diveplane Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 we need the multi cpu support . 1 https://www.youtube.com/user/diveplane11 DCS Audio Modding.
Pilotasso Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Its going to be DX11 which is going to relieve some of the CPU burdain to the GPU. :) So we should see some improvement off the bat even before multi CPU arrives. .
OttoPus Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 It has been said that the DCS is moving to multi-core capability: here http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1728418&postcount=9 here http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1728430&postcount=11 keeping in mind that http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1728517&postcount=16
Raven68 Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Thanks for the links OttoPus. From that we can say it will be coming but it will take time. ... C++ code base of DCS is >1.5M lines of non-trivial and sometimes very complex code, which was mosty architectured in the single-CPU era.... Whew!! it will be a daunting task to rework!! remon Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 "Update: Today we incorporated the new trees and high elevation forests into the map (once the map is in DCS, we can evaluate the performance impact of tree collision and decide what we will do). We are also in the process of now converting the 100 meter per pixel elevation mesh to 10 meter. Once that is done, we will recalculate all the terrain shadow projections, normal maps, and object shadows. Today the team also started to set up the ground shading and sun lighting color parameters that we believe will start to give the world a much more natural look. The biggest challenge has been finding the right balance of ground textures between visual detail and map file size. Not a promise, but if all goes well, I hope to have some new images or a video for you all on Friday." New update from Matt. Does that mean that there could be an option to enable tree collision per map, or are they talking about EDGE in general? For example some smaller maps could have tree collision?

Flagrum Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 (edited) Sounds like they will test to see if its possible to have at all... I would rather expect it to be a per-map setting as I would expect the possible performance impact to be in direct relation to the number of trees on a map. If there are only few trees and the performance hit is bearable, why disabling it if only other maps would suffer otherwise? But yes, the evaluation could come to the conclusion, that even a few trees would have a too big impact on the performance ... edit: "number of trees per map" is maybe wrong. More important might be "max number within preload area", i.e. how many trees can be seen at once. So, even if Nevada lacks trees in general, one bigger forrest could render our hopes nil if flying over it would stall the FPS to 0 ... Edited October 29, 2013 by Flagrum

I guess we will just see how testing goes, lets hope it is atleast bearable enough to add to maps on a limited basis depending on tree count... ALDEGA Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 If trees can stop your helicopter, then they can also stop enemy bullets. In addition to collision detection, line of sight occlusion for AI is also required. Currently, AI units can see through trees and fire their weapons accordingly. For large forests, which are rendered in blocks in DCS (IIRC), a simple bounding box could be used for each forest section, for both collision detection and vision occlusion. This should limit the performance impact, and still improve gameplay significantly.
kontiuka Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Well, the collision detection would have to have a minimal impact even on machines with just the minimum system requirements. I guess you could have an option to turn it off in single player but what about multiplayer? It would have to be on for everyone or off for everyone.

Well following EDGE is supposed to be the dedicated server tools later on, so maybe it could be an option server side, but who knows what the future holds right :) The way I understand tree collisions, I cant imagine they would be something you could turn on and off like a graphic option, but I could be wrong.
