mrbinkels
Hello folks, Doing a complete upgrade specifically for BS (Don't tell my wife, I told here it was for her benefit) So this is what I bought: GIGABYTE GA-MA790FXT-UD5P AMD|PH II X3 720 BK AM3 2.8G Sapphire 4870 X2 8 gigs of DDR3 CORSAIR|CMPSU-650TX 650W PS Vista 64 bit And of course the other odds and ends. Anyway curious to see if the new AMD cpu can run BS, I would imagine, after reading around, the cpu should do around 3.3g fairly easy. Curious what you guys think. Fairly inexpensive upgrade as well (relatively that is) Sam Edited March 3, 2009 by mrbinkels AMD 965BE at 3.8 Ghz Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P Crossfire XFX 5870XXX 8 gigs of Crucial DDR3 Corsair 850HX Windows

mrbinkels
Just a quick update. I have the case together and installed BS first. I have all settings on the 4870 x2 card set at max with a max res of 1920x1200. I also have all settings in BS maxed and I get between 30-50 fps on 9.2 drivers. No problems with them at all so far. That damn 4870 x2 is huge! I really didn't get a sense on how big and heavy it was until I picked it up. The AMD X3 720 2.8 ghz cpu is running at 3.6ghz. I still need to do prime testing. I couldn't get the fourth core enabled on mine but I'm ok with it. Deveous
Are you using the stock AMD cooler to achieve those speeds or an aftermarket cooler. Well I am about to load up BS on my new rig... Just got the Phenom 2 x3 720 as well... I was using the stock cooler @ 3.6ghz and it was running a little hot, now I have a pretty copper one except it sits over the ram banks and interfered with the heat sinks on the ram. I had to bend them almost 90 degrees(hope this won't be an issue). Also got a solid state drive and was so impressed with it I purchased a second so I can raid them and have twice the speed! Should have the second one by Tuesday! This new cpu is pretty sweet for such a budget buy. I have seriously spent 5+ hours playing with overclocking. So far the fastest almost stable clock has been 3.737gHz on air cooling. I have it bumped down to 3.6 because temp levels were pretty damn hot (73-76C) and that worried me. On the otherhand if I burn the CPU I will just go pick up another @ 145 I won't cry too much.

Deveous
Are you changing the the cpu clock,FSB or both. Also what voltages are you running? Was messing with the bus at first, but couldn't get the machine stable. Anyway, I am currently sticking with 3.6ghz. Core Multiplyer is 18x 200 fsb Volts in AMD Over Drive read out in order 1.4875 1.4750 2.1 1.480 1.3 1.25 If I stress the machine in Prime-95 with the cpu max power/heat my CPU core reaches 68-70C... Still a little hot, but from what I have read this chip can opperate @ 72C. The only time I get it this hot is with Prime-95 and games usually only bring it to 65ish +/-2 Edited March 11, 2009 by Deveous Added Prime info

TucksonSonny
I realy liked this video on the world record made by the 940 AMD PII 6.5Gh. And run to 3.8-4Gh on air. CAT_101st
I know the I7 is still way better than the AMD PII. But I just cant justfy the cost compaired to the AMD. Got mine for $219. Whats the I7 at $700-$1000. I would much rather buy 2 more video cards than 1 cpu. For me and many others cost comes first.
