otherwise unusable.
  • Bold: Airports/airbases with paved runways

I'll be including the camera position, if you want to use it, copy the camera position and press whatever you've got set as you "Load camera position from clipboard" bind (default is RAlt + RCtrl + .)

East Falkland:

  • Bleaker Island (north): -camera 32.757283 0.854043 20.613596 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • Bleaker Island (south) (there are alignment issues with one of the runways though): -camera 30.400033 1.108067 21.123494 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000 (this is supposedly unusable IRL - thanks Minsky).
  • Douglas Station (missing a runway): -camera 113.238410 0.939794 35.650168 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • George Island (though runway texture needs improvement IMO - it's nearly invisible): -camera 11.893639 0.537579 -40.272161 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • Goose Green: -camera 72.605148 0.998672 11.223588 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • Lively Island: -camera 53.888080 0.744607 47.470172 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000

  • Port San Carlos (depicted as San Carlos FOB): -camera 107.888664 0.949092 8.574744 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000

  • RAF Mount Pleasant: -camera 73.063617 3.482384 47.563840 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • Salvador: -camera 116.100012 0.612966 51.818779 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • Sea Lion (east) (though buildings are inaccurate): -camera 4.809958 1.151060 6.384232 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • Sea Lion (west): -camera 3.265020 1.069429 3.170828 -cameradir -0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000

West Falkland:

  • Albermarle (just missing a building): -camera 25.660454 0.671046 -93.861055 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000

  • Dunbar (pretty much invisible, but can be seen in online maps - looks to be just a grass strip with no structures or objects): -camera 113.343999 1.179578 -90.281776 -cameradir -0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000

  • Fox Bay Helipad (there are 3D objects here, but there's a load of rubble on the helipad, making it unusable. It's also not very accurate): -camera 55.613131 0.283268 -63.042398 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000

  • Keppel Island (next to invisible in DCS, but is visible in Google Earth, AFAIK this strip is abandoned IRL): -camera 125.822730 0.483230 -57.151736 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000

  • Port Stephens (just missing a building): -camera 36.968980 1.212508 -116.229746 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000

  • Saunders Island (only the large dirt runway is present, in Google Earth it looks like there's at least 1-2 more runways): -camera 119.009359 1.160907 -67.458234 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • Shallow Harbour: -camera 75.639723 0.689464 -96.258117 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • Spring Point (just missing 1-2 buildings): -camera 67.650227 1.027226 -90.233844 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • Weddel Island: -camera 61.063631 0.819988 -121.176082 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000
  • Westpoint Island: -camera 120.750535 0.476927 -108.923277 -cameradir 0.000000 -1.000000 0.000000

Note that the grass probably needs tweaking for the majority of grass strips (it's definitely on the long side compared to grass strips on other maps). In most cases they're marked with small white rocks, but said rocks disappear at <1 km away and given the textures and in some cases, lack of vegetation, some of them are incredibly difficult to spot.

To summarise 26/38, aerodomes (~68%) on the islands are present in a usable state, with the remainder either not present at all or not usable.

I'm assuming you're using Google Maps/Earth?

Their imagery of Falklands seem to be really outdated and inferior to Esri/Bing/Apple that all have Bleaker clearly visible.

Yeah, I just looked on zoom.earth and spotted it straight away.

On Bing I can even see another airstrip to the north.

EDIT: Actually, could it be that the southern airstrip, closer to the settlement is abandoned IRL?

The southern strip at Lafonia Point (which we have in DCS) is unnamed/abandoned. And the norther strip at Gull Point (which we don't have) is the actual Bleaker Island Airfield.

  • 4 weeks later...

So Pto. Natales was not announced and we are missing Santa Cruz as per announced.

"New - Added Airfield Aeropuerto de Santa Cruz
New - Added Airfield Aeropuerto Guardiamarina Zanartu(Puerto Williams)
New - Added Aerodromo Guardiamarina Zanartu (Puerto Williams)
New - El Calafate"

Cool grate variety so far...

Personally hoping Santa Cruz, Luis Piedra Buena and O´higgins are next.
