I think i'll put in a request to have these new features removed since it's causing so much upset to customers :D heck, lets reintroduce the old DX8 LOMAC graphics for 1.3.0! :pilotfly:

 

its ok Mustang, we just want to see the whole thing with out all that movie stuff, since some of us want to see the LOD and see how far away we can see. :joystick:

Just remember its things like this that irritate the people sharing updates... they want to show off a new effect and all people can do is say how much they hate it. I think common sense says that invasive effects like this would be toggle-able... if not we can complain when it actually effects us.

 

So in response to something you dont like, try a more constructive response if you enjoy ED sharing these screenshots of new effects and such... this isnt directed at you Mastiff.... just a general thought ;)

how will the camera knows where to focus ? to far / to close ?

which object will be sharp on the screen and what will be washed out by the camera depth of field ?

always that what is on the center of the screen ? :dunno:

I dont think you will get an explanation until these effects are finalized. Remember, all this is still a WIP.

okay, i know it's still wip but what is the goal?, so how will the camera knows where to focus and in what depth - maybe the narrow view will bring the "focus to the far/distance" ? :dunno: im just curious :helpsmilie:

i guess it will be similar like in arma but i cant remember how was looking and how it worked in arma, i have not played for 4 years or longer

I understand you are curious... but I think as they add new effects and learn what they can and cant do with them it makes it tough to say what the goal is, there are many factors as they tweak and tune, maybe you will get an answer... I am just trying to let you down easy ;)

Hmm, what about simply focussing the things in the screen center where you actually look?

 

Edit: to be more precise, only objects near to you and add the absolute edges of the screen get out of focus... that's how it looks to me. Especially the screenshot with the truck at the near right edge of vision.

what would you focus on if two objects are both in near line of sight but far away from each other? The game can't tell which one you're looking at (unless you define exact point to focus on certain object - like 1 pixel, but if you did this moving head notch left/right will keep changing focus, which would be very annoying and still not working well)

I think people are Overthinking things, Depth of Field only needs 2 points, the Lens and the Target.

 

Free Camera Mode, Point Camera, Press NUMPAD DEL/. to Set/Choose Target. Zoom (Wide/Tight) with RCTRL / and *.

I would think it would go by the center of the screen, but then I can see why that wouldnt work well as you arent always looking at the center of the screen... but you might be able to adjust... think about how your eye works, you can see something past what you are looking at and you may have to turn your head to focus on it... at the least you need to move your eyes to do so... I know its way different when you are looking at a screen which is trying to mimic what your eyes would be looking at... but still...I think it could be an effect you could fly with if done right and could judge your focus decently, ignoring things like glass, etc.

that would be part of the lens, for simplicity sake..

 

I can list off about 100 things needed to simulate a camera.

But for a field of view blur effect are you trying to emulate a camera in game or are you trying to emulate your eyes... that is the question... the goal would be to use the effect while you play I would think.

same thing I guess. focal point would be center of the screen, whether it would focus on the ground or an aircraft would depend on distance to object, etc.... I guess.

It is the only part of the camera/lens that controls depth-of-field.

I think the first time I so an effect like this was a CoD game when you put your eye up to the sights on a sniper rifle... cant remember which one... anyways I think dont right it could be a very cool effect to have in the sim while you fly, although, how would it effect spotting targets? Would it help or hinder? I can think of reasons for both I suppose...

Some things maybe people are curious about, and yes, I know it's WIP, but for example:

 

1) Looking straight ahead through the HUD, is the point of focus on the terrain, airplane, or sky in front of the airplane or is it on the HUD?

 

2) Looking straight ahead but wanted to check the MFCD quick just by darting your eyeballs down. Essentially you would have to point the center of the screen down to the MFCD to bring it in focus.

 

It would be interesting to see how they implement this for sure.

 

Either way, I think it looks quite amazing. I'm excited as hell for EDGE. (I actually haven't even been flying because I'm seeing all these screenshots and don't want to fly in our current rendering engine!)

COD4 I think, BF3/4 as well.

 

The issue with Center screen focus is if you have the F1 camera looking out the HUD Glass in the default position,

The Focus would be on the ground/horizon and not the cockpit instruments, unless you have OR/TrackIR,

 

It will be annoying to have to move the camera to focus on instruments, unless the cockpit is always in focus and DoF Filter only applies to Outside objects/terrain. (which is what it looked like in Ells Screenshots).
