Hehe - So I wrote about a week ago "Bummer 64 bit only"

I was amazed by the quick responses of this active community.

All I had was an old quad core running Vista 32. I was told DCS A10 would run it fine on my 32 bit system...which it did. It ran fine and I love the sim.

A few nice guys on this forum warned me I would want more...better OS, Thrustmaster, TrackIR, yadda yadda yadda.

They were sooo right. So in the last week I have bought:

Track IR5

VAC -Voice activated Commands - This is a must guys!! It is so awesome and for $18 you can't beat it.

Still not satisfied that I had bled enough for such an awesome sim today I ordered a new computer system! Spendy you ask...yeah very....over kill for a "Game' -- Never I say!!:P

I plan to build it myself. In case anyone is interested here are the specs of what I ordered:

(Lots of overclocking about to go down too)

MB ASUS|MAXIMUS IV EXTREME (REV 3.0)

MEM 4Gx2|CORSAIR CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9R x2

WATER COOLER CORSAIR| CWCH80 R

CPU INTEL|CORE I7 2600K 3.4G 8M R

CASE CORSAIR| CC800DW RT

ASUS Radeon HD 6870 1GB - I am going to set up the eyefinity on three monitors.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

I already have :

ATX PSU

Three Raptor hard drives at 10000 rpm - Looking at SSDs in near future

Multiple burners & drives

Thrustmaster Cougar - rebuilt

Next I plan on: Thrustmaster MFDs with mini monitors & one day my very own A-10...yeah I wish.

So my wallet maybe smaller but my grin is bigger!!

Hey DCS - Bring it on...I am ready. :music_whistling:

Great community guys. I am glad to be a part of.

Username55,

I did order everything (those links are from the receipt) I have not ordered the 6870 - I have to wait for a bid on ebay to end but if I do not win the bid I believe it is a good card...suggestions?

I would love to hear feedback. I studied for days to decide on these components. Really like the Sandy Bridge & p67.

The board and case are a bit over the top... but live large.

I will let you know what I can get out of this overclocking system.

I will probably only go to highest 4.5 ghz @1.37

But found this:

"no signs of instability at 4,700 MHz with a vcore of 1.37-39 offset with highest load temps around 67-74c"

Looking forward to that new computer smell......ahhh

yeah that computer will rock, and actually I thought I read 5870 for some reason so I was going to suggest an upgrade. doh!

sandy bridge and p67 are great! I have 2 i5 2500k computers and both got to 4.5ghz @1.2-1.3v overclock on air cooling with EASE. Idle temps low 30s, full load 70s, gaming 50s. It was ridiculous how easily it worked lol. With water cooled Im sure you could go 5ghz if you wanted!

Because of the DCS: A-10 I bought a new video card (NVidia GT 9800GT), 2 more gigs of RAM and Track IR 5 (worth the $$$!)

Best stimulus plan ever! :D

Same here - upgraded GPU and RAM, then bought two more screens, TMWH and rudder pedals, TM MFDs, TIR5, a Controlpad...good grief! And all without a second thought.

Username55 - What Mobo did you use?

Lane - If nothing else buy the TrackIR. It really gives the "suspension of disbelief" (if you don't know what that means: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspension_of_disbelief#Video_games).

Also the VAC is cheap and works great for comms and you could program it to handle some other HOTAS commands too.

112th - Since I have been looking at systems for the last few days I enjoyed seeing what you are getting. Looks like a really nice setup!

Exciting isn't it. New computer smell is like a new car smell: very satisfying!

After you get it, if you get a chance, let me know how you like everything and what settings you can use for the sim. I am interested in that power supply and vid card you ordered. And REALLY interested in the Eyefinity when you get that going.

It's just eyefinity capable. I don't have 3 monitors (yet) lol.

Thought I would buy a PC that will be upgradable easily and will last a good while too. I'm sure this could run things at max or close to max without to much trouble.

Next purchase is a TrackIR 5 unit, then a larger monitor. But will have to sell my existing PC first.

I also bought a TMWH and TrackIR5 for DCS A-10C. Now I am looking for rudder pedals and started thinking about a multi-monitor setup, which would also require a new graphics card... I urgently need to win in the lottery

I still haven't been able to justify water cooling; seems to me a big liability for a comparatively little speed increase over the traditional method. I put the extra money into a faster CPU instead.

I guess that depends on if you plan to really overclock or not.

With a Sandy Bridge K and mobo setup like I got the intention is to overclock. While I can achieve good speeds with stock/air cooler the real gem is to go for more. Like Username said 5ghz with watercooling - Tom's hardware confirms this.

OC can be a hobby all unto itself.

I am not water cooling the north bridge (yet) because the mobo I am getting has some good cooling already.

I did go for the larger water cooler for the cpu however. At $106 it is not that much more than a really good aftermarket air cooler.

The Sandy K is incredible for $300. Maybe only four cores but built to oc and really easy to do so. It can compete with those $1k processors.

But your point is good my friend, just justifying my cooler choice. :)

In my experience it is certainly more hassle than it's worth. Had a w/c rig previously and it really was more trouble than the benefits could justify.

Of course, there are ways around it now. Closed loop systems like the Corsair H50/60/70 give you the water cooling benefits without the hassle. Using a H70 myself and they are great. The only benefit to a full w/c setup over a closed loop, is being able to cool other components it you want to.

Before you get the Video Card of your budget. Take a look at this new company with an interesting business model on that subject.

Video Card Leasing. It is an interesting concept considering I have several old video cards in a box in the garage, I have to admit it is worth contemplation at least.

Infinite upgrades on top of the line video cards.

3 raptors in raid 0 will be right up there with a SSD.

i72600k is a great cpu but, not sure how much performance boost you will see with that video card by itself tho.

I think the bottle neck would be the graphics card .

HOWEVER, i72600k is fing amazing. If you ever want to get more powerful graphic cards, this guy will not bottleneck you (My q9650 at 4ghz bottlenecked my 3x gtx280s for years but i72600k handles them easily... easy overclock to 4800mhz on water).
