Oculus Rift and DCS World Discussion

Hello, the TrackIR reference (within parenthesis) was made to illustrate the fact that IR camera tracking had problems on it's own and I was asking if those issues were not existing with Oculus Rift's tracking system which is using the same kind of technology. I think I was clear enough on that.

Anyway, for the sake of clarity I will reformulate the questions:

Did anyone using Oculus Rift had any problems with the Oculus Rift tracking system regarding:

- Multiple Oculus Rift users in the same room?

- Light interference that would cause problems to the Oculus Rift tracking system (which happens to be of infrared type and thus possibly subject to interference from other light sources such as sun and/or artificial lights)?

Thanks

My post was relative to your question and it still is.

You: "Does A have the same problem as B?"

Me: "Well the problem that you mention with B has solutions"

You: "Reread [i.e. your comprehension is lacking] the post, this has nothing to do with B, this is a thread about A."

Looks like we got the seeds of a VR squadron happening right here.

I agree with VicX as well. Once you start flying (and driving) with VR, there's no looking back at anything else.

Yeah I feel this way but I completely understand that it isn't for everyone. In a lot of ways playing DCS on a 4K TV is probably how you should be playing Nevada. You can't fully appreciate the level of detail and in Vegas in a HMD. VR players are not mainstream and won't be for a while.

I have this idea that maybe instead of making noises about Vegas and it's lack of suitability for VR .. we could focus on the Black Sea Update instead. It would be great if the Black Sea Update could be undertaken with VR compatibility in mind. I'd be totally happy with a constant 75fps in the Caucasus Map with optimised assets and draw distance for VR HMDS.

The Nevada map certainly taxes a VR user's limits. I can't use it, but the v1.5 map is nearly smooth at 75 all the time (with reduced graphics of course).

I'm curious to know if even ED really is interested in the VR user base and what will become a much larger one in the future. Sure, they have excellent VR support so far. But it is just lip service or do they really care to optimize and improve the VR experience as part of their general development goals?

And some VR User fly-ins would be fun. We host a small 10 user TS server at derekspeare.typefrag.com - password = dsdftw - which would work nicely for it.

Just to give you preview on some hand in game stuff in developing.

Imagine using this hand controllers inside your dcs cockpit with or without VR

Considering the improvement from 1.2 to 1.5, I would say they are serious about VR. Like it or not, once you've flown with VR, there just is no going back. People can talk about the immersion of 4K and 50" TVs, but I don't see how it compares with VR. You just can't beat "looking" like you do in real life. You just can't.

I actually consider myself to be a better pilot then the real thing at that moment. I mean, I'm managing to fly wearing jam jars and my sight is limited to that of a Naked Mole Rat. On top of that there's an earthquake (judder) to contend with, so this has to make me a better pilot.

Don't get me wrong, I am for VR and hope will be playable but all this immersion lose important in moment when you loosing competitiveness against other players in PvP. No one will fly with handicap.

In other hand if this disadvantages will not be much or oposite if VR will give you advantage in some aspects this will increase usage of VR definitely.

I agree. So far this is the closest to a real experience that I have seen. DK2 TM Warthog, Saitek Pedals and a lightning fast rig run at max, DCS 2.0 and A10C.

Out of this world. Who want to fly some form?

i wonder if there will be a "flyinside FSX" type application for DCS...

Flyinside is superb, and I have been fortunate to be using it for some time. DCS has its own VR support. Nothing else is needed.

no, it is needed, i would be great to have a moving kneeboard / checklist, even a floating browser (albiet unrealistic) would be nice to watch youtube video on long flights (even tutorials)

but serious, that floating resizable kneeboard / checklist would be god send..

Yes, I agree - my error. I presumed FI was necessary to enable VR. However, that's not what you were meaning. FI has a butt-load of great features that would be cool to have in DCS. And in that regard, I agree.

No problem!

so you as a VR HMD user, would you also say, "once you go VR 1:1 tracking, you CANT go back to a monitor"?

btw, nice hardware, i have visited your website for racing controller solutions... VERY NICE!

i wish i can afford you items.. im in the process of building a sequential shifter.. (waiting for .06 diameter springs to come in)

Extra features would be nice but I'd be happy to see the existing DCS features work in VR.

Kneeboard but also the optical weapon sights in Combined Arms do not work in VR. No zoom and the overlay does not stay locked to the weapon station orientation.

If I was to prioritise ... I would say fixing the CA sights is the more technically challenging task and work there could unlock a LOT of potentially awesome VR features. Collimated optical telescopic sights in VR. A difficult task but once it is worked out ... lots of applications.

I used to be a staunch 3 screen supporter until I put the Oculus on my head. Since then, I dropped three screens for 1 and use only the Oculus for any gaming. If the game doesn't offer VR support, I don't waste my time with it.

1000% agreement. If it doesn't support OR. I don't have time for it. Haven't touched BMS since

I put on the Rift.

For VR every Modul needs a virtual Pilot with moving Hands in Cockpit or it won't feel real with the Rift.. Your body is not invisible... :-)

i wouldnt mind monitors around me, but i would need a cave like setup or projection, which is not feasible.

i have never never been a fan of trackIR either..

HMD's just make so much sense, particularly for someone like me who just has a small apartment.

i have been building hardware for the last 7 years, and i am putting my money on VR gaming experience!

one day ill afford a DBOX... ;)

btw, its great to hear that a high end hardware authority like you also supporting the VR trend...

DCS World 2.0 Open Alpha Update 1

We are now preparing the first update to the Open Alpha of DCS World 2.0. Highlights of this update include:

Changed MAXFPS to 180

hmmm, i wonder if this is for the rift / vive.... (180 fps = 90fps stereoscopic = rift/vive display spec)

For those of you who want SLI, can you go to the link below and ask NVidia (there's on for ATI as well) and supply the information? Lot of us on Vive/Oculus may fall into the SLI campl

Traditional Sli is not what's needed for VR. In fact it increases latency. We need VRsli which is a different animal. It's part of a set of APIs that form gameworksVR (liquidVR for AMD). It must be implemented by ED themselves.
