Reusenfisch Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 Pilot’s! I want to upgrade my 3070. Budget will allow a used 3090 or a 4070ti. I play with a G2 in VR. System contains a i9 11900 and a M2., 32GB Any thoughts ? thanks
skywalker22 Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 Seriously, 4080 at least, everything less it's no point.
speed-of-heat Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 if that's your budget; a 3090 will have more available RAM, and that can be a significant factor, over the raw performance advantage of the 4070ti, i haven't tested the 4070ti, but i got very good perfromance out of my old 3090 SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat
Reusenfisch Posted February 5, 2023 Author Posted February 5, 2023 Like I said the 4080 is out of reach

Reusenfisch Posted February 6, 2023 Author Posted February 6, 2023 (edited) Unfortunately I am not located in the US. Here in Germany the price is around 1450€ that is 1566 US $ . If I would import it from the US that would be 1250 plus 30% of tax and administration fee. Additionally it will be kind of difficult regarding warranty if it breaks... WipeUout Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Difficult decision. I would tend to go with the 4070ti because of the new architecture and DLSS 3.0 support. Because it is faster than a 3090. Because its power draw is much less than the 3090 and depending on the power of your PSU, it might be necessary to upgrade it as well. Because used hardware has higher risk of defect, abuse or plain scam. There is also the option to wait and save a little more to get that 4080 or even the 4090 which will give you incredible performance for years to come. The G2 has a high resolution and being able to enjoy it to its full potential takes a lot of GPU power. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9800X3D, RTX 4090, 96GB DDR 5, MSI Tomahawk 870E, Crucial 2TB x 2, TM WARTHOG COMBO + PENDULAR RUDDER PEDALS, THE AMAZING PIMAX 8K X, Sony 5.1 Spks+SubW | DCS, A-10C_II, AH-64D, F-14/15E/16/18, F-86F, AV-8B, M-2000C, SA342, Huey, Spitfire, FC3.
Dragon1-1 Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Well, where I live, a used 3090 is about 3/4th the price of a 4070ti. Never had an issue with scams, and if you buy through a reputable service, you're protected from them (if there's a defect and the seller said there isn't, you can get your money back). Customer protection is quite strong in Europe. You also get twice the VRAM with a 3090, even if the GPU itself is faster on the 4070ti. As for DLSS 3.0, it's the same as 2.5 or so, but with frame generation added. Whether that single feature is worth the added cost is an open question, but for DCS it definitely isn't, since DCS will have DLSS 2.0 only.
Bullant Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 My 3090 does pretty damn good with the G2. I mean I am currently looking at upgrading to a 4090, but I'm crazy like that. I can get 50fps with pretty damn good settings in single player, so honestly the 3090 + OpenXR is a very nice combination. edmuss Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 (edited) Until some reliable testing is done with the 4070ti in DCS VR I would go 3090 or 3080ti over 4070ti unless you're set on utilising DLSS3 which VR doesn't use. I can pull 60-100 fps with my setup with high/medium settings. Reusenfisch Posted February 6, 2023 Author Posted February 6, 2023 Can I throw the Rx 7900 xtx into the mix? It has lots of VRAM… so what are the opinions?
speed-of-heat Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 people have very mixed experiences of AMD cards and VR, mostly this seems to be down to driver maturity. In the UK that is a 1200GBP card ... I can get a 4080 founders edition for that price SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat

Digitalvole Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 3090 was great but the 4090 is something else. Is saving a bit longer an option? The 4090 is possibly the last card you’d need for some time. 1

The headsets like Pico 4 and Quest 2, on the other hand, should not have this bug. The performance of the 7900XT(X) should still be below what is to be expected, but significantly better than is generally currently presented in the discussions. Unfortunately we all have this problem. I'm thinking about getting a 7900XT to try out in the next few weeks. Otherwise I only have a used 3090 or a new 4070ti. Neither of which makes you happy. 3090 used, for such expensive hardware is not a good plan (For me). 4070TI only has 12GB. I think I'll test a 7900XT and then see. speed-of-heat Posted March 6, 2023 Posted March 6, 2023 I mean i have no way of proving that mitigation works (e.g. that an AMD card works well in VR without a display port connection)... I had a 3090 and it was a good card. The 4070ti has great raw perf and less memory which we know that DCS uses, as a compromise i can see both working. as I said the 7900xtx is about 1200 in the UK and for that I got a founder's edition 4090 ... by all means test away , and i hope it works out for you SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat
KCOOL Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 (edited) What if multithreading / DLSS gives us a good pump in fps in the next months? Am I too optimistic? Edited March 7, 2023 by KCOOL
diego999 Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 Don't forget to consider the memory bus on the 4070ti is on the low end of the spectrum: 192 bits. 3090 has double of that: 384bits. For comparison, the 3070 has 256. If this is a limiting factor on DCS VR, I don't know. But I think it's something to have in mind.
Mobius_cz Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 Hey guys i will share my experience I have RTX 3070 and Quest 2. I had two models in my mind to choose from. AMD Sapphire RX 7900 XTX Nitro + or Nvidia Gigabyte RTX 4080 Gaming OC. I really did some research with those cards and find out that AMD might have problems with VR but i gave it a try and bought AMD card. Raw performance in 2D in 1440p was excelent. My setup is with Ryzen 9 5900X and with this card i had power consuption (from the wall) at 630W during 3D Mark test. Everything was superb until i turned on my Quest 2....Don't get me wrong this card is still a beast and for non VR users it is a blast really. In DCS i had 90FPS in solo A10C free flight with MSAA 2X, textures on HIGH and Quest resolution in PC app bumped up to 5408x2736. And there are two reasons why i am sending this GPU back to the store. 1. Via Air link i had noticeable distortion on right lens. It was like when you try to see anything through glass bottle full of water. The problem disappeared while using cable link Quest to PC. I can use cable with DCS with no problem but for the other games it is issue because i don't have enough space around PC for normal VR stuff and i am payingVR games maybe 5 meters from PC. I tried to uninstall whole Oculus App and it helped..for the first Air link connect and then i had my fish eye back. My guess.. it is not AMD fault but somewhere between AMD and Meta because reinstall worked without touching of AMD settings at all. 2. And the second reason.. i don't know why but text and textures looked sharper with RTX (just my opinion form direct compare). Maybe coding/decoding, different compression? This might be just bad setting somewhere so bear with me And probably it is connect only to Quest 2 because no direct HDMI or Display port connection. If you like AMD products give it a try. But be prepared to encouter some difficulties with VR, i hope those issues will be solved in the near future but i need something what works for me right now Cheers [sIGPIC]http://dcs-uvp.cz/images/userbars/uvp_bars_mic.gif[/sIGPIC]
