159th_Viper
I seriously doubt the authenticity of that vid. Be that as it may, there also purports to be a vid that caught the dual-launch missile trails of the S-1 that took the F4 down. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Pyroflash
It kind of sounds like small arms fire in that video. That and the fact that I can see nothing either fired, or being fired upon. If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.
HiJack
I am reading on news that the flight was at 200feet, there are also youtube videos of the incident but I cant make out the airplane tough you can hear the AAA firing and the people pointing almost horizontally (presuming they show the plane) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zofoEWJWeJE I hope the pilots are OK but what the hell were they doing flying such an aggressive route? showing off for themselves or showing off for Turkey? That video must be this incident: Bulent Arinc, Turkey's deputy prime minister, said on Monday that Syrian troops had also opened fire on a rescue plane searching for the pilots who were shot down on Friday. VFA41_Lion
I didn't know automatic rifles and small arms made a relatively large muzzle flash and dust cloud popping up? sungsam
No offence, but I don't recognize any ZSU-23 firing. The video looks like an antiship invention exercise. :noexpression: DCS F16C 52+ w JHMCS ! DCS AH64D Longbow !
sungsam
While we can all speculate about downed F-4 mission, one ting is for sure, Downed F-4 was on a military mission and, from what I know, did not ask for permission to enter Syrian airspace. Actually it was there to recon recently established Russian installations on territory. :smilewink: DCS F16C 52+ w JHMCS ! DCS AH64D Longbow ! sungsam
It is, especially when you fly at 200 ft ASL. BUT, do not expect for enyone to admit it. Rumors exist of F4 been intercepted by S-300. EtherealN
Probing SAM defences are not something you necessarily do "for future invasion". It's something you do in order to inform yourself. (I'd say any country not doing this should have it's security establishment sacked.) Sweden spent the better part of the cold war probing soviet air defences, but it's not like Sweden was planning to invade the Soviet Union. ;) (That would have been a hilarious failure. :P ) (Though we did have some plans in place where we would use the nukes we had in development on russian harbors if things turned hot and we were getting invaded, in order to disable their supply lines.) And of course, one can do these probes in order to get information to trade with foreign intelligence, something sweden also did. (We "sold" information to the US as part of a deal where they would intervene should we be invaded.) Still sounds weird to me...you have no stored energy to defend againts a missile, and you are exposed to every SAM system, even shorad... its not like you can mask yourself with terrain over sea. Read carefully... lateral scan radar equipment on RF-4E... What can you scan from 200ft (60m)? Wouldn't you get better results flying up high? ;) The Valley A-10C Version Revanche for FC
zokier
Daily WTF from Syria (via Al-Jazeera): A Syrian minister said on Wednesday his country's forces may have mistaken the Turkish plane they shot down for an Israeli one. Al-Zoebi said Turkish and Israeli fighter jets were mostly US-made, which may have led the Syrian forces to mistake it for an Israeli jet. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2012/06/20126288759114562.html

sungsam
Recon at 200ft ASL? Sounds weird to me... how much can you recon from that altitude? It's 200 ft ASL (Above Sea Level). This is during the penetration faze with feet wet (above sea flight). Assuming that you have to remain unnoticed until recon area (common practice) then you gain proper altitude for recon ops.. Thats my speculations. The sad news are that they scaling the incident. Both Turkey and Syria are deploying land forces on their common frontiers. Then there is the Russian factor on Syria ... Situation is becoming complicated ! :( No Good Edited June 29, 2012 by sungsam DCS F16C 52+ w JHMCS ! DCS AH64D Longbow !
winz
I doubt that you'll remain unnoticed over a flat area (sea). If Turks were able to track its own plane from Cyprus, why would they think Syrians woudln't be able from shorter distances?...it doens't make any sense. AFAIK the plane was equipped with a RWR, so they most likely had indications that Syrians knew about them. Not to mention that a steep climb over enemey territory doesn't sound like a wise idea to me. I agree with you, the incident is turning into a muscle-flex competition. sungsam
You have a point but I doubt eather for higher altitude. Anyway there is no data efficiency for secure conclusions I guess. The Russians are delivering to Syria some Mil Mi-25, 3 warships full of personel and equipment at Syrias Tartus port, as long as 2 Landing warships Nikolaï Filtchenkov and César Kounikov of Alligator class, with 425 Marines embarked fully armored. sungsam
I'm afraid that would be Greek to you :D But it is based on reliable magazine /news site specialized on defence matters. http://www.defencenet.gr In the mean time - Kurdish forces are joining up Syria - Turkish political cyrcles blame Rusian escort destroyer "Admiral Çapanenko" of class Udaloy II to be the one intercepted F4 and not Syrian Air defences ! - (R71) Charles de Gaulle carrier will join up with USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) carrier (approx 2 weeks from now) to enforce a no-fly-zone above Syria. Both carriers have 100 aircrafts aprox. I can predict an intensive Russian reaction.
