Feature request: Paratroopers.

The Hog, 25T and Shark excel at Troop support. Our current ME makes the development of ground support missions laborious but not impossible.

Give us the ability to drop a number of paratroopers from AI Planes.

Think of it. Create a mission with a city battle or front line. a C 17, CH47 or UH 60 are tasked to take off from a friendly base, be escorted to the front and deliver thie "Ordinance" of paratroopers. The troopers float down and a firefight automatically ensues with the ground forces whereby the player assets have to protect them.

The addition gives us an escort mission role in addition to an unpredictable CAS responsibility once they start hitting the ground.

I know this can be simulated but dang... I'd love to see the chutes dropping down and being randomly distributed according to the windage.

.... and this doesnt even tap the imagination for airborne artillary and Mech units...

According to Wikipedia:

USA:

Paratroopers jump from a variety of aircraft. Current high performance aircraft include the C-130 series, C-17 and C-5 (this is not an exclusive list, but only the most common jump aircraft). Most jumps are from the side doors of the aircraft using an alternating door technique. However, sometimes jumps are designated tailgate, which is where the tailgate is lowered and the jumpers exit the aft end of the aircraft. Some Aircraft are designated tailgate only, as in the CASA-212, CH-47 and CH-53. Jumping from helicopters like the CH-47, CH-53, and UH-60 are possible, but are not very common except in Special Operations where they are utilised almost exclusively.

That would be awesome, I'd love seeing that drifting slowly over the battlefield, tracers and such sweeping across... It'd be a great setpiece for some later missions in a campaign.

I had to mute the video and put on "It's Raining Men" though.

Sorry MDL couldn't resist.

Model the M551 Sheridan so the Herc can airdrop it or LAPES it!

i still want this and am shamelessly bumping the thread to gauge if interest levels have increased ...

please please... how awesome for mission designers to have this option... just imagine a seal team insert or a large scale invasion along the inguri.

can you imagine a mission design simple enough to only ask the player to prep the LZ and try to secure survivability of 90% of the troop "group" until they reach their waypoint 1?

the possibilities are numerous for new missions and immersion with this one feature addition.

as soon as those troopers land - tracers galore..

it would be amazing to watch from my lofty perch.

Ironic. Matt worked on Janes F-18 which had paratroopers but they didn't show up on the land after the jump, only in the air jumping from the aircraft. In DCS we have the aircraft and the ability to make them show up on land but not jumping from the aircraft :)

In Aces high they have paratroopers in missions. You drop them and they become AI running for the designated enemy command center. You have to get a certain amount of troopers inside the command center to win the mission.

Neat.

I would like also to see controllable infantry in DCS. As we have the terrain engine now, it makes no sense as there are no variety and masks where to hide, protect and progress. Maybe in the future, after we see the EDGE engine capabillities.

I suppose i will able to solve this problem.

Not easy, but possible. Needs several LUA and some 3D works.

Unfortunately my graphics card died two weeks ago, (still waiting for a new one) consequently I proceed slowly (on my old PC) with ALS ligths, F-16 and multi-layered cloudiness but after these I'll have a look at this paratrooper thing. ;)

How many paratroopers able to carry/drop C-17, C-130, IL-76, AN-26 ?

HungaroJet,

The C-130E/H drops 64 jumpers, the C-130J-30 drops 90 and the C-17 drops 102. Another thing that needs fixing is to allow C-130 and C-17 aircraft to fly in multi-ship formations and not just single-ship. As I posted earlier, it would be awesome to be able to airdrop a Heavy Equipment M551 Sheridan or LAPES one that in turn could be operated inside Combined Arms!

Cheers,

TY

Maybe i will able to fix this issue also but unfortunately problems will not come in the air but near runways (TO & approach) when huge birds will be too close to each other on same runway. (They will want to land in close formation like Fighters)

Unfortunately, AFAIR formations on runway are strict by DLL so only AI start in the air or AI start from parking place will be feasible. Formation Take Off - AI start from runway not.

I guess landing will be the biggest problem...but i will need to check.

They can and do go lower, and at night. I think 600 feet, and I'm quite sure they can do lower than that as well.

Nice idea, but it would be a possible frame rate killer.

Now if we could control the canopy as a player, that would be mega!

IL2 permitted paratroopers but the main problem was a really big FPS loss. It was nearly impossible to play with this great immersive option :(

Maybe with our better configurations would it be possible now ?

I made a little mission next week with Ka-50 in support of an air assault on an Airbase and I was a little disappointed not to find paratroopers to make a Tombouctou like mission ;)

This by the way, would be an acceptable work-around. Let the objects jump out in their parachutes then disappear, ala Janes FA-18. We can use the mission editor to spawn the troops on the ground and go from there. In fact I have already built missions this way, with an IL-76 flying over a designated drop point, followed by some radio chatter, followed by the appearance of Russian paratroopers in the open field below -- but of course I am lacking all the chutes in the sky to really complete the illusion.

Sure it would be better if this was preprogrammed someway, so that a squad jumped and a squad then appeared on the ground, but like I said, it is a better than nothing option.

One thought -- could we not just create a mod of some parachuted bomb or illumination flare or something. Might be a good thread to start up over in the mods section. Since I lack any kind of mod experience, I would be able to ask the question and that's about it -- doubt I'd even understand the responses I'd get.
