Hey, regarding VR and Leap Motion - I just came across this from a few days ago (it gets interesting from about 5 minutes in):

Starting to look a really impressive combination, with the Orion update.

Rig: Asus TUF GAMING B650-PLUS; Ryzen 7800X3D ; 64GB DDR5 5600; RTX 4080; VPC T50 CM2 HOTAS;

...and there goes another 100 bucks on the price :(

I didn't read that from his post at all. huh.gif

In fact he seemed to have echoed my thoughts pretty much exactly - that the Rift, on release, would be ready to go with DCS World and we would hear from the peeps lucky enough to be first in line, to confirm that the not insubstantial investment is going to be well worth the rewards.

I didn't see him blame ED and from the 'talk' he probably assumed (like I did) that ED had some communication with Oculus that would put them 'in the loop' about upcoming changes before they became public releases.

Mind you, I had that impression (and definitely read it from ED via a published interview) about the G940 and that didn't turn out too well, regardless of the end reason.

I'm already considering cancelling my Rift order (due to the cost) and news like this certainly doesn't help as far as confidence goes. Especially considering how long it has taken to sort certain other issues in the past.

We also really don't want to experience problems that may arise each time a software update comes along. That would really be disappointing - and it doesn't matter who the heck's fault it is - the fact that it happens is enough.

My thoughts as well, well said.

Rift screen info

There is a huge amount of information on Reddit now that the NDA is lifted on the Rift.

Something interesting for those of you who made the choice based on Rift's superior optics:

Brightness

"The vive pre messures out to be about 3 times as bright. Here I measured the pre at 390lux, my dk2 at 140lux, and the rift at 130lux."

FOV

"The CV1 is about 80h 90v"

Vive FOV is 92h 105v

Hb3kh2V.png

Flaring

source

qrBimGP.png

"The vive does have some flaring, but it looks a lot like a camera lens flare. The rift looks like a blur across your vision. I personally prefer the Vive's flare over the oculus." (source)

"I didn't notice it on Vive Pre until I looked for it. Have to compare head-to-head, but I'd say it's stronger on Rift." (source)

Unfortunately I haven't found a pic of the Vive flaring (yet).

EDIT: I hope I'm not going to get bashed for posting this - no intentions to gloat, just thought probably not everyone is a r/oculus and r/vive addict like I've become in the last few weeks.

Yeah, there are multiple sources saying that the DK2 is flat out better for high contrast scenes (bright on black such as Elite Dangerous)

That's very disappointing. Oh well, I only care about DCS anyway, but I really don't like this weak Oculus launch, was hoping it'd generate more mainstream hype

Guess it's up to the Vive and PSVR to pull more devs in

Milopapa, I wouldn't consider it gloating, anyway.

I really want to know which one delivers the better experience (or whether it will just be a personal preference thing) so that I don't end up regretting my choice.

Yep, that's why I thought I'd take the time to post. It certainly was an eye-opener for me to learn about these findings.

It's just that there is so much fanboyism going on in the subreddits recently, that one needs to tread lightly comparing the HMDs.

DCS Oculus Items I'd like to see ED attend quickly:

  • v1.3 support - DO NOT force it to be used via the Oculus Store
  • Graphical optimization of the numerous objects to prevent frame rate degradation with VR
  • Clickable cockpits for all planes - the FC ones are not clickable
  • Leap support - for those who want it (I dont care for it)
  • Visible/Ghostable pilot body to help with immersion - has to be somewhat animated, however

-The 1.3 SDK allows not to use Oculus store, but when has ED used it before, Not a problem I assume.

- EDGE is still being tweaked, effects and stuff are being replaced / adjusted. etc.

- I doubt that will happen.

- Same, Doubt ED would support every I/O device that comes out.

- Most have Bodies, hopefully they merge them into planes that dont have them.

I'm going to add the option for cockpit-shadows only to that wishlist, see

http://forums.eagle.ru/forumdisplay.php?f=438

Either way I'm pretty sure you HAVE to install the oculus store, there's a checkbox that you need to enable if you want 3rd party apps to use the rift, so you won't get around that

You, you have to allow other apps, but external programs running VR like FIFSX, ED and LFS run just fine once that slider is set properly to allow it.

One of the reasons I didn't order Vive was being tied to Steam (in any way) - I learned that lesson with the Steam controller.

But if the Rift means being stuck with and pestered by the Oculus store, I may have to rethink.

Is it possible to get Oculus Store yet if you don't have a headset?

I was trying to download it last night to pre-load a few games but they all just had release dates and no prices so I assumed it was up yet?

Not sure if you need a headset or not, but here is the link to the setup tool that installs the store -

https://www.oculus.com/en-us/setup/

I think you can skip the headset setup wizard at the start and then the store should load. You can definitely add devices once the store is open so don't see why you can't start buying/downloading apps before your HMD arrives.

This guy describes the process of getting going and does a good review.

I'll be watching his Vive review, too - but I have bought two pieces of hardware based on this guy's reviews, which turned out just like he described them and so it looks like I'll be happy with my Rift!

*note: He is using a GTX970 and describes how well it copes.

Hence, the display case. It isn't worth selling (figuring the pawn shop paid no more than half of their asking price) and it will be fun to compare it with the hardware that we will, probably, be using in just few years. :)

You should get the DK2 at the very least, but the DK1 will give you some really rough initial impressions. The DK2 is very useable with DCS and would be the bare minimum for VR.

Still can't wait but couldn't agree more with this article:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2016/03/29/when-is-a-launch-not-a-launch-when-its-the-oculus-rift/#2ca7182c74a8

Basically states the dilemma I'm in and probably most of us. Only difference was I pre-ordered and had no issues, confirmation email sent 4 minutes after the site went live. Had my March ship date and now all I see is TBA. I got an email back from a support ticket yesterday just saying my order was confirmed.

For all I know I'll be in the September ship. Something tells me that all the dates we received on our initial confirmation are lost in cyberspace forever, hopefully I'm wrong.

Just tried forcing timewarp in various rift apps by limiting fps

This does not solve general poor performance. It helps if your fps drop for a moment, but it definitely does not help if your fps are constantly too low. Obviously not as bad as juddering (which makes me feel sick instantly), but still looks wrong and actually gave me nausea after some time

Hopefully the DCS VR update boosts performance when looking at cities and such, otherwise I guess most people will have to upgrade to pascal

Brixmis I'm sure both Rift and Vive are going to be epic.

I am reading all the reddit comments but I think this guy sums up where my thoughts are right now fairly well:

Agree completely ;)

Felt that way about a few things over the last 5 or so years.

PS - actually, most of my fears regarding VR concern myself and not the kit. Having said that, it is quite a big bill for me, personally (on a pension), so I have to make sure I know I what I'm getting, too.

It's not a gpu problem it's a cpu problem you just described. Object count and a single threaded evolving engine is to blame. Pascal won't fix it.
