Maj.Ballz Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 In the upcoming patch, I believe the "Watch EKRAN" audible warning should be changed to "Check EKRAN" as this is more inline with checking a system warning rather than "Watch" it. Anyone else feel this more appropriate? Or rename the whole thing to Svetlana and just keep "Watch Svetlana" all the time. 1

Namenlos Ein Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 In Russian «Смотри ЭКРАН» exactly means «Watch EKRAN». «Check EKRAN» translates «Проверь ЭКРАН» and "Rita" (or "Betty") don't tell that words.
LoyalNine Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Does not bother me I guess what it says as long as I know where to look... I will tell you a guy I fly online with nightly (I won't tell you his name out of fear of making him feel foolish). But anyways FEDEX who hangs out at the KA50.com server thought that bitching betty was telling him to "WatchDaGround". Poor guy kept trying to figure out why he needed to strech his neck to find out what was going on onthe ground around him. I wonder if he has figured it out yet... Is it that easy? The sticky about the handbook-errata is full of literal translations from Russian, that are at least misleading in English. Maj.Ballz Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 (edited) In Russian «Смотри ЭКРАН» exactly means «Watch EKRAN». «Check EKRAN» translates «Проверь ЭКРАН» and "Rita" (or "Betty") don't tell that words. My point is not the literal translation which sometimes is not suitable, but a realistic cockpit interactive that serves the simulation best. Checking a system is what we're doing, not staring at it or watching it. Edited February 18, 2009 by Maj.Ballz
okolovos oko Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I renamed into "watch under Svetlana's skirt"
Feuerfalke Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Well, may be. Is the "Look at EKRAN" misleading too? Misleading and odd English. But the initial suggestion was "Check EKRAN" and this hits the nail on the head. I wonder if he has figured it out yet... 'Check' does make more sense to me. But it is also the correct use of 'Watch'. So.. horses for courses. What I'd like to know is, if its so important the Check or Watch it.. can't it be a bit clearer or larger. Rhino4 Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Realistic: Literal translation. Unrealistic: Putting what we want there instead of what really is there, ie: "check" instead of "watch"... 'Nuff said.

Boberro Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 (edited) That is simply not true. When you translate between languages you don't just do a word for word literal translation. That is unrealistic... nuff said :P Agree. One word can have many translations. Example translating from English WATCH into Polish it can be replaced either PATRZ or SPÓJRZ, OBSERWUJ, CZUWAJ ect many dozen words. Some mentioned words are closer to strickly translating, ones are futher, but they can be asigned too. However here I would prefer oryginal (watch) strickly from Rus-Eng. :) Edited February 18, 2009 by Boberro Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... CE_Mikemonster Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I suppose if you want 100% realism you have to play it in Russian, everything else is merely a subjective translation. Check or watch, no big deal. I have a hunch if it'd been made 'Check Ekran' somebody would have said 'thats not realistic though!', hence why it's 'Watch Ekran' lol Having given it a thought i'd prefer check, but no huge deal for me! Esac_mirmidon Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 What i reall want is a post mission text file about EKRAN flight document in a temp folder or something like that to be able to read it in a debriefing and check it for errors, breakdowns, etc. More important than the translation of a word. Namenlos Ein Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 What if it was a simulator of Chinese WZ-10 attack helicopter? For full realism any user must learn Chinese? In some situations its critical to react immediately after such warnings.
Maj.Ballz Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 In any aviation environment, reviewing a system is known as a Check, i.e. Checklist, Flight Control Check,etc... its part of the aviation dialogue To watch something as defined in Webster's Dictionary: a: to be attentive or vigilant Whereas to Check something is according to Webster's : standard for testing and evaluation With EKRAN, arent we evaluating the alert just generated and not a prolonged attentiveness to it ( makes it seem like a much longer evaluation )
CE_Mikemonster Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I suppose the irony is that the only people who KNOW it should be 'Watch Ekran' already speak Russian. Funny how it works, lol. Too many cowboys. Not enough indians. GO APE SH*T
