Heavy Rain is truely horrifying now (2.9.6)

I wouldn't know what it's like in a fighters bubble canopy without rain removal, but I've had to go around in real life in heavy rain WITH WIPERS on high (in a Boeing 737-800) because the wipers simply couldn't clear the torrent of water that is coming in, and the runway lights turn into a giant blurry mess that you can't use to land. It was like trying to land with a fire hose directed at the windscreen.

But really, no idea how that translates onto a bubble canopy. Do they have rain repellent, or bleed air rain removal or something? I confess to complete ignorance on what (if anything) fighters actually do! I have to say, that video looks realistic to me (again, zero real life fighter experience!)

Just experienced the new effect in the sim for the first time in the warbirds. Woof.

I think it needs another look. It's not so bad when stationary and is pretty true to life, but as soon as you start to pick up speed it should start clearing off with the faster slip stream pretty quick.

The effect we have now makes it look like the water has the viscosity of an oil, and even if you're flying over 300 knots it slowly moves back over the windscreen like it's molasses. On canopies with multiple sections the direction of the water flow doesn't line up either, and it will often be moving at what looks like 90 degrees opposed to the portion of the canopy on the other side of a frame.

I think there needs to be way more variation in speed of the flow over the canopy, with the warping effect clearing off as the aircraft speeds up, trading off the shader warping effect for more impact effects. Unless it's a torrential downpour, even getting up to speed on the runway for takeoff should clear off the majority of it, with the water streaking slowing and collecting around canopy edges on the sides where the local airflow may stagnate a bit.

The effect we have now would be more appropriate for catastrophic damage spraying engine oil all over the windscreen.

Needs a revision pretty badly.

Rain shouldn't be that bad, especially at night will have to look on mine later see how bad it is. In real life the canopy is treated with chemical rain repellant, more potent version of RainX that you can buy for a car so it should be beading up, not pouring down the window like your at home watching a thunderstorm out the window. That's effective at low speed and higher speeds it literally just gets pushed off.

Only thing that really irritates me with the rain in DCS is in helicopters, I'm sat in heavy rain in my Huey and the rain is large raindrops and the wipers do nothing, just seem to float over it and the raindrops are still there.

I seen a YouTube vid a long time ago, of a Growler section departure from Fallon, filmed during a rainstorm from the back seat.

If I can find it, I'll post a link. It's been quite a while since I seen it, but if I am recalling it correctly, I want to say that while the pair sat on the runway numbers, the rain on the canopy would bead briefly, then fall straight down in a very narrow and beaded stream. When the takeoff roll began, the beading rain would slowly transition from straight down to a slow front to back motion, and by the time v1 was achieved, you could barely notice it was raining at all, aside from the spray being kicked up by the wheels on the leads -2 up until airborne. After that the rain was nearly imperceptible, when looking out the sides of the canopy. Windscreen may be a different story... 

 

I'm about to begin my work shift for the day, but I'll do my best to find the video ASAP.

Comparing apples with apples though - it's not actually raining in the first & third of those videos though - it's just been raining (drops on the canopy, but none of them moving/running & no new ones forming), & even in the one that it is raining, it's not raining hard - look at the deck crew & how there's no rain in the air between the camera & them, and they're not dripping water, just turning away from the wind.

It does. Look at your wings. The rain effects are hard to notice unless you have some kind of near "object" to see the distortion, like your wings, a cloud, etc. Note raindrop distortion on leading edge, missiles, nose, horizon. In video you can see individual drops moving. Visibility/shape depends on airspeed.

Rain in the Viper I can concur with @Nealiusas well. I have an older mission I downloaded from the user section, called 'Tanker Escort', created by someone named "d0ppler". Pretty cool mission. When the Viper is at v1 or faster, the rain was visible along the lower sides of the canopy, and distorts the shapes of the wings and weapons, in what I would have to call a "ribbon" effect.

I have a suspicion that canopy shape affects the visibility as well. The Tomcat with it's thick front canopy glass likes to cause raindrops to pool while at landing speeds, which makes rainy carrier traps a bit more nerve-racking than usual.

I am working on each of individual plane. I ran a test with F/A-18C. During take off, there were no water trail, but on other occasion, I can see the trails, especially at 4 and 8 o'clock.

For chopter, none of the wipers work -- Ka-50III (still) does not even have any raindrops on the canopy!

OH-6A and UH-60L, however, have different displays, but essentially, the wiper on the latter does not work. I need to look at the Apache for it worked before.

What about Hind?
