Ice9ine Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Greetings, Just a quick one. I have had this incredible sim now only for a few days. I currently have a Logitech Extreme 3D pro stick and I am usiong that in conjunction with the keyboard. Naturally and after reading information on here, it would be wise for me to add some extra peripherals. What would you guys recommend be my initial purchase please, the TRack IR5 or HOTAS Warthog? I will then buy the other item as cash flow committs later. Thanks in advance. 1 AMD 1100T Phenom II x 6 / Gigabyte HD 6970 / 8 gig DDR3 / WIN7 64 / ASUS VH242H LCD 24" @ 1080p / ASUS M4A88TD-M / Thermaltake 750w / Logitech G35 7.1 headphones
Kaiza Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I think most people will say HOTAS, but for me it would be without a doubt trackir. MTFDarkEagle Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Given you already have a joystick for now: trackir. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
Tek Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 tir, it changes things entirely. a good hotas is a must too but if the space between purchases isnt too long, get the tir first since you have a joystick and can live with it (?) for a while. i played around with the face track no ir thing but for me it was a " how the hell did i live without this" when i got tir 5. i want the warthog too but i cant justify the price atm... i have an X-52 and i really like it but will upgrade to the warthog after my SB build. Soul Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I was in the same position you are in a few days ago, I have the same joystick and went with the TrackIR and I am happy I did. While the joystick is not the best, it is functional and I know Nate can give you a good profile to maximize its functionality for A-10C. My suggestion would be TrackIR first and HOTAS later.

Rooks Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 (edited) I was in this situation a few years ago and was given this advice: you must be able to control the aircraft first - Pilotasso circa 2005. In my case upgraded to x52 from a crappy j/s & throttle (+keyboard) very happy I did. TIR is still on the wishlist but happy just being able control the aircraft better than I could before If you are happy with your current stick then get the TIR If you aren't then the choice just got simple. Edited June 28, 2011 by Rooks Found my thread 6 years ago - Thanks again to Pilotasso
Reb Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 i have been trying out the facetracknoir the past 2 days , invested in a ps3 web cam ( the drivers have to be found) i run vista ultimate x64 .the cam is nice but could never get the shakes out of the face track, the more i tried to tweak the worse it got , but if you can make it work it will save some money and i seen vids wher it worked pretty good for them, but i cant get their settings, i also used the trakir killer that just takes out your head movement for stick and mouse and keyboard is all i found ,still think its a good concept......Reb
Tone71 Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 TrackIR. You won't regret it. As others have said, you already have a functional joystick which you can upgrade at a later date. latearrival Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I bought a HOTAS first, then TrackIR. If you bought a cheaper HOTAS (e.g Saitek or CH Products) perhaps you could buy both at the same time?! juankeiko Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Hi Ice9ine. Yesterday i had received my Thrustmaster warthog. I have as well the track ir, but if i must choose wich one i must buy first, will be the Thrustmaster. It's a nice joystick, really good. winz Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I was in the same situation. Had a Logitech wireless stick and was deciding between a HOTAS and TrackIR. Bought TrackIR and never regreted it. You have a stick, so you can fly. The ability to look around is much more beneficial then the added comfort and precision of a HOTAS. The Valley A-10C Version Revanche for FC 3
Boulund Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I was in the same situation. Had a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro stick and was deciding between a HOTAS and TrackIR. I tried building a Free-track cap and used it with my webcam in Black Shark and I was blown away by the immersion. Headtracking is in my humble opinion very important in flight sims. I'd find a way to get a well working headtracking solution before venturing into HOTAS-territory. Cali Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I'd get the TrackIR now, since it's $150 compared to $400-500 dollars for the Warthog. Save up a little longer and get the Warthog in a few months, if that's an option. I wouldn't fly without my TrackIR and I can't fly without my HOTAS and since you have a stick already...well....see what I'm saying. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
S77th-konkussion Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Need both, but track ir first.. then there are several HOTAS to consider.. [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]
BigBANGtheory Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 IMHO if you have access to a webcam or Xbox Kinect experiment with FaceTrackNoIR first before forking out on TrackIR5. If you are unhappy with the results you have lost nothing. I live in the UK and a TrackIR5 with pro clip will cost you upwards of $225 minimum! I know when I started using the TM HOTAS Warthog I knew very soon afterwards that I also needed pedals for the experience I was after. I would advise that you factor this cost in with the TM Warthog. Personally I went HOTAS first then pedals, then headtracking with FaceTrackNoIR.
Ice9ine Posted June 29, 2011 Author Posted June 29, 2011 Thanks for your feedback everyone. I will experiment with FacetracknoIR and if not suitable invest in TrackIR first then HOTAS. Cheers. dusel Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Greetings, Just a quick one. I have had this incredible sim now only for a few days. I will then buy the other item as cash flow committs later. Thanks in advance. I bought the game some weeks ago and got a HOTAS (the Logitech G940) ...yesterday I ordered the TrackIR, I think its 50-50, doesnt matter what you get you'll find something missing sooner or later... it was important to me, that i stick to the game and play it, so i was sure to get the HOTAS first because without a HOTAS in my opinion the game is not playable with fun (I tried it with my old MS Sidewinder Force Feedback II) so, get the HOTAS first... then see if you like the game and stick to it... soon after you're in the basics and able to fly, you'll find out that you need to use buttons to change your view, and you'll find out that you need your eyes to spot a SAM launch etc. so you'll get the TrackIR :) in short words, get the HOTAS first... its much better to learn the controls on a HOTAS and then, after you're good with it, you'll see for yourself the things that make a TrackIR necessary... if you do it the other way, you'll have to change the whole controls...
S77th-konkussion Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 if you do it the other way, you'll have to change the whole controls... that is 100% backwards... [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]
