New "Sim" or whatever you might like to call it heading our way.

Its from the same people who made Wings of Prey, so if you ask me, it should be pretty decent, they intend to implement a few hundred aircraft from props to jets and have a huge MMO type online capability when it comes to online gaming.

I have seen a few videos and it looks pretty decent, whether that translates into, "it will be a good game" is a different matter.

But here is the link

Beta spots are open now.

I have a beta key for it. It did not impress me and even as a beta it is full of 'unlocks' that you have to go through to really get a good look at it.

Hmmm, I got an email from them offering beta status cause I own WoP, I didnt take the chance as I cant be bothered with beta'in, but I presumed it was gunna be like WoP but on a much bigger scale.

Not liking the idea of unlocks tho :(

I tried the beta once and wasn't really thrilled... the UI and unlock-"gameplay" were aggravating enough to turn me off at the time. (Maybe I should set it up methodically and try again?)

Yeah, have the beta as well. Unlock-gameplay aside, it's extremely well done, gorgeous and fun.

Looks like it may be using CryEngine 3. Somewhat impressive. Wish DCS would put more into their lighting and world detail.

Played the beta for a while, overall not impressed. Quick and dirty impressions:

It looks and plays just like Wings of Prey. That isnt a good thing. Even with it set to simulation, playng with a HOTAS you can tell this game was made for a gamepad, and mouse/kb setup. See :http://warthunder.com/en/game/features/12/current/ .

Graphics in game are not nearly as pretty as the screenies make them out to be. They are not bad, but not great.

The sounds of guns is totally like a modern FPS. To be fair, I think this will change...if not it WILL appeal to the Call of Duty crowd.

The FM is over-the-top. Take the P-51 out, and try your best to stall it, and even if you do manage to, recovery is simple.

A hit or 2 of gunfire will blow up a ground target as if it was a fuel truck and you hit it with 10 rockets.

The DM seems off. It is like every plane has hitpoints and it doesnt matter where you hit, or get hit, just how many times, and that is a alot of times to get a kill or get killed.

Add the bandwagon "MMO" feature that every PC game comes with these days, and you get that crowd. Yes, its total quake war in the air.

As much as I want a great WWII sim covering all the theatres, this isnt it. I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised, but I wasnt. This game is for the casual gamer that wants to play a FPS using WWII aircraft. The "points" system, the unlocks, the 2 min missions, the flashy icons that flash on your screen when you kill something, the GPS map (even in sim mode), etc. etc. totally ruins it.

This rides the line of simcade way too close to the cade part. Thats not a bad thing, but it isnt for me.

Not for me either but the videos make it look good dosen't it? Must see when they are reviewed by some serious sim site.

I got an invite to the Beta, its just like WOT with wings, you get carried away with progression, it proclaims its free to play (FTP) but the passive encouragement makes it a wallet vacuum, which fast tracks progression and AC development, its a great money spinner for the developers and will be patronized by millions of hyper vigilant teenagers and oldies having a mid-life crisis. The single player missions are okay, but as stated in previous posts here the controls are mediocre, the graphics not to bad, but it isn't really a sim. 10/10 for arcade and a great stealthy means to keep ongoing costs coming out of your wallet. Not really for me. The game on-line environment is also inhabited by some real flunkies that you wouldn't even employ to muck out horse stalls in real life. Cheers...

Well, not really. You can enjoy both sim and arcade, just dont go in expecting WT to be a sim and you might enjoy it....maybe.

Personally, I cant think of a better feeling than flying the Ka-50, yet I would play the crap out of Crimson Skies again.

It's a MMOACG.. Massive Multiplayer Online Aerial Combat game.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Was waiting for this game for a long time, it's still beta and %20 percent of the game but

still filling the gaps from IL-2 Sturmovik - Cliffs of Dover even with its semi-arcade environment.

Looking forward to see you in there,

Its more game than simulator.

Does that mean its not fun. Hell no its bloody good fun.

You're not suppose to comment on it as a live Beta Tester but I would say this:

If you fancy a change, fancy shooting down some aircraft without worrying about the flight model for the literal hundreds of aircraft being perfect and just want some fun then play this.

If you want a simulation of what is possible (within the limits of classified data) fly DCS.

If you want a great FM and WWI fly RoF, If you want a limited civvy sim fly FSX.

If you want real FM, real wind, real atmospherics, real life come fly a real aircraft and see how you get on.

I love comments on it doesn't stall like a P51D, it climbs like a homesick angel unrealistically blah de blah when not many of us here have flown a P51D. I've flown and flown in all sorts, some of them warbirds too and guess what, sims feel (and I mean feel) nothing like real life, even the ones that reckon they are "proper" sims cant get close to even flying a C172 in real life never mind a priceless warbird :)

When you take into account that War Thunder doesn't claim to be a reference sim on one type, never mind the hundreds that are in it, you may find your perspective changes on what is a good "game".

True on most of your points, and I agree.

But remember, War Thunder is the same people that made Wings of Prey. You know the Wings of Prey that used the IL2 in the name. They were touting it as a sim with simple controls as an option and pulled more folks from original IL2 with the name, that were disappointed in lack of even moderate simulation. (i.e. missions could not progress if you didnt have unlimited bombs, due to 30 objectives needing to be destroyed by a flight of 3 planes)

You have to understand the large gap between quality WWII sims. The hype and utter letdown that was/is Cliffs of Dover led some people to put hope into WT. There is a large group (me included) wanting a modern WWII sim, and now there is WT, and others like Damage Inc. At least the later doesnt not claim to have "simulation" settings.

If you read my view on WT, I said it can still be enjoyed by folks, just not me. I wish they would not straddle the arcade/sim fence to grab the largest market they can. Some people are going to think the "simulation" setttings are just that, and be disappointed, when they find out it isnt even close. If you go into it knowing its an arcade type shooter you just have some fun.
