Sel94 Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 I'v been looking around the new file structure in DCS world and I found some things that may be useful to know in the future. Basically, I'm wondering if there are new ways to add skins to aircraft. The first way is in 'DCS World/Bazar/(aircraft)/(skin)'. This is not for all aircraft skins, but for all the P-51 skins folders, in addition to the 'description' file(that was the only file there in other DCS games), there is also all the skin files in the folder. I'm wondering if we can just put the skin files there now instead of the '/temptextures' folder(or the other place that I forget). The second way is in 'DCS World/Mods/aircraft/(aircraft)/skins'. To me that sounds like a place where you would place new skins. If you have any info about this, thanks. Can't wait for the template to come out:thumbup:
cichlidfan Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 (edited) You never had to put them in temp textures. For A-10, I always put them in the folder(s) where the stock skin files were located then added the path statements to the graphics.cfg. As long as the graphics.cfg contains the correct path, either will probably work equally well. The template is here btw. Sel94 Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 Oh thanks, I didn't know it was out! And yes, that was the way I couldn't remember, I'm just wondering if with their new file structure, there is a new way...well I guess I'll find out tomorrow testing some new skins.
Grimes Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Additionally, it appears you can just leave the texture files within the specific folder of the livery you are creating without having to edit the graphics.cfg. It seems like the majority of the P-51 skins are setup like this. The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world. Sel94 Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 Yes, that was the first thing I was asking about, is it confirmed you can do that? Again, I'll test it tomorrow.
Grimes Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Well the address you had might be incorrect. For the one you listed it looks like it has to do with the cockpit model and textures. whereas with : "Bazar/liveries/(Aircraft)/(Skinname)" you can place the files within the the specific folder and as long as description.lua points to the files, it will work. But yeah, it appears to have been a feature that might have been introduced with A-10C as a few of the A-10 liveries are setup that way. Sel94 Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 Oops yeah I wrote the wrong address, you're right. Ok, well thanks this new way will keep things a little more organized.
speckfire Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 As Grimes mentioned, there is no need to edit the graphics.cfg file to add skins in DCS world, BS2 or A-10C. All you need is to place the dds textures in the DCS World/Bazar/liveries/(aircraft)/(skin) and edit the description.lua file to reflect your skin names. Make sure you change the "true" at the end of each line identifying your texture name in the lua file to false. That will tell the program to look for the actual skin in the directory you put it in. Speed is life !!!
ED Team Wags Posted May 10, 2012 ED Team Posted May 10, 2012 Great new P-51D skins being created everyday. Looking forward to seeing these in my game install. :) Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/wagmatt Twitch: wagmatt System: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3729544#post3729544

flyingscotsman Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Hi guys, Ok I've downloaded DCS World, Have my ka-50 an DCS-A10 working But my old skins have disappeared I have read the above, put the Flying Razorbacks skin folder, from the DCS-A10(that I had) Into DCSWORLD/Bazar/liveries/A10C/DCS A-10C Flying Razorbacks. I have found the description file, but it looks the same as the others and yes it's 'true' at the end of each line....so it should work! What have I done wrong? Thank you - flyingscotsman
joey45 Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 (edited) try 'false'.. Do the skin file names match what's in the description file.? flyingscotsman Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Thank you Joey45 try 'false'.. Do the skin file names match what's in the description file.? Right we're almost there, turns out I used a skin that never worked properly, always went bright orange! However it appears and that's half the battle. NO idea why the lua file should be the wrong way rough, but I now know where & roughly what I'm looking at. THANK YOU sir flyingscotsman
flyingscotsman Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 I changed the lua as you suggested, it appeared! with the incorrect skin, but that's my fault for using the wrong file, I'll do it again with another one and Im sure it'll work, thank you, So I just make the change in the DCS World, which is the master folder and it should work, thank you again for the swift reply flyingscotsman
flyingscotsman Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 The plane's there...the skin is not Hello again, I did as suggested and changed the true's to false, however although the new skinned aircraft appears in the list on the mission editor of A-10, the skins are replaced by bright orange skin...for three separate attempts with three separate skins downloaded. Also, where it mentions in other areas that we should put the dds. files that are provided with other skins, i.e. the SimHQ No logo, a free training skin provided by a sim magazine. The dds. files are supposed to be put in the world/A-10C, folder....I cannot paste into that folder. This has only happened I think, after the installation of DCS World. Has anyone else got this problem? Thank you David
joey45 Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Could I possibly have a look at the skin in question?? flyingscotsman Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Orange a10 Hi again, This is a copy, attached, of the screen. I am putting the folder in c:/Program files/ DCS World/Bazar/Liveries/A10C/23tfw by Tom Weiss Description is currently True for as I have had trouble with DCS World in that it will not allow me to change the file in the game. I have been copying the description to another folder, editing it, and putting it back. Does not seem to have worked thank you flyingscotsman
joey45 Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Where is the graphic.cfg located please ? You don't need to edit the CFG file. flyingscotsman Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Hi Badger 66, I followed the instructions in Tom Wiess's download and have tried to add the one liner to the graphics file, but I am denied the access. VFSTexturePaths { path = ".\\Bazar\\TempTextures"; path = ".\\Bazar\\World\\textures\\23rd TFW Tigers Europe1 by Tom_Weiss"; Just taken the graphics file out to another folder, edited it, with the above ANDI IT WORKS...!! Thank you Gents for your assistance, Its been a real bind all day, but thank you for your assistance. I've moved so many files around and I've probably thought I'd already done this. This is not going to be fun to add all the others, I was going to ask if they have to be duplicated in each of the games, i.e. ka-50 skins into ka-50 too, but that seems to have answered it. Thank you flyingscotsman.....you gotta admit, the orange is gross 1

It worked with my first install of A-10 , but them I couldnt get it to work anymore ..... will try this later when I get home . Thanks for the suggestion :) +1 P.S. does it matter that the edit line doesnt apear on the one line ?
badger66 Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 You don't need to edit the CFG file. Why does Tom Weiss say you have to with his skins ? Why is it there seems to be several ways to install a skin . Heater includes an install exe , but with Tom's you have to edit the graphics file ? I asked Tom to make the 81TFW skin , which he was kind enough to do , and Ive been gutted that I havent been able to install it in World , cant wait to get home !!!
joey45 Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 That was the old way. In DCS it is alot easier. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Mortifa Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 What is the new way of changing skins? My default P-51 is all silver, and it looks nice, but I would rather have a better looking plane. I have followed this thread and looked at the files, but am a little nervous about messing with files I am not sure of. Thanks for the help. Fate is inexorable...
Sel94 Posted March 30, 2013 Author Posted March 30, 2013 What is the new way of changing skins? My default P-51 is all silver, and it looks nice, but I would rather have a better looking plane. I have followed this thread and looked at the files, but am a little nervous about messing with files I am not sure of. Thanks for the help. Do you mean simply changing what skin is used on your aircraft in a mission? You can find that in the mission editor. Have a plane selected, then click on the small square icon that brings you to payload.(Located around the right side of the screen, and about middle-ish height, there is a row of them). Now all you have to do is select what skin you want to use in the drop down menu located near the bottom right. (Unfortunately you will not actually be able to view the skin) If you want to actually know how to create your own skins and put them in DCS, I can explain that too in a longer post. 1
