cltmmm Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 New F-18 cockpit for 2015... They can now play DCS World while flying... http://defensetech.org/2012/09/17/boeing-builds-super-hornet-digital-displays-for-possible-2015-upgrade/
Slayer Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 But can it play Crysis? I'm sure Microsoft pushed this to Boeing so it can run their Metro UI..... Call me old fashioned but isn't it stupid to put all your eggs in one basket? I mean where's the redundancy and backup gauges should that one screen fail. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] System Specs Intel I7-3930K, Asrock EXTREME9, EVGA TITAN, Mushkin Chronos SSD, 16GB G.SKILL Ripjaws Z series 2133, TM Warthog and MFD's, Saitek Proflight Combat pedals, TrackIR 5 + TrackClip PRO, Windows 7 x64, 3-Asus VS2248H-P monitors, Thermaltake Level 10 GT, Obutto cockpit
Kenan Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 ^^That was my first thought as well. Relying too much on electronics can never be a good thing. But then again, I'm not an expert in those matters. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Commanding Officer of: 2nd Company 1st financial guard battalion "Mrcine" See our squads here and our . Pyroflash Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 (edited) Likely there are multiple backlights, and multiple actual displays and outputs in the event of a single system failure. This is how it works in my Cirrus anyways, and I doubt that it would be less stable for something that is supposed to be flying into combat. Also, I sincerely hope that they get this upgrade. Especially with the integrated distributed sensors that they are talking about. This generation is proving to be interesting. HiJack Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 If you fly that F/A-18 you could even play doom I think :P
3instein Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 "Boeing officials boast that a pilot can puncture the display’s screen with a screwdriver and expect it to keep working." I remember a while back someone saying you couldn't scratch a CD with a nail/screwdriver, Saw where that went. :music_whistling: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]Keep the faith AMD PHENOM II X 4 955be @3.2 GHZ | ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO mb | Corsair XMS3-8GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory | Nvidea GTX 580 GDDR5 GPU | CNPS9900 NT cooler | Corsair HX850W psu | Seagate Barracuda 500GB HD 300 MBps - 7200 rpm | WIN 7 64bit | 32" HD LCD TV | 5.1 surround sound | wireless keyboard and mouse | Saitek x45 hotas.
aaron886 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 IMO, this thread belongs in Military and Aviation.
marcos Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Excellent cockpit. Best design I've seen, I think. Is it actually a touchscreen or does it just look like one? But can it play Crysis? Not if it purchased it before EA Download changed to Origin.
Pyroflash Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Excellent cockpit. Best design I've seen, I think. Is it actually a touchscreen or does it just look like one? It is a full function multi-touch display. There are no LSK's similar to how the F-35's pit is setup, except the F/A-18E's version is much larger. If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

marcos Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 LOL. They could probably do some commodities trading while playing DCS.
Napa Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 "Boeing Military Aircraft President Christopher Chadwick said Boeing expects U.S. and coalition navies involved with the F-35 program to seek F/A-18 upgrades to back fill against delays in the Joint Strike Fighter program." What if there are no delays in JSF program and the F-35 is delivered ahead of schedule? thaisocom Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I've read in Air International July issue which has special article on Super Hornet. Boeing has claims that even the screen is partially destroy, pilot can still utilize the remaining section of the screen. Pretty impressive, if it's true that is. Still, it would be nice if they will provide analog gauges as a backup system. Jona33 Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 There's delays in the JSF? Really? I didn't know... :D Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing
marcos Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 What if any large military project was delivered ahead of schedule... ever?

59th_LeFty Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 What if any large military project was delivered ahead of schedule... ever? What if any large military customer was asking for the same needs through the time of the research, and would want their toys in reasonable time? [sIGPIC]http://www.forum.lockon.ru/signaturepics/sigpic5279_1.gif[/sIGPIC] I could shot down a Kitchen :smartass:
marcos Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 What if any large military customer was asking for the same needs through the time of the research, and would want their toys in reasonable time? Touche. Or if test pilots mention things present in the first year, rather than waiting until the last 6 months. Or what if the currency exchange rates and inflation stayed predictable over a 15-20 year lifecycle. Then it could come in on budget too.:D
tflash Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 What if any large military project was delivered ahead of schedule... ever? You mean like the Super Hornet? Which was delivered on time & on budget, and since has been saving operating costs while excelling in a variety of combat missions? :music_whistling: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
marcos Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 You mean like the Super Hornet? Which was delivered on time & on budget, and since has been saving operating costs while excelling in a variety of combat missions? :music_whistling: And the Astute submarine to be fair. Very rare though.
Stickers Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 That's cool but what kind of DRM does it have? Do you have to have a constant online connection to fly?
