What role does the F-18C play in the modern US Navy/Marines? Are they essentially just reserves for the first-tier Superhornets, or are they still a frontline platform?

It remains a frontline airframe. The Super Hornet is a more capable aircraft, but they are not fully deployed fleet wide at the moment. My understanding is that they are used more for alert CAS missions with their limited loiter time. The Super Bugs have a longer loiter time and I believe are doing more of the on-call/on-station CAS.

The Legacy's are still frontline, serving in concert with the Supers. The Rhino is very much fully deployed. All air wings have at least 2 Rhino squadrons, with CVW-5 recently replacing the last of their Cs with Es. Also, if you watch the PBS program Carrier, you will see that they are largely used for the same roles on deployment. The Cs just need to hit a tanker a bit sooner ;)

I am very excited about having a Hornet done DCS style. Not only are Hornets nifty little planes, I also won't have to learn everything from scratch. (VRS FTW)

Sorry, what I should have said to be more clear is that carrier airwings are not composed entirely of Super Bugs. I understand that the the Super Bug is fully operational and has been so for several years.

Well according to their posts though they also don't know themselves at this stage.

yes... well moderators are also not ED developers and most of them, if not all, are testers also... again they are not developers, so they don't know unless they are given stuff to test :)

Was standing it it yesterday and most likely today also. Would be neat to see them being dropped from inside the bay though.

You all remember where Wag's spent a lot of his time before LOMAC right?

He worked with CJ Martin on Janes F/A-18! :music_whistling:

You do remember that ED needs a contract to sign first before model anything that flies right?

I seem to remember Matt saying that was not a prerequisite to any development, but rather that should a Military contract come along it would refocus resources.

From GamingShogun :

Q) When deciding what aircraft to do focus on in the next DCS game, what are the criteria you consider?

MW) It truly does vary, but the most common reasons are:

1- Existing contract.

2- Access to very detailed documentation and subject matter experts (pilots of the aircraft).

3- How well it fits into our long-term TBS and DCS program plans.

4- How well we think the broad market will accept the product (not just our online forums).
