I like WW2 planes... almost all (italian planes are ugly... sorry :P ) so... me likes teh news.

Slightly O/T, but Italy had some of the best looking aircraft in WWII, which unfortunately didn't survive the war.

I love the P-51 module, even though it doesn't quite fit with as many on these forums. I think the inclusion of WWII aircraft (among other era's) is amazing...even if it's all under one roof. Matter of fact, I think it's amazing it's all under one roof. No other flight sim apart from FSX can you fly a P51, F-15 Eagle and A-10C (all human players) in formation. Hell pepper a few Huey's in there and (from the American perspective anyway) there's 60 years of aviation history under one playable roof....that's cool even if it's not "realistic" in that way many complain it's not.

I believe the step process (as lengthy as it seems) is the only sustainable way to move forward with the series. The numbers and resources dictate the flow, passion and devotion will only take you so far.

Thanks for the update Wags, much appreciated and looking good!

I couldn't agree more. In the long term, this should provide both interesting what-if's and time period based realistic match-ups. By being efficient and developing products they can deliver with accuracy and efficiency, we are a step closer. I think clearly there is a need for a jet fighter, but in my mind the MiG-21 is the perfect way to introduce this to DCS World, and I'm content for now with really well done Vietnam era equipment. The limitations of the weapons at the time make this kind of simulation very interesting. It'll be fun to match up the 104 and the MiG, and I'll be looking forward, when the time's right, to a match up of newer equipment like f15 and Su27.

If you want to sell it in Germany, they cannot be used.

Yeah, it´s the first thing that comes to mind, but judging from memory this is usually reserved to official advertisement and such, while these are just WIP-pics on a forun run by a company that is not primarily bound by german laws.

In your picture that plane shows only the almost standard BF109 nose and hides the ugly sloppy messed up canopy design solution. Also the general lines of that plane don't inspire anything... awe, fear... nothing... just izoelectric line :D .

Look at the next two aircrafts... a long time I thought are made by same factory... but... no... they really loved this multiple personality disorder concept that it was rampant in italian designs. A wing stolen from a wooden closet, a fuselage thought to be smartass aerodynamic but without any thought about where and how the engine will be mounted... when the engine arrived I'm sure the designer said: "Ooooh... it is more... roundish than we thought", and then... the pilot couldn't see a thing in front so they raised a bit more the seat making it look even worse. Of course... the other factory did the exact same silly thing...

Please take my post more as a pamphlet... beauty is in the eye of the beholder... some say A10 is ugly but functional... I can't see its ugliness even if I try harder.

Well, ok. Thanks for the info then. Do you by any chance have a link to the previous discussion?

I believe it was mentioned when someone posted a skin for the P-51D which included swastikas. Some other P-51D skins with swastikas were not removed from the download section though ...

Swastikas per se are not illegal in Germany, but the distribution of them is.

We have a section within our criminal code (§86 StGB) that makes it illegal to distribute and/or use or display certain symbols (like the swastika, the SS-runes etc.) in public. Note that it says "in public". In my very own house I could put up swastika-wallpapers in every single room and then decorate it with SS-posters if I felt inclined to do so - the authorities couldn´t do a thing about it as long as I don´t start to distribute said wallpaper and posters or display them in public.

Also, please note that §86 of our criminal code also contains paragraph 3, which basically states that said symbols may in fact be used, shown and distributed in public as long as it serves educational purposes, happens in an environment of art or science, to report about historical or current affairs and various other things. The full wording of this section of our criminal code can be found here (in english): http://www.iuscomp.org/gla/statutes/StGB.htm#86

Under the German criminal code, computer games are - for whatever reason - not considered to be an art form like books or movies for example, so you may not use swastikas in a game if you plan to distribute said game to the public.

Quite a few countries in the EU have similar laws, so if ED wants to sell copies in these countries, they have to remove the swastika.

If you - as a private person outside of the jurisdiction of German law - decide to offer a repaint containing a swastika, you can do so if you wish as long as you don´t do it via official ED channels. I, as a German citizen, cannot offer a repaint with a swastika for public distribution, but can make one for my own personal use (or just download yours, which is fine as well).

Hope this sheds some light on the issue.

Which one?

I can't see anything comparable to DCS...

WWII planes are not my cup of tea also, but I bought Mustang and it's really a fun to fly it! For me, the most important thing that makes good sim is precise flight model.

I felt the same way but if they can do the both then why not with a'bit of help from 3rd party's and the community.

Exactly. As I remember original Il-2 Sturmovik sold 900.000 copies, and I think that's without expansions, but could be wrong.

WWII planes have what, 1% of systems complexity of a modern jet. So you could be flying and dogfighting in no time, and that appeals to a much wider audience.

Audience that is going to fund those niche products like study sim helicopters and modern jets.

I personally wouldn't mind if they made an arcade game, cause that would bring millions of $$$ to spend on R&D for study sim modules.

Oh look, they even have 120+ players online working ...

Get in a plane, press "i" to start the engines... Not really comparable to DCS is it.

Although it doesn't matter what I want or say, but if we can still get modern stuff made...I'm happy then. I know they (Ed) have to make money some how and getting into WWII type stuff is a good way to do it. WWII sims are huge, lots of people love them. Back in the Hyperlobby days there were always at least 500-600 people flying in some of them. While in Lock on we had around 50-100.

Which one? you talking about WWII game, I don't know cause I don't really keep up with them, but there are a few out there. I will never buy a DCS WWII aircraft or something that I will not fly. I'm not going to buy everything they or 3rd party guys make. DCS aircraft are hard to learn and get good in. I don't have a ton of time to try different ones out, so I'll pass on some things

For FC3, wich I think is part of DCS now, it is, isn´t it ? :)

Anyway, I have no idea how "realistic" it is as I neither care for IL2COD, any other WWII stuff or FC3.

Cheers

With IL-2 1946 and previous editions it was just press 'I', take off and watch your engine temps. In CLOD they stepped it up a notch - turn on fuel pumps, warm up engine, etc etc but still no where near as detailed as FSX or DCS.

I think its good to do some WWII fighters and bombers.. hell even making an simplified models for the masses can do miracles for other DCS modules since that would mean more $$$ which is ever so important.

I can't stop thinking what ED could accomplish DCS wise if they had a CoD size community.. my god that would be just awesome.. with that much money they could i think start modelling infantry on the ground and enable full fidelity combat from person-shooter to APC to tanks, AD, CAS, the whole command structure.. not to mention the maps which would be wow..

the trick is how do you join two world together or juggle between the two successfully .. (the DCS world and the "arcade" world to increase profits..)..
