Have been flying A10c for about 3 weeks now using a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick, keyboard, and mouse. I have found it very frustrating trying to look at the screen while slewing with the keyboard and the keys are just not setup properly with the up key offset from the other 3. I find myself hitting another key many times. Is it possible to assign those tasks to the 4 keys on top of the joystick?

Another question for those with the Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog setup. Did it make it less frustrating using the Thrustmaster setup versus the setup I am using for those that started out with a similar setup as mine?

I have a simple joystick as well. What I did was use modifier keys with my Hat Switch. For example RIGHT CONTROL + Hat Switch UP,DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT is my Trim Up Down Left and Right. LEFT ALT + Hat Switch UP, DOWN , LEFT , RIGHT is assigned to my Slew Functions. Hope you get the idea.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy and I've had both.

To answer your second question, yes having a warthog hotas makes it a huge amount easier to learn and use the controls than a more simple joystick.

I also started on the Logitech Extreme 3DPRO with this sim as well. I actually still use it for BF3. I feel your frustration as I've walked your shoes! I was also at about the 3 week mark when I pulled the trigger and got TIR+TMWH on order.

Yes, do yourself a favor now, and just buy the TM WH. It makes everything significantly easier to use/learn. I refuse to even use the sim without it anymore as it's to frustrating. That and Track IR is a must of course as well.

Without TMWH and Track IR you will be at a disadvantage for user ease of control, enjoyment, learning, and fidelity.

The only problem is you have to 'unlearn' your old habits of what you've mapped stuff to now+keyboard commands, and then relearn the actual controls on the TMWH, but honestly it doesn't take long at all. Once you have the TMWH figured out, you to will guarantee conclude that you wished you had went this route already/sooner.

GET EM!

Before you look at getting a warthog joystick, consider the Trackir. It is much more significant and will change your game and your enjoyment forever.

Here's a vidoe of someone learning to use it in the A-10

Asus Sabertooth P67 Motherboard 2600k CPU, 16 gig DDR3, 1600. Samsung 830, 256 gig hard drive,

GTX780 Video Card, Warthog Hotas, Razer Mamba mouse. Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals. Trackir 5, Verizon FIOS 25Meg Up/Down

My wife just does not understand why anyone would spend $400 to play a game as she calls it. Didn't help matters when she bought the A10C for me, then my old computer would not run the sim, so I had to shell out $350 for a new, custom built computer, then had to fork out another $40 for the joystick. She knows I got a deal on the computer, but is still keeping the purse strings a little tight for now. I'm working some overtime at work, and I can probably convince her that that money should be my play money. Just have to be patient. Thanks to all for the quick reponses.

Well the feel and look of the TM Hotas is just amazing. It is just awesome to apply the force on that stick as it moves quite heavier than the other joysticks because it is not trimmed by spring elements but uses the hall effect (some magnetic behavior). This said it is just so cool to feel the cold steel when you first touch it. It really makes a difference and this being said from a former X52 Pro user which isnt the worst stick after all.

So in my opinion: If you can spend the money, do it but do it after purchasing trackIR.

The center force of the stick is indeed supplied by a spring, but it does not feature a gimbal mechanism, which makes for very smooth travel. The hall effect you mention is used in the sensors, it has nothing to do with the center force of the stick.

Hall sensors measure the magnetic flux and are therefore contactless. This has the advantage of them having practically no degradation through use, additionally, they don't introduce noise when you move them and they have very linear behaviour.

Because it is what you want and are willing to pay for

That would be the same question as: Why spend 25,000 EUR on a new Audi A3? You get a car for half the price.

Arguments like: "It's better technology", "more space", "higher quality", "more fun while driving", etc. will surely come to mind.

Well, the TM Warthog has mostly the same arguments here?! :music_whistling:

Get a track-ir and a X52 pro joystick.. not as flashy as warthog stick, but with modifier(s) you get everything you need at your fingertips while looking around.

I'll answer your "Another question" first... YES!

Turtle... I went through the same process at first, but it only lasted about two weeks. I quickly found out that DCS World, and the DCS A-10C Sim were unmatched in the consumer Combat Flight Sim realm, and I started seriously looking to find a great sim to get into... all the way... and make an honest effort to become an accomplished, knowledgeable and hopefully someday, competitive pilot. The TM Warthog and TIR5 were total game changers for me.

I have spent MANY hours (over 30 hours in the cockpit, on start ups, take offs and landings (in self made "learning missions" not counting tutorial hours) going over every aspect of each step of the learning process, ie, not rushing to start shooting or bombing anything before I have all the essentials completely down first. I've already spent many hours learning this sim, and have many, many more yet to go... but being thorough is starting to pay off. When you start performing actions without thinking to yourself "Ummm... now how do I do that again?" the entire learning curve changes. I've just began my latest adventure into weaponry and combat employment... and it's gonna take a lot of time as well!! That's also where the better quality hardware comes into play.

Take for example a tutorial. When the narration says "Press the TMS up short command", and just below your right thumb is the actual TMS control... well it's pretty much straight forward. Same goes for the BOAT switch, China Hat, trim, slew control... everything becomes easier, more realistic, and much more incredibly immersive, when you have hardware as close as you can get to the "Real Deal". Is the TM Warthog the only way to fly? NO! Many do very well without it, and could crush me with whatever they use. But... if you ever got to sit down at a fast PC, and fly with a TM Warthog, TM Cougars, TIR5 and Saitek Pro Pedals... your DCS A-10C experience would never feel the same again.

As for the wife... sorry buddy... can't help ya there, and won't even consider giving advice in that arena!! :helpsmilie: I have a wife too... they are all very unique to say the least! But... do check for bargain prices online, and also check for people selling "gently used" hardware. The reason I point that out, is that there are many folks out there with deep enough pockets to go "all out" on everything they find interest in, and when the interest fades... they sell their goods and invest in "another" endeavor. I know this to be fact, as I'm a photographer, and have bought $1500 lenses for $800-900 that are "like new", and have little to no real practical use on them.

Lots of other great advice above... just pick what works best for you, your wife and your pocketbook, and ENJOY this amazing Sim!!!

Cheers!

Thanks for all the great advice. I have been following the same path as MatzWarhog. Read, read, read, watch tutorials out the ying yang, go try some of the stuff, fly the training missions over and over again, but some things are still a little frustrating. I belive in practice, practice, practice, and lots of research. The reason I singled out slewing the mavs was that I still have not mastered moving the reticle and keeping it in the Hud. It seems to slide off the side of the Hud and stays there for what seems like forever, then all of a sudden, it shoots across the Hud and I have control of it again. But, afetr I reassigned some of my buttons and used the modifiers as instructed, I can keeep it in the Hud a little better now. It always happens after I fire a mav and turn hard away from the target area to avoid the AAA and sams. I was switching to active pause and cheating a little to clear the areas of the bad stuff. I really do appreciate the help, and this sim is outstanding.

I flew Janes USAF and would almost exclusively try to use the A10 in any missions that allowed it. Then I got Falcon 4.0 and flew hundreds of hours in it. Janes F15 and also Janes WWII. I was an Operations NCO for several years for a National Guard Engineer unit, and there is an air to ground range here at the base. I have watched A10s, F4s, A7s, and F16s do there thing there for years. The A10s have always impressed me the most. I have sat in the tower at the range and watched closeup as the A10s appear out of nowhere and brrrrrrrppppp 2-3 different targets and then disappear behind a hill only to reappear a few minutes later in a totally new area and drop a smoke round right on target, brrrrrrppppp another target or 2 and disappear again. You are so close to the planes, you can see the pilot wave as they pass by the tower. Cool as all get out.
