Boberro Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I wonder if it will finally implement so players could see each other's custom skins. Yes it would be great. The only way to implement this would be to download (during mission setup) the textures of each player with a custom skin. So if you and I were playing and we both had custom skins, you would have to download mine during mission load and I would have to download yours. You can imagine how much this will increase load times as we would each download a full set of aircraft textures. There simply is no way around having a local copy of each others textures I'm afraid. I strongly doubt you will see this anytime soon...if ever. Unfortunate yes, but reality :( Checkboxes :) Add checkbox and by clicking it you as admin of server decide globally if players can download skins from each other or even players can decide if someone wants to download it or not ;) In Australia hornets are dog-sized, I bet they are :D Well I heard in Australia many spieces are big :D 2 Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Moa Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 (edited) Thanks - Now I know what a dedicated server is :smartass: The big thing about the 'dedicated server' will hopefully be that a DirectX 9c compatible graphics card is no longer required to host the game. This was not explicitly spelled out, but that's the usual meaning of the phrase 'dedicated game server' software (so, there is a small chance I could be wrong with this assumption). There are companies out there that lease/hire-out space on dedicated game servers. These have the game pre-installed and all you have to do is pay the hosting fee (which means you don't need admin skills, just cash, to host your own game server). Usually these 'dedicated game servers' are actually virtualized machines - which means limited graphics (countered by excellent network bandwidth), so a game requiring a dedicated graphics card can't be hosted under this model. Just last week I was offered free unlimited-traffic 100 Mb/s up & down game hosting from Auckland, New Zealand to move my stallturn LockOn FC2 server instance to (it currently has a 15 Mb/s down-2 Mb/s up link). Unfortunately I had to turn it down since the hosting quad Xeon machine could not mount a graphics card (even a low-profile card would not fit the rack mount). The removal of the requirement for a DX9c graphics card would mean I could host an A-10C server free-of-charge (apart from the one-off-charge of another A-10C license). I'm sure the removal of this requirement means that many other people would also be able to lease a game server, or press an older machine (with inadequate graphics) into service as a game server. So this is great news to me and I'm looking forward to the day the dedicated server is completed (since work on it is in progress). If true, this is completely awesome news Eagle Dynamics & The Fighter Collection. Hats off to you. Edited March 17, 2011 by Moa 1

Irregular programming Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Yup, twitter is really great. I love it when companies actually take their time to make their twitters worth following.

uri_ba Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 watching the twitter page I actually saw another thing that drew my attention. The bees are a buzzing now. Where is the honey? can that reefer to the rumors about DCS:F18? As for the dedicated server, considering the fact that the server only needs to track the mathematics of the units, I really hope it would allow other OSs to run the server. i.e Linux. I hope that they will be able to follow the Half-life server model and supply us with a dedicated binary, that does not require game license to run. I'm fine with TS model of licensing - free for community, paid for commercial applications, so if someone wants to sell you a server they need to pay ED. if a squadron wants a server, it will be for free. that way ED has the ability to partially monitor that their efforts are not going for the "wrong" hands. 1 Creator of Hound ELINT script My pit building blog Few DIY projects on Github: DIY Cougar throttle Standalone USB controller | DIY FCC3 Standalone USB Controller
epoch Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 The dedicated server news is great, and it would be fair to assume that it will be a non-gfx console of some sort (that would be the most sensible approach). I only hope it has Starforce removed too, otherwise hosting from a virtrual server will be out of the question. Then again, I can't imagine the benefit of Starforcing a dedi server binary so hopefully the point is moot.
