Geskes Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 (edited) No dudes you've got it all wrong. The china hat is called the china hat because it is red, and red is the color of communism. In the A10A this was called the Sovjet hat but it has been renamed for obvious reasons. EDIT: It is also referred to as the Osama hat among pilots deployed in the middle-east. olemetry Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 after some research, it looks like the word "coolie" is actually a deregatory term
Scabbers Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 (edited) after some research, it looks like the word "coolie" is actually a deregatory term Are you kidding me... It is the name for a conical asian hat that is prominent in south east asia. Hence the Coolie hat looks like a asian hat (domed). The china hat looks like a chinese buildings roof. The boat switch because it rocks like a boat. Edited November 15, 2010 by Scabbers Now where is that speed brakes control again? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
JHepburn Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 I agree Scabbers, but if you google it you'll get the following (third link after Wiki and Urban Dictionary, lol) http://www.thefreedictionary.com/coolie
olemetry Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 no, no - you are right, i made that whole thing up. please feel free to walk up to an asian person and call them the c-word to their face, you cracker ass, white honky. they should put a little more slope to the button and we can call it the david duke hat instead. 1
Scabbers Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Have either of you traveled south east asia. They sell them in the market with the label Coolie hat for tourists. so I am not saying I am going to go call some one that but the hat it self has been identified by that for a long time. lets not make a mountain out of some dust. Now where is that speed brakes control again? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
rocketeer Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Scabbers is right. The china hat looks like a chinese buildings roof, because they don't have such kind of hats. Chinese/south asians wear hats that are conical, with a pointed top, esp. among farmers. The so-called China hat has a flat top. From a side view it does look a bit similar to the coolie hat except for the flat top. Coolie in chinese dialect means laborer, employee, servant etc. It can also mean those who does physical, manual labor, as that was common in the colonial days. These coolies typically wear domed shape hats working in the fields. Hence coolie hat = domed/conical shaped hat. Think of the movie Platoon, what kind of hats do the vietnamese farmers wear in the padi fields. My A10C cockpit thread
leafer Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 (edited) they should put a little more slope to the button and we can call it the david duke hat instead. LOL Now, the misconceptions and stereotypes... A little heads up, china hats are not "prominent" in S.E. Asia just as chopsticks aren't used by Asians the world over. I can think of only one country in S.E. Asia that the hats are worn and it's Vietnam. The china hats are worn in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam and NOT part of the culture in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philipines, etc...
