Whenever I start taxiing or when I take off and I'm still on the ground (maintenance) radio channel, the maintenance technician says "Hey, what are you doing?!" or the Russian equivalent. This happens regardless of whether I have been cleared for taxi/control hover and whether external power is still connected or not.

Does anyone know why the guy is complaining, and more importantly, what I have to do to shut him up (besides not being on ground channel?)

As far as I understand it he is complaining that he still has his intercom plugged in when you start to move, I like to think that when you turn off ground channel you are also signaling him to unplug his headset.

First I thought the obvious; you forgot to remove external power. But it turns out it doesn't matter. :) I never noticed it before though.

yep, switch away from the ground channel (actually the direct feed intercom) , and either the guy detaches his headset from the chopper, or, at worst you can't hear him complaining ;)

In my experience, he doesn't complain if you requested taxi or take-off from the tower prior to moving. Guess that signals him to get unplugged and duck into cover. :-)

As stated in the original post, being cleared for taxi or take-off does not change anything for me. Are you sure the reason why he does not complain during your tests isn't that after getting clearance, you simply do not switch back to the ground channel?

I do that if he takes too long to rearm or refuel me. I kinda like the idea of him dangling by his headset, as punishment for being too slow :)

Careful with that, you may find yourself wit an unexplained engine failure if you tick off the ground crew guys.

I should have read your post more carefully. You're right, towards the end of the startup procedure I usually ask the ground crew to disconnect ground power and then place the switch from GRND CREW to VHF(2).

If I unterstand the linked thread correctly, this should also tell the ground crew to disconnect, shouldn't it? So, in other terms, with the channel selector set to GRND CREW the virtual crew is pugged in, and with the switch in any of the other three positions, they disconnect. Is that correct?

In that case, switching away from GRND CREW would have to be a mandatory step in pre flight/pre taxi procedures.

Both of those are correct.

I only respond to that little mechanical voice that says "Terrain! Terrain! Pull Up! Pull Up!"
