Yes, this topic will always come back. I think it's just part of the territory and not a huge deal as long as people remember to let cooler heads prevail instead of launching into this 'vs' stuff.

How do you grow the MP community?

AFAIK you cant force it: most offline players are likely not reading this forum to begin with.

A bit late to be asking these questions... multiplayer environment of the series has been decaying for years...

True.

Official servers would be nice. :)

On the refreshed debate: I can very well understand both sides.

There are many reasons to lock a server for training or having fun with some friends. And there are many reasons for opening a server for newcomers and non-squadron-players.

What I don't understand and what this doesn't explain:

Why do there have to be 10-15 EMPTY and LOCKED servers all the time? Some of them running for DAYS on the same mission.

And while we're at it: Why do 4-6 open servers all run the same mission? :D

For MP community to remain healthy requirements are:

1. Stable MP netcode.................. not present

2. Balance of sides ................... not present

3. Good community managment .................. 50/50

4. No major bugs ................ DCS is currently like ant colony :)

and most importantly

5. DEDICATED SERVERS!!!!

For MP community to remain healthy requirements are.....

You forgot the most important:

6 - Attitude.

Yes, there are a lot of issues at present. These issues are however proactively being worked on. In the interim, if everybody just adopted a more positive attitude and in doing so focus on making the best of what we have got at present, all the while working towards improving all aspects which are lacking, as opposed to moaning and focusing on the negatives, then the MP environment will slowly get back to where we were and surpass that even - of that I have no doubt whatsoever.

Oh yes,

7 - Hyperlobby.

I agree on the dedicated servers.

But the netcode is very playable - not perfect! - but playable.

Same is for the bugs.

And Balance of Sides?

You must be talking about LockOn. LockOn was a Head-To-Head gameset. DCS never was: Neither the A-10C nor the KA-50 were designed for air-to-air-combat. So it would make at least 2 other modules to give yourself an opponent.

DCS is about teamworking against the environment. I bet this was also a major reason to start another US-fighter. And yet, with CA you still have the opportunity to play against each other. ;)

IMHO an online-logbook, stats & trackers would be a much more interesting start than a set of 2 fighters. And it could even eliminate the teamkiller-issue.

Do you fly on open servers as well?

[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

VFS choice as to whether a server is locked or not and for specific reasons. It is no ones place to question that, unless it is you that pays for extra licences and hardware and connectivity.

I'll reiterate what you neg repped me for, no one here has criticised VFS servers for choosing not to open up, and no one has told them they have to for any reason. So why do VFS squadrons keep posting here with negative comments. DCS doesn't revolve around VFS and there are more servers in DCS than just VFS ones.

The point is you don't have to have a locked server to fly serious, that is the only point.

No, I host occasionally for my group of DaDs, we wont have a dedicated server until ED releases their dedicated server as hosting on my machines only allows for a few of us to fly. When the dedicated server is released we hope to have an open server as we have in other games.

And pretty much my feeling on this whole discussion is until there is an official dedicated server option out there its all just jibber jabber.

Hm, I'm not sure it's that easy.

If there is no way out delivered by ED, just waiting most certainly won't make things better.

Not sure I get your meaning, but ED did state that they were working on a Dedicated Server tool, although no estimated completion time, it is coming, and I can only imagine the onslaught of FC players will increase the demand.

Waiting is our only option at this point. Thanks those that put in the effort for a open server now and dont worry about the rest... or do it yourself of course.

It is interesting to note that the OP came onto LYNX when we opened it without a password, jumped into a Red Slot and immediatly headed south and took out an A-10C that was blue, and had spent 30 minutes getting into position.

However, had he of read the Mission Briefing he would have noticed that in this scenario (NATO+), Blue and Red were on the same side, the Mission Brief made this perfectly clear.

Not wanting to turn this into a flame war of anykind, the fact is that because he had not read the Mission Briefing he was unaware of the Missions Scenario, Its aims and specific Tasks for Specific Aircraft. Had he of done, he would have known that he had a SEAD Task.

This..................is what 'sometimes' happens when servers are not passworded and is the risk that we run when doing so. There is always one, but sometimes, this is all it takes to screw the whole lot up.

MP is about co-ordination. If it's a furball you want then please...........create your own server.

Bottom Line? If a server is not passworded, it does not mean that you shouldn't read the Mission Brief or tasks. They............are extant, passworded server or not.

We have been trying VERY hard to keep our doors open at the firehouse server... but between various exploits being used by smacktard dbags and the freelancing that tyger talks about above this post it's getting harder and harder to justify.

To keep the doors open, server hosts NEED to be proactive in blocking the meatbags by sharing ucids of offending clients. With the coming of slmod 4.2 bantables, I'm hoping that we can just openly share bantable entries...

As mentioned in a couple other threads, ucid's prior to about november 1 were in a different format and not unique. Now, they are unique- but those of us who had lists pre-nov 1 are out of luck and starting from square 1.

We NEED to get buy in from the broader community if this type of initiative is going to work and servers are going to have a chance to keep the doors open.

Please, IM me if you're interested in participating in this type of cooperative initiative. We can then share some ideas and get this ball rolling.

To the OP... we're working hard to keep the server open but without cooperation it's a very frustrating and difficult endeavour.

To be fair to the OP, he did apologise, fairplay.

Just Ironic that he started this thread of a subject brought up again and again.

I dont think banning via UCID is really the way forward ENO to be honest. Mistakes are made frequently by peoples, new and experienced alike and it would be easy to categorise everyone who screws up a little as a constant offender. Not neccessarily the case. The OP for example was informed of his misdemeanour (thats all it is) and then was kicked from the server and banned from TS for 10 minutes (yes he was in TS - again, fairplay.)

Again, the point is that even if the server was passworded, he was in TS. He didn't read the mission so didn't know what was going on. Being in TS however, enables us to ID the offender and speak to them or take action.

But.............................99% of the time the mistakes that are made are minor, although i did have a dickhead who took off and then gun runned me whilst i had just finished starting up the A-10C - knob.

Point is, permanent banning via UCID is a serious thing that we should not really be thinking about and certainly not for multiple servers via a co-ordinated approach. In 4 and a bit years of ED support and flying their products, i have only EVER came accross 'one' that deserved to be banned forever from every server. one.

Good luck

If you join a server with a dictating admin who says when and where you can fart in the mission briefing, then that server is has douchey admin to begin with - no freedom to fly how you choose is lame. Leave, be kicked, find another server or start your own. Simple as that.

Already poss repped, couldn't agree with you more about the trollfest. I forget how many times this thread has been reborn to be frank.

There is a difference between a 'douche admin' and a mission briefing though mate. come on my server and non comply with the mission briefing and prepare to get kicked. Go into Real combat and not comply with the ROE or Mission perameters, ME's or Scheme of Manouvre and prepare for Disciplianry Action.

This is a Sim and not a game. For those that want a game, well........ARMA is over there somewhere.

Funny you should mention that. It happened to me on your server this mornin. The best part was after i was on fire, one of his sidewinder's had no problem finding it's target. After he took off from the TW!

What about less messing around on open servers and polute it with weird 3rd party programs and poorly personaly modified mods or making it crash on purpose? Im certain servers will open up alot more with better behaviour.
