Oculus needs to realize the Prime Consumers that are gonna buy this are the Flight Sim Enthusiasts, and Racing Sim Enthusiasts.

While they believe people playing First Person Shooters will be their #1 Customers.

I think they are wrong.

Why?:

Oculus Allows you to virtually insert yourself into the environment.

1. First Person Shooters Require Walking/Running

vs Flight/Racing Sims, where you are Sitting Down, and the only movement you need to look around the environment is to move your head, rotation wise or positional wise. you dont need to have keymaps for walking/running.

The motion of walking and not actually standing will make some people sick, just as the tracking in DevKit 1 does to some extent.

Even though Flight/Racing Sims arent a top Tier AAA Genre Like Shooters.

iRacing, DCS, FSX, Prepar3d, rFactor, etc etc Alone is Over a Billion Users.

Most of us have already spent a good deal of $$ on Peripherals for our systems, so another $300 for a 1:1 tracked 6DoF head mounted display is nothing. It would be cheaper than my 3 Screen Eyefinity Expansion cost, and I'd be able to run games with out having to dump another $500+ into a Beefy GPU.

2. Integration, How Many First Person Shooters actually have 6DoF Headtracking? Outside of ArmA/DayZ?, How Many of the top tier titles?.

There will prolly be more users playing Rollercoaster Tycoon w/ Oculus Rift than Shooters.

-Why is Controller to Walk + trackIR to look around not an issue?

Because with Track IR, you're not inserted into the environment, you still have fixed scenery around you and around your screens, when you put a VR Headset on those fixed scenery objects are gone.

Hi guys.

can those of you using the rift, let me know what settings you use?

i learned that the beta version of DCS world has "stereo" support.

yet it looked weird and when zooming in and out there were glitches.,

then i read on this thread about the programm NTHUSIM

still waiting for the activation, but can anyone let me know about their experiences?

what would be the best settings ?

i realy don't believe that SimFan's will be the prime customers, because there to much normal (shooter, rpg) players out. But if will we get a highprice premium version with extreme high resolution and dpi the sim'ers will be the mainpart of premium customers

Don't give them ideas, this sim'er is going to find it hard enough to spend $300, lol.

I guess if they're only going to do a "low" res version anyway, then there's no harm in asking them to also do a high res premium version but I'd rather they just made a single high-res model and sold it to everyone (including me) for $300 :)

One of our members misoswan, recommends this setting for oculus.

Can somebody post their Nthusim settings to go along with this lua file?

The separation is all wrong for me. I had DCS working well in 2d but don't know where to start when introducing stereo lua script. What numbers do I adjust in the lua file to change the separation?

$300 is chump change when I look at the total amount I've put into my rig for "Sim" purposes...

$800 for Fanatec Steering System, $400 for CH Controllers, some new some used + a spare set. $500 for 2 extra Monitors for Eyefinity. Future Purchase of R9-290X

if I switch to Oculus for DCS/iRacing, I wont have to run 3 screens wide, which means I Wont have to upgrade to a R9-290X anytime soon, as I Can Run DCS very well at 1080p/1200p with what I have now.

Running 3 screens limits details and FPS to 30 FPS in DCS. *well about 45, but for VSYNC purposes, 30. It's very playable the way I have it now, but why would I ignore a opportunity to go 1:1 tracking with a HMD.

$300.... is insignificant when I look at my plans to buy:

$600 R9-90X

$215 2x eVGA DP++ HUB +

$600 3x more ASUS Screens

$75 6x DP->DVI Cables

I thought I'd ask. Is the "next-gen" Oculus Rift the "new" version that's due to come out in early 2014? I'd love to give it a try and order one. But I can wait a month (or two, max! :) ) if a newer version is coming out.

found it. " Rift Dev version: 1280x800. In the consumer version which is still in development, the expected resolution is 1920x1080."

Thanks

Before consumer version Oculus expect do deliver DevKit2 which should have better screens than correct one.

Thanks. Will have to wait for the updated version. Not sure I can wait though! :music_whistling:

It will be worth it. I have had the DK1 version for quite some time now and if you really want to use it for DCS, a higher specced DK2 would will be well worth the wait, I for one can't wait for it either, but I think I don't have a choice ;)

The reason I decided to order DK1 yesterday is because they are saying the consumer version wont be out until at least the fall, which really means a couple of weeks before xmas.I also just read somewhere that DK2 will be released a month or two before the consumer version.

So realistically DK2 wont be here until October and I'm sure there will be a severe shortage. So in essence its get DK1 now or wait until Dec 2014 for the final version because who is going to buy DK2,then turn around 2 months later and get the consumer rift?

I have heard that the resolution is low,but I'm not really getting this version to play games,I'm getting it for the experience if that makes sense. As far as release dates lets both pray that I'm wrong :D

Out of curiosity, what are folks using to play DCS with RIFT? NThusim or Tridef? It would be fantastic if ED would support RIFT.

Ok, so I set everything up, probably I can't get better with current setup.

I used stereo.lua setup in DCS to render stereo pair, and I used free tool - Oculus Overlay to make screen wrap (NThusim didn't work for me in DCS)

Eye separation in stereo.lua 0.6 (-0.3 and +0.3 for left and right views), 0-for convergence (you shouldn't use any convergence when render for Rift, otherwise images will not match). And tweaked Oculus Overlay to get image of a right size and so on.

I used TrackIR5 for tracking, and HOTAS + rudder pedals for flying.

First I was very happy that everything works now and I don't have nausea from this setup, and everything is in proper stereo. BUT damn the whole experience is crippled because of super low resolution of current DevKit and bad screen in general - color reproduction, pixel smearing... I mean it is awful, you can't read any gauge in Ka-50 or Su-27, you need to zoom in so the gauge occupy huge portion of your vision to read it. And I'm not telling about looking for ground targets.

I did some ground attack mission on Ka-50, and even killed some targets, but as it is now Rift DevKit 1 is useless for DCS. Sure one can experiment but certainly not playable. So now I'm waiting for hi-rez Rift to repeat my investigation on VR DCS. Shouldn't be long now? ;)

already said that like 10 times, lol..

it's good for ED to tweak and get profiles/plugins ready though...

Just ordered the Rift (who was I kidding about waiting - LOL) Actually, the primary purpose will not be for DCS but for something else. But I'm dying to try it out - low res and all!

Hopefully, ED will support it natively.

there's ways to remove the screen door effect.

But DCS needs a higher resolution and faster response led screen.

:( Ah well, waiting game, I guess ... I really want OR to succeed in flight sim application, however it's way to early to take it seriously.

P.S.

Thanks for an honest opinion - lot of guys around here are praising OR even if it's obvious that it's useless in current form for DCS and flight sims in general.
