The only thing that has changed is your expectation of what a simulator should offer.

Exactly:)

So my main question (finally) is this.

When does a simulator stop being a simulator and become nothing more than a video game?

Hmm, when there is a new "Sim"/"Game" available that defines the new deFacto standard...

I guess it is about using the available technical ressources to create an experience that most closely matches the reality, what can be defined as a Simulation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simulation

whereas a game is more or less a special kind of simulation/training to prepare you for real life action without the risks (at least this is what I understand from the literature)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game

In my oppinion it does not matter, if it is called a game or a simulation, because only my personal perception matters :D

I like "playing" in a accurate "simulation".

What is so interesting about this thread is, most of us share a common hobby, that is Flight simulations, we all had a similar approach throughout our childhood and most came a long way from slideshows like JET, Combat A.C.E etc. to the DCS Series, and we love it! Because this is our hobby!

A lot of us spend time and money on building homepits, crafting avionic interfaces and the like, talking about tactics and real life air combat procedures.

That is what the simulation is about, let us participate in a hobby.

I totally agree that we will look back to the DCS Series in some years and wail the missing "Brain-Feedback-Modulators" that induce the feeling of G-Forces along with a synapse black out and the like

...but that is the future, today DCS is our baby and it's a lot of fun may it be called game, sim, hobby or whatever...

Happy flying ye old grumpies!!! :pilotfly:

The first i bought was F/A-18 in late -96-98 dont remember, I order two Fly games one was the F/A-18 (red envelope) and a second one that i dont remember what it was that have not arrived yet! And then i saw on a board for The US Tank crew, I write a nice letter to a member there that i would like to have a copy of that simulator! And he post it to me, So i have a copy of a Tank sim not to the public that i play whit in the begining and still have the cd. So one of the US tank crew members was kind enough to send a copy of his cd?

I'd say that the first one that counted (not-arcade) was Falcon 4.0. Yeah, how's that for getting your feet wet for the first time? And AFTER that, I tried Jane's IAF.

I know I tried Strike Commander, too, at some point, but I never actually owned it. I label it arcade-y, though. If anyone says that Wing Commander counts, I shall fart in your general direction!

One of the early combat flight simulator games, can't remember which exactly. First serious simulation would have been Falcon 4.0.

Technically?

But I was like... seven years old or something when we actually played it (doubt it was 1990 which would've made me five), though I still remember it.

Aside from that I never really played any flight sims. I played some IL2 games but decided WW2 combat sims were dull and repetitive.

FS 2.0.

It was my dad's and I was quite young...and very unimpressed. I was more into Carmen Sandiego in '85.

I didn't pick up a flight sim again until MFS '95, then CFS and so on.

I don't remember what it was called. It was on my C64. All I remember is it was an F18 (I think), wire frame, and I loved flying under the Golden Gate bridge that was in it.

My very own first PC was AT with 12MHz, and very first two games that came with it were flight simulators - Fighter Bomber and MS Flight Simulator 4.0. I have done my first mid-air refuel when I was 8 years old :P

I walked in after my booster shot and saw my dad and his good friend playing this (FS 2.0). Not sure why I remember that moment so clearly, but it WAS the start of my love for flight sims. This and GATO (sub sim) were my first sim experiences (even though very young).

I've played pretty much everything under the sun after that point.

Air Warrior III 1997

I'm glad you liked that one! I was one of the external Beta testers and it was truly a labor of love. Of all the titles I've been blessed to Beta, there was such cooperation between the devs and testers to get it right and put out a product that would keep people happy and allow for expansion to keep it interesting that you didn't find very often. Too bad they didn't keep the series going, or I'd still be playing it.......

I can't really say which was exactly first but it was back in 1989 (or early 1990) and I played F-19 Stealth Fighter, F-15E Strike Eagle, LHX and Chuck Yeager Air Combat.

Now 20+ years later I can't seem to find those floppies, probably somewhere misplaced in the old apartment...
