I guess I need to work on my scouting some more. I found way too many units by flying into them and was lucky none of them brought manpads to the party. Flying over 8 humvees sitting on the backside of a ridge and flying over 5 M113s sitting in plain sight in a field on the safe flight back to base were some of the highlights. Good job the black shark has decent armour.

Can't you just host your own multiplayer session and fly in that?

You can then stop anyone else from joining in a number of ways, if you want to do it alone.

As far as using multiplayer maps for practice, they work just fine as single-player maps (no need to "host" a multiplayer session to play them).

After playing on the rookie server this weekend, I copied the .miz files from the temp directory and renamed them. I then flew them solo by selecting them from the mission menu. They worked just fine.

My apologies for not being able to meet the last few meet-ups. It seems to me that you guys are enjoying yourselves and I can't wait to get back into it once real life slows down just a bit.

Cheers!

Yeah, last week was fun, too - despite the marathon trek to the AO in the second mission.

Best bit for me was slaloming through the town at rooftop height, trying to dodge the ZSU fire. Great stuff.

Still copped something on the edge of town, though (ran out of buildings!) and lost the hydraulics.

I tried to autogyrate down to the ground, but the vertical speed was just too high, and though I landed nicely on the gear, it bounced right up again, and flipped over! :surprise: Frustrating.... but fun.

Silly thing is, I was still alive - but stuck in the cockpit. Oh well, new plane, please...

Sorry about all the waffle and expletives on TS, guys - but I was enjoying it :pilotfly:

Looking forward to this week's sorties - I've had some time to practice this week - still not up on the comms yet, though - thought shooting properly was more important ;)

JD

PS - just wanna say thanks to those guys who helped me achieve my first kill - even if it was just a fuel truck :idiot:

Thanks for last week Hijack. No lag for me at all and the server performed well. Thanks for hosting.

The mission was a blast (so to speak). Still getting shot down but ejecting before getting killed so technically I'm still alive. ;-)

I hope to see everyone again today.

I remembered to take a few screen shots this time. Only 3 mind you.

We were doing the Dragon map “Convoy hunting” tonight and had a lot of fun. I’m sorry for taking down “Zebedee” when shooting at a Humvee :music_whistling: and for spooking him with laser so he crashed :P Shit happens on the Rookie server.

Woots gunning down at some Humvee’s:

And he got both of them:

Thanks for showing up! I did not get a screenie of the scoretable this time, sorry.

Fun again last night - thanks for the help again, I'm obviously the greenest sprog of the group :)

Took some more happy snaps:

This is the home base:

Bases.jpg

Here's Eddie returning to it, minus the left engine...

EddieRTBsminusleftengine.jpg

Then we found the best way to go Roland and Hawk hunting:

Rolanddetecting.jpg

...well, perhaps not - but that was the first of 3 or 4 to go down at that point.

I got hit by a Humvee approaching a supposedly 'safe' FARP 2. Electrics out - no lift etc etc, so I landed and tried to shoot the beggar from the ground...

Me-noelectrics-nocollective-lotsale.jpg

... but couldn't see him through the trees and so couldn't get a bead on him - but the guys, in true team spirit, came along to help and I ejected to watch the show...

Watchingtheshow.jpg

...but then Rusty/HiJack got a little carried away...

Thanksmate.jpg

Thanks, mate!

We then proceeded to take FARP 2 with a "Scorched Earth" tactic:

FARP2scorchedearth.jpg

As Rusty mentioned, he spooked me by lasing my aircraft as I was trying to sneak up on a SAM - but I got my revenge, by continually trying to panic him over TS as he was passing the same point - just to rub it in, mate, here's another pic of HiJack 'flying low' :megalol:

Revenge.jpg

This left only Woots to fly the flag - here he just came across the .50 cal from the Humvee mentioned in HiJack's post

Woot's up?

Wootsup.jpg

Needless to say, even though we didn't reach the end of the mission, a good time was had by all.

My very sore neck, from craning it forward, trying to spot those pesky SAMs, is testament to how involving and fun these meets are.

