Did anyone ever tried this with the Warthog slew "nipple"?

First of all, I know there are slew upgrades available for the Warthog throttle, but one has to choose where to spend money on. I still have so many upgrades in my mind (new GPU, fssb stick, Winwing F-16 throttle, new F-15E module, just to mame a few...) and unfortunately I can only spend my money only once 

 

Anyways, did anyone ever try to drill a tiny hole in the top of the oem Warthog nipple. I was thinking of doing this and then screw on a small "thumb" stick using a tiny screw. I can imagine a larger surface would already improve the slew stick (as the main issue is the lack of "grip" on the small nipple)

(Don't look at all the dust please, the close up photo makes it worse than it actually is )

 

Any ideas/advice/reasons why I shouldn't try this?

Anyone know how long/deep the oem nipple is? (How deep would I be able to drill without damaging any wiring?)

I get the money thing, but honestly wait a little longer for your next update beyond it and spend the money on the DeltaSim upgrade for the TDC.  MASSIVE overall improvement, and IIRC the ones he's sending now have a higher resolution (or maybe it's just the firmware now recognizes a higher resolution -- search it on the forum, I think his firmware update might work on the stock nipple so worth doing even if you stick with that ).

I don't think longer "lever" is going to help you. Because.... it's not a gimbal type mechanism under there. 

Under there, it's an AMS package Hall sensor module, which has the mechanism similar to the PSP joystick... it slides in both X and Y directions on a flat plane. The AMS Hall sensors senses displacement, not rotational angle. Since it's a slide mechanism, there is no such thing as a lever, hence no such thing as a "longer" lever to increase the rθ arc length.

The longer "stem" just increase the torque load and gains you nothing else other than the torque induced friction.

It’s not the size, whether you are talking about a nob or a stick…. *snigger*
 

Well, give it a try. Just don’t drill more than 3mm.

I suck some course abrasive on it. I got a sheet of 80 grit and used a hole punch. I used the small circle that was cut out and stuck it on with superglue. Not as good as Deltasim mod but an improvement.

In case you didn't know. TM finally updated the slew switch on the new Warthogs. I have one and it looks like the delta mod.

Mileage varies .... I ended up getting the mod and have never looked back. I'd tried to improve the old part but was never happy.

I passed on a some MaccyD meals electing for a simply hamburger instead and I had the deltamod price saved in short order!  It's been far far more rewarding than the bigmacs could ever have been!

 

Interesting to read the newer TM WHs have a different design for the slew!

Did you buy one separately, or an entire throttle?

I wonder what it'll cost from TM if it can be bought separately. Buying the Deltasim slew from here (The Netherlands) is over €60,- (and that is excl international shipping costs). A bit steep imho.

I bought the whole Warthog. I read someone say TM wants $70 for the switch but I don't know if that's accurate. Seems kind of high but i've never bought any parts from TM. I'd contact them and see what they say.

Considering that is ~1/3 of a complete TM Warthog throttle, I agree, if true, that'd be kinda absurd indeed..

Although I'm sure Deltasim delivers a great product, I find that to be a rather expensive mod for a ~€240 throttle (reading that so many people purchased this mod, I suppose I'm alone in this opinion)

 

Don't get me wrong, I'm not moaning about slew mod pricing, it is what it is. I just wondered if increased "nipple grip" would increase fingertip slew control and with that create a better experience.

Well, I got Delta's first version of his mod (Force Sensing). Let's say compared to the first version the 56£ was pretty cheap. But both are well worth it. Top quality and a nice QOL improvement for any Thrustmaster Throttle. The upgraded Firmware with higher polling frequency is a great free upgrade coming from delta as well.

I'll just say that I've used the Warthog for a year, and basically always struggled with the TGP in the F-18.

I got the Delta Slew Upgrade, and immediately the TGP became usable. Like..no issues, it just worked. Even the hud reticle became usable.

Yeah. I felt relieved, but I also just kept thinking why I tortured myself for years with that horrible mouse nipple. They ship from UK so with taxes it was something between 80-90€ when shipped to Finland, but still worth every penny.

Thanks for this thread... lots of great solutions from low cost to higher cost.  I went with the Delta Simulations stick replacement ($55) and it is worth every cent! It was easy to install and has a great range of motion so now I can slew with precision.

The Deltasim upgrade is definitely worth it. On WWII birds with hand brakes... Spit, Mossie, La-5, I bind the Slew switch to the brake axis and give it a curve of 50, and Saturation of 50.. and DZ of 08... results may vary....but it's easy to develop muscle memory with it. Up/down brakes, L/R zoom.
