This is a short demonstration of a Dynamic ATC system for Nellis AFB.

it is still WIP but all of the core functionality is in place and it does work very well.

It is built using the MOOSE framework and full credit to the MOOSE team for their hard work, without it none of this would be possible.

The Video's a little rough as its my first attempt at recording and editing videos.

THIS IS AWESOME!!!! great work.  I have a few notes (for reference I'm a 23 year tower and radar controller at both civilian and military airfields in the US).

->The ATIS information we don't say QFE we just say "Altimeter Two Niner Niner Two"  All altitudes are read as single numbers ie One Four Thousand for 14,000.

->Runway taxi instruction phraseology is "Runway ## taxi via taxiway X X X [hold short or cross runway if needed]."  the pilot will hold short of the runway themselves.  also only when giving a progressive taxi instruction would you use turn left Charlie right alpha or something similar.  it takes a lot of time to say those words, and in our world seconds count, so the less we have to say the better.

->Single pilot fighter aircraft takeoff clearance is: "c/s runway XX, wind XXX/XX, change to departure, cleared for takeoff" (personally I say change to departure after the takeoff clearance but that's what the book says).

-> In the US Flight Levels don't begin until FL180, below that its One Two Thousand One Seven Thousand, Two Thousand Five Hundred, etc.

-> When giving a radar vector and not using turn left/ turn right heading, say "fly heading"

It looks like some of these things were corrected later in the video when you were inbound, such as fly heading and removing the QFE and QNH phraseology.

-> The overhead sequence from tower should be "report initial (3-5 nm from runway), then give break instructions ie left/right break, at the approach end, mid-field, departure end, etc.  for sequencing in the pattern.

-> The runway exit instructions (since it seems to know where you're parking) are "Turn left/right next taxiway, at the end, or [taxiway name].

I wrote these notes as I watched the video.  again this is great work, just some things that would make it a bit more polished.

Ref:  7710.65AA Air Traffic Control Handbook (used by both US Military and Civilian ATC).  The tower section is Chapter 3, Radar is under Chapters 4 and 5.

@USSInchon Wow!

That is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.

My goal is to make the ATC as authentic as possible so your feedback is invaluable.

Their is a lot to unpack here and I have many questions. I sent you a PM if you've got the time and are able to help.

Thank you so much!

This looks promising. Thank you for your work, keep up.

I´m eager to try the dynamic ATC.

About carrier ops: "The younger pilots are still quite capable of holding their heads forward against the forces. The older ones have been doing this too long and know better; sore necks make for poor sleep.'

We really should have some ATC. Well done for having a go at it Avalanche, great feedback from USSInchon, should help no end.

It’s pretty fundamental for a flight sim. Keep at it. 🙂

you're welcome, another good resource to use, to hear how US ATC works day-to-day is liveatc.net there are a few military sites on there as well, but its mostly civil aviation.

This is great!
When you think yo can released it?
Also, how were you recording that vr flight?

The ATC is built into a Dynamic Campaign that ties together a number of different projects. Its Called USAF Weapons School. I try and think of it more as a tech demo than a campaign. I still need to make demonstration videos for some of the other Projects.

Some of the other systems include:

RangeControl/Awacs

Showtime  - manages Adversary aircraft and a2a engagements

AI_Wingman - New AI wingmen. By far the most complex system in the campaign.

AI_Jtac - replaces the in game Jtac and adds a lot more functionality.

Simulated HAVEQUICK system - Secure comms

To record in VR I set the DCS system resolution to 2560 x 1440 and then used OBS to record the DCS mirror.

ATC system needs a serious overhaul.  too bad ED has to rely on these great mods to make it actually work.

looking forward to trying this when released... now all you have to do is finish it for ALL the airports in the game :D

I agree with USSInchon’s comments. You don’t use the word “clear” or “cleared” unless it is for landing or take-off clearance.
This could be a real game changer. Love it.

I can understand why ED haven't updated the ATC yet. it will be a massive undertaking. ED have said they will need to make 3 ATC systems, Western modern, Eastern modern and WW2.

Perhaps we'll see some progress once SC is finished.

USSInchons feedback was excellent. I have changed almost all the dialogue since posting the video. I don't think its 100% accurate yet, but it will get there.

Check out this excellent video from Cabi~599 and DCS Hacks.

Outlines the Correct procedures for a USAF Overhead pattern. Your going to need it for the AI_ATC.

Be sure to give it a like and subscribe. The channel has some incredible content on real world procedures.

does that mean it's coming soon? 😃

I'll let you know when the goal post stops moving.

In the meantime I think a development update is past due.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE:

The AI_ATC was originally conceived as an emersion tool for single player missions that could provide some useful instruction.

Since posting the video back in August, It has evolved into a study level ATC simulator that's multiplayer capable. "STUDY" being the key word there. Treat it like a new module you have to study and practise to get the most out of it.

I think it will be a great tool for virtual pilots to practise realistic ATC procedures and Phraseology. The AI_ATC system is completely modular so it can be added to any mission on the NTTR map, allowing people to design their own missions around it.

I have had the extremely good fortune of collaborating with some incredible people. They have been instrumental in driving the project in the right direction.

So when is it going to be released? I would say its ~ 85% complete, although I'm sure I'll keep finding new features to add along the way. Hoping to put a showcase video out soon.

That is what we all waited for!!!!!!
I will do a profile for foxvox. That is much more capable instead of voice attack and its for free.

This is such a much-needed addition to DCS to improve the immersion. Having flown on a multiplayer servers with human ATC, single player environment just seems lacking without the additional communication.

This is part one of a series of tutorial video's for AI_ATC.

Think of making radio calls like a muscle you can train. It took me a while, but with practise you can make accurate radio calls quickly and confidently.

A huge thankyou to Cabi~599 for the work he's put into this.
