You must spread rep...

If I want to give a NEGATIVE rep to someone that already has a lot of rep, the message comes up:

 

"You must spread some reputation around before giving it to XXXX again"

 

How is this a fair situation?

 

I always rep the new guys. How come I cant NEG REP the big posters?

That message is fairly self-explanatory, imo. It's not about him having a lot of reputation, it's about you having repped him before. You cannot serial-rep someone, so to speak, there has to be a certain amount of reppings between each time you use the feature on any one individual.

1) I dont think I have repped him before

2) I have had both a positive and negative rep off him.

 

Perhaps you could check the settings.

1) Unfortunately there's no way to check, for me. But note that this can be a LONG time ago - the important thing here isn't time elapsed, it is how many reppings have been performed. Which leads into the next item:

2) Which only means that he gave you a positive rep, then repped a whole bunch of other people during the intermediate time, and then gave you the negative rep. Again, it's the amount of reppings that matter, not the time.

 

For example, since I don't rep people very often (imo it's sort of a silly system :P ) the few times I do want to rep something I'm almost always given that line. I've had it come up on people I know for pretty darn sure I haven't repped in the last 6 months - but on the other hand, I hadn't repped much other people either in those 6 months. ;)

 

I've also seen people rep me not specifically for something I said, but just because they needed to "spread" rep in order to be able to rep the guy they actually want to rep.

Right. New RepUp regulations makes no sense at all. You can't give reputation for most of the posts... even for those where someone actually does something for the community. For example: Dragons Missions pack @ http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=1407162#post1407162

Makes no sense, I want to RepUp him, for he puts an effort and dedicates his time to help the community and when I try to rep him I get the silly "Sorry, you can't..." Gent's, new rep rules is an obvious overkill.

And I got repup for typing "Good job ED, keep it up!" in "A-10C takes SimHQ best commercial flight sim award" Now, how is that an achievment worth being repped?

Yeah, the big posters seem to be "protected". Probably how they got all their rep. Reminds me of certain government workers.

 

Personally though, I wish they would get rid of neg rep. It just starts personal fights and pisses people off, and the big posters use it to destroy any beginner they don't like. In a word, you end up losing new guys from the board, and your products.

The rep system in its current state is terrible, I just tried to rep several people and it told me each time that I have to spread more rep. This is ridiculous, I'm not trying to rep the same 3 people over and over again, in fact I haven't repped anyone for quite some time cause I'm always getting this message. I've never encountered such an annoying rep system before.

I don't understand the need for the rep system anyways. Nobody actually uses it based on how much someone contributes to the community or how accurate one's information is. I've gotten rep for some really stupid stuff were I just said "lol". Negative rep is stupid because it's basically used as a tool for all the fan boys to harass anyone with an idea or comment that they don't like, irregardless of how true or untrue the comment or idea is. There is a difference between someone being an asshat and deserving negative rep and someone saying " Hey I'm not sure I like this" and all of the people with the ED can do no wrong mentality spamming negative rep over and over as much as they can.

The fact is the rep system is enabled on this forum, but it is very bad. I just tried to rep mikoyan for the awesome 3D thrust vector nozzles video he posted in Photos and Videos and I can't. I don't even remember the last time I have given him rep but there you go again: you must spread... I'm getting this the last few times I tried to rep different forum members.

Agree 100%, in the BMS forums they don't have rep, but a thank you, which is the same as the rep system here. Like you said, it's basically friends repping you or someone that doesn't like you giving you bad rep.
