Mechwarrior (mech simulation) teaser trailer

This looks particulary interesting. I hope it will be like DCS but for mechs and with BattleTech rules, though, I don't think the odds are by my side here. :(

Their forums are at http://mwomercs.com

There are a number of developer blogs, and also Q & A postings that have revealed quite a bit already on how things will work.

They have not announced TrackIR support (yet), but looking at all of the effort that has been put into the cockpits, and how the video has the pilot's view panning around... I'd be VERY surprised if head tracking was not supported. I'd guess that TrackIR is nearly a sure thing. It will be interesting to see if they also manage to support/allow alternatives (Kinect PC, Free Track, Face Track).

The developers are hard core BattleTech fans, and to the extent that it is feasible, they appear to be staying true to canon. So far, it looks VERY promising.

Q. Will MechWarrior have support for custom mapping joysticks/other input devices? (multiple device support?)

A. We have partnered with some of the industry’s biggest hardware manufacturers and will be doing our best to support all types of joysticks and flight systems.

Its fair to assess that TrackIR will be supported.

Good that they are going the F2P route, I really did not want to have to pay another monthly subscription fee.

If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

You mean like MS Flight? :joystick:

meh, know any other mech warrior games coming out? we don't exactly have a choice. i will say the mech design is a huge improvement though. atlas looks fierce.

can't wait to see their take on classics like madcat. they certainly have the skill to make it great.

Unbelievable... With all the today’s technology and graphic possibilities, that's all they managed to come up with?

It doesn't matter at all, if they manage to get the tactics and immersion of Mechwarrior 2 and 3 into this "Simulation" - If they make another XBOX ready Mech-shooter with stunning graphics but trigger-happy explosion-wow-efffects-competition it will suck, anyway.

The amazing thing about MW2 was the tactical finesse, to actually use LRMs as they are designed. Most of the times we didn't even see the enemy when using arty Mechs...

Seems they support TrackIR and hopefully multiple controllers like my TM Warthog - another important thing they need to get from MW2/3.

I do look forward to this, anyway. Let's hope they perhaps do it like Rise of Flight or better a small offline campaign and LAN mode.

Errr... what is it that you think should be in there?

Keep in mind, they haven't even gotten to Beta testing yet.

This is a PC title. If it ever makes it on to XBox, it will be adapted back from this. It doesn't appear to be dumbed down for XBox, from what I can see.

As for tactics, etc.... they are adding in what they call "Information Warfare" and putting a lot of emphasis on "Role Warfare". Their goal is make it where running a smaller mech (a scout, or whatever) can be as rewarding as piloting a big ol' assault mech.

Joysticks / HOTAS will be supported. We know at least one of the developers is using a Logitech G940 (and has three LCD displays).

As for game play, it's all online multi-player. They may make some training area where you can learn the controls etc. without it screwing up your record... but AFAIK there is no plan for a single player / campaign mode. They ditched that concept when they couldn't get a publisher for the MW5/MW Rebooted game they started out making. Hence the move to a Free To Play model.

looks good to me, look at the impact marks, they glow as the armor is heated up on inpact. :)

Don't flame for the following, because I have no experience with Mechwarrior or the gameplay elements....

But looking at the video, I don't get it. You have huge, slow-moving targets. It looks to the uninitiated like you just put your crosshairs on each other and keep holding your trigger finger down until one of you falls over. What am I missing!!

You're missing:

  • tactical choices (going head-to-head with a 100-ton Assault-mech that excels at close-in brawling (the Atlas) when you're in a mech set up for a more long-range style of fighting (let's say an Archer, which is more of a missile-boat) isn't very smart etc)
  • heat-management (Everything you do generates heat, some weapons generate hideous amounts of heat and can contribute to overheating your mech to the point of ammo cooking off, shutdowns etc)
  • Role-warfare (some mechs are better at certain tasks, like scouting, sniping and pure slugging it out'ing
  • Manouvering (it's better to get behind a mech and punch it in the back than trying to get through it's front armor, for example)

True, some of the mechs sacrifice speed and manouverability in order to gain toughness (A10 vs F16, for example). Some are a better blend at it than others, some are a jack-of-all-trades while others are specifically designed to do one task. Much like in the world of aviation, your team will have to be able to master everything in order to survive, and only through teamwork will you actually live to fight another day.

Now, just how MWO will turn out is anyone's guess. I'm cautiously optimistic, however, but years of experience with MMO's have bitterly taught me to not get my hopes up TOO much. From what I've been able to tell, the controls of the mechs will be more like what we saw in MW3, with the possibility of controlling legs, torso and arms independently. Just how that will turn out when it comes to using multiple joysticks etc will be interesting to see.

Clustermunitions is just another way of saying that you don't like someone.

I used to like people, then people ruined that for me.

Hehehe... I can see how it could look that way to you, Jinja.

It's waaay more complicated than that. (Not on a par with a DCS title, but there are things to learn).

Weapons fire generates heat. Heat levels have to be managed, of you end up with your mech powering down, or blowing up (or possibly cooking off stored ammunition, causing damage).

There are various weapon types, each with advantages and drawbacks. Mech configurations can be varied... not only on weapons, but armor, engine, electronics, etc.

There are various mech chassis. Some are smaller and faster. Some are bigger, slower, and packing more firepower / armor. There are various roles to fulfill. Choosing an appropriate mech, and configuring it the best way to suit your style will be part of the challenge.

Battles in this version will apparently involve more participants than earlier MW titles. Right now, they are talking about 12 vs 12.
