Why would someone buy this...

http://www.alphasim3.com/store/product_info.php?currency=USD&products_id=255&osCsid=b8ad0aa2afc05a36769f09aed72467eb

... and not just spend the same amount of money on Black Shark? They're both $40.

I mean, just look at these screenshots.

Is it terrible? No. It actually doesn't look all that bad as far as FSX goes. It's just that everything seems to be such lower fidelity than DCS:BS, for the same price. The model is blocky, the textures rough. The cockpit has everything in the right place, but their spacing is "off" (just look at the targeting panel). The HUD is a joke.

Plus, in BS, you get, I don't know... an actual world and battlefield to fight in... working weapons... working datalink system... fully operational systems beyond "the MFD accurately represents the Ka-50's moving map system"....and so much more. You know, a real simulation, as opposed to a half-baked facsimile of a helicopter.

Just thought it was funny.

Things like bad weather over the target area are one of the options you can get while in the FS-10 cockpit...

My mission is to fly, fight, and win. o-:|:-o What I do is sometimes get a tin of soup, heat it up, poach an egg in it, serve that with a pork pie sausage roll.

But would you have a target area in FSX? :P

My point is this: I fly flight sims in order to experience an aircraft in its natural habitat. I'll fly a Cessna when I want to take a pleasure flight from Miami down to Key West. I'll fly a 747 when I want to simulate an airline flight from New York to Frankfurt. I'll fly a Beechcraft Baron when I want to play light cargo hauler and dodge thunderstorms trying to deliver my freight.

I'll buy FSX addons that can't do what the stock airplanes will do. I bought the Embraer 170/190 so that I could have the fully functional cockpit systems and FMS. I bought the Flight 1 Cessna so that I have more realistic flight model and performance. Now, each of those aircraft is a transport. It gets you from point A to point B - that's its purpose.

The Black Shark is a combat aircraft. Why would I buy a KA-50 for FSX if the only thing I can do with it is takeoff, cruise around, and land? It's essentially no better than the stock Jet Ranger, except for the flight model. There's no combat in FSX, so most of its functions and capability are unused.

I'm just saying, if you're going to fork out $40, may as well get the best representation of the aircraft, one that's set in its natural habitat.

Sometimes I fly combat aircrafts in FSX, No I can't shot anything, byt I don't think that fighter pilots have to fight with someone everytime they fly :)

I agree with Wicked, now with DCS there is no real value in the Alphasim product. I think some may still buy it simply because they do not know about DCS or they just want to fly in FSX because they can.

In terms of flightmodel, DCS is far superior in everyway. Alphasims 3D model is not even up to the polycounts that are possible in FSX, it is IMO way overpriced and of inferior quality. FSX choppers are an after thought, you wont have a proper trim implementation or an accurate stability control system. CHoppers in FSX are untamed beasts with sloppy flight models. There may be exceptions but I have not found any.

But I fly FSX. WIth some of the decent 3rd party products and some great scenery like FTX, FSX is fantastic. I have a bunch of great stuff from Carenado (GA), and of course Shockwave ( AccuSim ), LevelD, PMDG and RealAir to name a few.

None of those aformentioned developers have bothered to produce a Helo for FSX, the reason I believe is becasue the FM is not up to the task. ED is the first to do it right.

Have you tried Dodosim's 206?

Never heard of it until now! A bit pricey but I like what I read.

I may consider a purchase after more research. Thanks for the heads up.

Dodo sim's great, REALLY looking forward to the Huey that's in development now.

I still do find a lot of these FSX models VERY expensive...they're on par or more expensive than the actual software the runs it which I find a little rediculous. Unfortunately that doesn't stop me if the model is done well and there are QUITE a few that are just superb.

The KA-50 no offense to Alphasim, is NOT one of those models hhehe.

I don't buy 3rd party addons for games. The free ones are just as good.

And yes some are just as expensive as the game thier for..

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Not to take anything away from FSX as it is a great commercial AC simulator and world. As far as combat AC are concerned although the models added to FSX for them look nice it is a case of being "All dressed up with no place to go" where combat is concerned. I had no problem leaving it behind in favor of Combat Sims like Black Shark. Also the AFM of the 25/25T in LockOn and the AFM of the KA-50 in DCS absolutely blows away ANY flight model I have formerly tried in FSX. Not even close IMHO.

For civillian aviation sims FSX is the obvious winner but that is all it has ever been or will ever be to me.

As far as FM are concerned the VRS Superhornet has a better FM than any Lockon or Falcon 4 aircraft. I agree with the lack of combat in MP people often fly the Hornet for FSX only can do aerobatics it really is without purpose. They made alot of mistakes with FSX acceleration particularly where the Hornets MP was concerned.

AGREED.

FSX addon is in no competition with DCS and is overpriced.

An addon should not be priced at a full game price.

But, the addon existed prior to DCS, so at least it was available.

Seeing those missiles and not being able to launch them is a downer.

FSX is Great! But it's a civ sim, not combat, never meant to be.

If they think they can sell this, that's great, and I'm sure it did sell.

But, it's good to have a variety of products available, so then we can also compare and have a choice!

We need to go on their Forums and make a post about DCS.

Take their business away? Get sued? Nah, everyone is titled to their opinion, and those who arent aware of DCS will only gain from a post like that :)

Microsoft Flight simulator is not realy my cup of tea. Only interested in military sims. I don't care if it is a tank sim or whatever as long as it is a military sim.

Next as realistic as possible.

So I have always found Microsoft Flight Simulators as boring. I have Century of Flight and I must say that I like the training documentation you get on the cds.

The same can not be said of Combat Flight Sim2 and before IL2 was the WWII I played (CFS 2 is a very good sim.).

The Dodosim's flight model is just as good, if not better than the DCS:Blackshark. It's only worth the money if you dont mind not shooting at anything, and just fly and explore. It's a pretty simple startup, but acts and fly's like a REAL helicopter should.

One experience I had flying with some buds over DeathValley, flew over the peaks of some mountains, (I had real world weather, and REX2.0 turned on) and my speed was right under the Velocity Never Exceed limit. On the other side of the peaks, the wind direction changed, blowing towards me over my rotor and (exceeding the VNE now) my rotor went into a retreating blade stall.....I was instantly flying with my left side banked toward the ground and had to instantly correct to avoid trees. (yes, they are collidable) :joystick:

I love the Dodosim Bell! :D

Very expensive indeed, but the developers spent many hundret houres creating this bird and they got it right.

I don't mind paying a bit more for real quality.

That said, I would have payed twice the money for BS.

Look at Steel Beasts, it goes for 130 Euros I think. That's a bit too expensive for my tase though. :P