Same time, next week

Jeez, you guys look like you have some fun in there! I'm going to have to join up one session! Eddie, loved the picture of the low flyer and then the crashed "result of" below it.

Yeah, it was the most fun I've had online since longbow 2! Helo's with a nice canyon mission where everyone has to crawl around on the deck - awesome!

Thanks for flying guys - I'll see you next Sunday.

Cheers

LOL--"got BS for Christmas" I down loaded it in Dec of 2008 with talk of the A-10 being released in Sept 2009. I waited 5 years for Dice to release a new BF game for the PC and it looks like I'll be doing the same with DCS. They were hoping to release a new module every 6 months (DVD retail version was released March 2009); so not only should I be flying the A-10 right now, I'd probably be flying a new chopper next month in March 2010. All complaints aside, I'd rather have quality than quantity so the extended wait should be worth it in the end.

I think you mean 9 months not 6 months, I never saw 6 months anywhere, nothing takes 6 months ;). They also changed the a10 from an a10A to a10C which is huge in my opinion.

Like you said, I'd rather them take their time and we can get the most bang for our buck instead of just another A +++ flight model. They've also got a few projects on the go, so hopefully some work is being done on the third module??

I'm sure you won't be disappointed :)

Many thanks to Hijack for hosting on his server again. It worked awesome but I have to admit I like a field full of targets than flying in the canyons and trying not to crash into the walls lol.

Those Rolands were really tough. I know I got killed a few times and didn't even see the missiles until it was too late.

Does anyone have any fool proof strategies for taking them out (instead of someone having to play rabbit so others can spot the launches)?

I don't have a solution to that - but won't it be fun when the A-10 is released, with this kind of mission - just call 'em in to take out the SAMs as you come across them - joint ops :)

And we all know how much the jockeys like SEAD...

Mind you - it could get crowded down the canyon - more excitement. :pilotfly:

Send in equipment that was built to do the job. The roland was built to kill stuff like the BS. Kinda no-go to engage it. It's like sending an ant's nest to kill an ant lion. :)

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

well i do not fully agree:

the vikher flies over 7.5 km and as experienced , the roland takes you on his laser at 8.something Km so...stay at 9 km switch to manually fire and take it out from outside his threat-radius

it works ....

another taktik is(allthough not quite real i think):

flying below 10m (R.alt) prevents sam start from a roland.

As long as im concerned he still does lock u with his laser but he will not shoot if u stay below 10m...

both above described taktiks against roland, work out fine if you stick to the minimum range/height.

I do not claim that this is fully realistic! .....thats not my intention either

Hey, whatever floats your boat. :)

However, i do not think that IRL any sane helo pilot would ever try to engage something like a roland, longer range missiles or not. The post asked for a fool proof solution to engaging SAMs, here we approach a real life scenario, IRL you try to have a margin for error and still be able to succeed with the mission, which is nearly impossible trying to nail a roland with the shark.

But like i said, if it's fun to you, dont let me talk you out of it. ;)

What he said. Attack choppers (and especially the Ka-50), are not meant to go up against heavy AD of any sort without SEAD support, let alone SAMs.

IMHO such systems should not appear in a mission unless it's intended to be taken out by a SEAD/Ground assualt prior to you entering its WEZ or you should have no need to enter its WEZ.

Missions like the one we flew on Sunday are not very well designed IMHO, and are not at all realistic. They are fine for airquake style fun its that's what you want, but not great for realism.

On a side note,

I wouldn't be all that happy about entering areas with SHORAD systems like the roland in the A-10C either. They would be less of a threat, and easier to deal with but still not nice. Give me my Viper and of course I'll gladly go and hunt them down, but hey, us Viper drivers are a bit mental.

Fully agreed on the latter, most of the time. I don't know which mission you guys ran, but Rolands and such are very nice for making a sort of "map edge" to punish people that don't stick to their target area. :D

Then again, I did greatly enjoy Panzers kill-the-hawk-sites mission as well, just as a challenge. :P
