slug88 Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Didn't see that one coming! Hopefully this gets patched into DCS:Ka-50 as well! Q: Is it true that bird ingestion has been added? A: Yes, but it can be set on or off with .LUA setting. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=47144 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Eddie Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Holy ****. I totally missed that, thought you were taking the **** to start with. I can see it now, climbing away from the runway in DCS:A-10C when seagulls fly into both intakes shortly followed by a confused scream and then what was an warthog smouldering in the dirt.
Boberro Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 (edited) Yes, I suggest reading Russian part of annoucement. There are really many valuable informations straight from such kings as Chinz and other team members. IMHO it adds realism! LOL three of us wrote in same time xD Edited November 25, 2009 by Boberro ehhehe error xD Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... Namenlos Ein Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 IMHO it adds immerse! And makes the feathers fly!
Griffin Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 (edited) Yeah, seems like a very surprising feature. Makes me wonder if it will break or deteriorate the engine every time it happens? I believe most of the time the engine doesn't suffer critically from ingestions (depending on bird size and numbers of course). About the question if it will be patched to Ka-50, I don't think a bird ingestion would be too possible as Sharky's air intakes aren't exactly too prone for such thing. And by the way, this thread is in the wrong area. Edited November 25, 2009 by Griffin
Boberro Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 And makes the feathers fly! I used not that word I wanted, my sentence was a crap ;] It should have been written "realism". Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
Namenlos Ein Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 The birds ingestion is fun but it should be “full realism” if the birds can hit your airplane's canopy, for example. Or the nose cone.
Boberro Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Yes it should, it would be nice to see blood on canopy too. I imagine how ppl would be screwed when they flew 200 km example Su-25T or A-10 then they have been killed by pigeon  Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ

3Sqn_Sven Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Will be interesting to see how it is modeled as the effects of bird strike vary wildly based on size of birds, the number that hit you, where they hit you, and how fast your are going. Ie two seagulls down the intake at takeoff, less than ideal but not really a big deal, just RTB. Pelican to the cockpit at 500kts and it's all over. 3Sqn - Largest distributor of Flanker, Fulcrum and Frogfoot parts in the Black Sea Region

GGTharos Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Bird stew. Those rotors can chew up things harder than a bird. and IF a bird hits the rotors what do you think will happen??? GGTharos Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 No. It's a probabilistic simulation. You don't see them coming in RL anyway, you'll usually see the close call in a HUD tape or something. As such there's no point in wasting CPU resources to simulate the 3d object. I just hope that bird ingestion means AI birds in 3D world too! topol-m Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 I just hope that bird ingestion means AI birds in 3D world too! Yes there will be AI birds. New features are considered too - the newest in UAV reconnaissance technology probably will be implemented too http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/94/Bundesarchiv_Bild_183-R01996%2C_Brieftaube_mit_Fotokamera_cropped.jpg [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
EvilBivol-1 Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 (edited) As GG mentioned, there are no AI 3D birds. It's currently modeled as a statistical probability that increases as you fly at low levels. It's not terribly likely and it does not mean that every time you fly low, you will hit a bird. But the possibility is there and it will happen every once in a while. Yo-Yo put it this way: flying at 10 meters, you are likely to hit a bird once out of every three flights of 150-200 km. In the simulation, a bird strike will usually cause severe damage to one engine. Edited November 26, 2009 by EvilBivol-1 - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. Vekkinho Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 But the bird strike probability is optional feature, right? Can it can be deactivated by player just like failures? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
EvilBivol-1 Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 As mentioned in the FAQ, it can be disabled in one of the LUA configuration files. - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. The Parable of Jane's A-10 Forum Rules
ED Team JimMack Posted November 26, 2009 ED Team Posted November 26, 2009 I saw a documententary about Rolls Royce testing procedures. They shoot a large chicken carcase at speed into the engine, and it should have no effect on the engine. Not certain about a thanksgiving turkey! Having problems?
